Sorry to invade your beta thread, but since some of you are playing maybe you can answer a couple questions or point me to a good post/preview that addresses these things:
I really enjoyed FFXI when it came out. However, I grew tired of it because it was a lot of "kill crabs, then kill onions, then kill goblins, then kill ghosts, then move to a new area and kill crabs, then kill onions, then kill goblins, then kill ghosts."
Now, I actually really enjoyed the party system--but I hated the monotony of enemies and the fact that leveling was merely "kill about a bajillion crabs and onions, then level up, then kill 2 bajillion."
I think I spent a good 200 hours in the dunes--the leveling got so damn slow for me after 30, that I would just start over a new job and get to beyond the dunes, then start over again.
Is this stuff fixed now? Is there some variety or at least a faster pace to leveling?
Also, is there a more modern equipment system? Maybe a dungeon running system similar to WoW's that has places to go for people of all levels--not just end game. With XI, I felt that basically you could get equipment only in the Auction House; equipment was next to impossible to find if you aren't already rocking a high level (or you'd be so behind the curve that finding a party would be very difficult).
Finally, is there a quest system that isn't completely obtuse? I remember wanting to unlock Paladin and having to do some strange quest chain that I didn't understand. I just followed a guide that I read on the internet and did a bunch of things in the game while I literally had no idea what was going on. To top it off, I needed high level help and couldn't unlock the job on my own. Total bummer.
Otherwise, I loved renkei, so I hope that is still around. And chain bonuses were badass. I loved resting in battle as a healer: Pop a regen, sit down, wait for a tick, throw out a cure, sit down. Man, that shit was soooooo fun. I really hope the rest of the game has caught up with the awesome party mechanic.
