I asked the same thing in both threads and got nothing back :(

I saw this on gamefaqs, haven't tried it yet:
as far as crafting goes; do you know the trick to succeeding? when the orb is white i use rapid synth, for flashing i use standard synth. if it's yellow or red i click wait and then it normally goes back to flashing. i rarely fail when i do this.

I really did not notice the orb. :lol Are we talking the orb that surrounds the crafting tool?

So apparently scale bugs come from Botany as well? ;o Sounds better than farming cactaurs ;x

Just a bit. :lol

I might try botany in a bit then see if i can get some bugs.

Although im fast running out of inventory space what with 6 crafting jobs and archer.

Edit:- BTW make sure you are wearing the correct armour ie Favour, I was wearing Canvas on my archer which isn't suited to this class and the damage I was taking was fairly high.

I can easily solo lvl 20 leves 1 star now at 14, with the correct armour

Random Q. I asked about getting new abilities and if you have to buy them from the guild or not. Someone said you didn't, that I should check my chars traits tab. I did but I didn't have anything. When does say a Marauder learn his first new ability. I'm Rank 6.
Blame the stupid user interface. Go to the "set abilities and traits" menu. In the top right corner of the window, there's a drop-down menu. Click that, then select "axe" to see your equippable skills.

Yes, I know. Needlessly convoluted, and totally stupid.

Haha.

I went home thinking "omg omg yes i have new skills", only to open it up and see nothing, I was so sad.

Hopefully tonight is different!

In the name of science, Rentahamster, DrDogg, and I spent a few lazy hours running around Thanalan killing every dodo we could find.

Our scientific experiment yielded the following data:

(1) There is no penalty to XP or SP for having a high level character stand there and tank all the damage while low level characters plink a mob to death.

(2) XP is distributed uniformly to party members based on their level regardless of whether they actually participated in the fight or not by doing damage, healing party members, or buffing/debuffing. If they were around the fight when it happened, they get XP.

(3) SP is distributed to party members based on a currently unknown algorithm which counts damage dealt per member. The highest damage dealer gets the most SP. (Everyone roll a gladiator at launch!!) The more members which deal damage to the enemy, the lower the total reward gets. Members which deal no damage to the enemy receive no SP reward. Healers can now commence raging at SE. :lol

(4) SP rewards drop significantly from highest damage dealer to lowest. Often times, the guy who dealt 60-75% of the damage got some SP, the guy who dealt 25-40% of the damage got zero.

In conclusion: The system for distributing XP and SP in this game is really fucked up and poorly thought out. If you plan to be a healer in this game, prepare to spend time leveling your mage job on your own because healing won't give you anything to level your job. SE really are trolling what few healers there are already if FFXI is any indication. If you actually play a healer, people will offer you disgusting sexual favors to join their parties because leveling a healer is going to be pure agony. :lol

One more thing to add to this - I think this is how the SP point gain works:

Every time you do damage to a mob, you have a chance to earn a skillpoint bonus.

When the skillpoint bonus procs, the SP acquired is a function of damage dealt, and the relative level of the mob. I notice that skillups off of weaponskills or nuke spells give more SP gain than just a regular attack. On the other hand, if you do more large damage attacks, you get less opportunities to proc the SP gain.

(Up to a cap of around 400-500 SP per mob MAYBE)

So what's better? More hits at less damage, or less hits at more damage?

Heheh, the first skill you got was at rank 2. Don't worry, I didn't figure it out myself until I was rank 3. It took a GameFAQS post, of all things, to realize what I was doing wrong.

Haha, I feel dumb.

So say I switch to Pugilist, I get to still use those skills acquired from Marauder? Are they gimped in anyway?

You can use most skills, as long as they meet the requirements. Some just require you to be a disciple of war or magic. Others require you to have a certain weapon equipped. Others are for the main job only.

One of the pugislit abilities I use on my Marauder is the lv6 skill "second Wind" that give you HP back for 250 TP.

The skills are gimped, yes, if they do not belong to the main job. For instance, when your main job is PUG, second wind gives you back about 150HP, where as it only give you abut 100HP back when you are a different class. The cooldown time is also about 50% longer or so.

I'm still a little lost on this. I'm playing archer, and I learned a Weapon Skill from the adventurer's guild guy and I learned Puncture, but they're nowhere to be found on the abilities and traits list.

When you go to the traits and abilities list, by default, it doesn't show your main job's skills, which is really stupid. All you see is "unequip" on the right hand side. Look a little above that, and you'll see a drop down menu. Click on that and select "archer", then you'll see a list of all your archer abilities.

Played some more now, one thing that is really annoying me is that you cannot see your party members on the map, only on the mini-map. Who thought that was a good idea? : S Oh well, grinded out some levels with a 6-man party which was a lot of fun even if my skill gain is not spectacular as the healer : P

Ah, well I suppose that makes sense then lol. I'll give it a shot tonight at some point.

The map in general sucks. It's slow as hell.

Heck, the minimap is slow too. It jerks around instead of scrolling smoothing when you're running.

Well it looks like blacksmithing is on a fast track to being the most expensive craft class. I've just noticed that pretty much everything you make requires crystals (as opposed shards). The entire bronze line of smithing (rank 1-6) requires bronze nuggets which require a fire crystal to make, even though everything that is made with bronze nuggets require shards.

Mine the nuggets? How much do they cost from the NPC?

In other news, I crafted a Sheepskin Subligar +1 today. Didn't do anything special, my quality was probably around 40 and I didn't touch up at all. Here are screen caps to show the difference in the normal and the +1. Doesn't seem to be much other than some stars and more wear.

The best strategy I've found for Blacksmith ranks 1-10 is to buy Copper Nuggets from vendors for 200 gil each and make Copper Gorge Hooks with them, which use fire shards and water shards. Making nuggets and ingots is a waste because the fire crystals are far too valuable to use up for such items. It's not as cheap to level Blacksmith as some other crafts, like Weaver and Leatherworker, which have easy to farm recipes like Hempen Yarn and Sheep Leather, but I've managed to take Blacksmith to rank 9 in open beta while making a decent profit at the same time.

The class that gets screwed the most by those recipes is not Blacksmith, but Miner, since it has effectively killed the market for ores from Grade 1 and 2 deposits.

Not sure if you can mine nuggets (just ores I believe) and they are 600 a piece from NPCs.

Yeah, I was going to do something like that just for leveling but I actually needed some of that bronze stuff for carpentry. That said, the iron line seems to be in a similar situation but maybe fire crystals will be easier to come by at that rank.

My game seriously never crashes. MAYBE once a day if it does. Now I just had the game bonk out on me 3 times in a row. Then when logging back in loveable oaf error 3102 greets me, which generally means I have to reset the desktop then it lets me back in.

Is the game smooth for everyone else right now or is it getting messy for others ?

I crash all the damn time. Consider yourself lucky.

I'm really enjoying this game so far. I just feel more relaxed while I play compared to some of the other MMO I've played. I especially like the way I feel that I could work at it and do a bit of everything rather than having to have a bunch of different characters. I am going to have to look over making Macros to change out gear. It's such a pain in the ass to have to redo all the skills each time I change jobs.

The only issues I have so far is the amount of time it takes to do things in the menus (been using a 360 Controller), the patcher, failing a Leve if you crash (only had 3 crashes all while doing a Leve), wondering how not having a AH is going to play out, and getting a grip on crafting. I'm just starting to try to craft a bit. I'm just having issues understanding the whole orbs and what to do. I honestly don't really mind while I'm running about checking out what players are selling it feels odd but different enough to make it interesting.

Does anyone know how long the beta runs, if everything gets wiped (I don't see why it wouldn't), and if there is a server GAF has decided on?

I'm really looking forward to getting into the from the start with the CE. I also definitely want get in the GAF guild when it goes up. I have never really been in one before and it just seems like it could be a lot of fun.

I'm currently on Lindblum and using the name Zarana Zander, that name may change when I get the retail.

LOL you lil shit, thats mine !!, I bet everyone has been asking you were you got it. :lol

Can't wait to make them with different colours.

I'm not the least bit interested in that hat. Sorry, but it just doesn't fit in my wardrobe. I'm glad you like it though. :lol

I've been trying to figure out if anima replenishes when you're offline. It really seems like my anima is only regenerating when I've been online awhile. Further experiments are ongoing.

I think mine regens when offline. It did in closed beta at least when I used up 16 of it, logged off for 4 days, and came back to 100.

Was at 2 Anima last night. Now at 4. Replenishes really slow. I'm sure it'll balance itself out once we get some birds and airships. ><

We got any (at least level 8) Thaumaturges in the LS? I know Dogg is one.

I'm gonna do some testing later on in around 10 or more hours from now and would need a THA. I'm gonna try more of the "I tank while you do all the attacking" testing. You'll probably get mad skillups, too.

I want to try it on a stronger mob to see if we can break the 500 SP per monster barrier.

I'm a thaum, can log in later if you still want

The rar tanks as the download progresses. It's frustrating. Started at over 1mb/s, now at 200kb/s, with more time remaining than when it began. I was downloading it yesterday and had to pause. Tried to continue today but the download couldn't resume because I hadn't visited the site and entered the password beforehand, so I had to restart.

I just want to try this damn thing out!

The more I think about it, the more becoming a pure crafter would be a fun idea. There's plenty of localleves for each one and you can use the rewards from each to continue skilling up during the leve cooldown or for equipment synths. Not to mention you gain physical level as well so whenever you do use leves to level your job, you'll be good to go. If you group with the LS, you'll have tons of battleleves to do every couple of days for your fighting fix. :D

That's how I plan to approach the game. I'm glad local leves and regional ones don't overlap for the 8/8 you can do before the cool down wait. I'm not going to super push and grind hard if there's no leves to be doing with people, so that way I can always have money/gear.

Side note: YO! How do you get that awesome jester hat?! :D

Man, no-one in the OPs list is in Limsa Lominsa - is it really that bad? I chose it because I liked the little bit of artwork. How easy is it to get between cities? Also - can someone get me in the GAF LS - I'm Moo Babe in game.

No one is picking Limsa because everyone was forced into Limsa for closed beta. We all wanted out ASAP :lol

Its easy to travel between cities too. Theyre a bit of a hike but nothing crazy.

Yesterday was... okay. I got more R0's yesterday than I have during the entire beta. I couldn't do any battleleves, but at least I didn't R0 long enough to ruin any crafting.

I am not a fan of doing leves exclusively to level up, and I think it's one of the reasons people aren't partying properly. I have yet to see anyone with their flag up or even using the party search functions to form something other than leve parties.

That said, I also think the mob placement and lack of high level gear (or being able to find gear in the market wards) is also severely limiting the ability to party outside of leves.

As I said previously, I'm essentially going to focus on all crafts, while soloing CON and THA until SE makes partying fun again (for mage classes).

Physical - 18
THA - 10
CON - 8
GLD - 4
Weaver - 8
Alchemist - 8
Goldsmith - 6
Cooking - 6
Tanner - 5
Armorer - 3
Blacksmith - 2

I think that's everything... playing about 4-6 hours a day since work has me really busy. Once retail hits I should be on all day everyday... rank 50 here I come. :lol
