ps, it's not "100% WoW controls" - it's "basic functionality that's been supported in most applications since before Windows 3.1".

Alt+tab is now a WoW control. Better tell all those PC game/application makers that managed to put it in their games/programs before 2004.

Feels like the patch made the game run worse on my computer. Fans are spinning so fast my computer could start flying.

Even at the lowest settings this game looks gorgeous.

I'm talking about keyboard and mouse controls and how people want crafting in WoW to be in FFXIV. So... anything? Current testers? How do you reply to a thread? There is no reply button in any browser I try, in any of the threads I visit. I can't even access certain areas like the Reporting Bugs section... says I don't have access with the current SE account.

As for the problem you are having, have you made sure that all your drivers are up to date, graphics and sound plus direct X.
FWIW I can't get this game to run on windows XP but will work fine on Windows 7 , same PC.

It seems like I ran into a similar issue when I first got access to the beta and Im not sure if I did anything to fix it or if it just fixed itself. I almost want to say you have to go through another process of registering for the forums.

Every 3D MMO since inception uses mouse controls. Blizzard didn't invent crafting, mouses, alt-tabbing, etc.
Dropping accessibility rants against Blizzard and calling their product easy mode because your game of choice is more cryptic and unwieldy in the initial period of the leveling game isn't coming across as well, sane.
It's one thing to stick up for your title, it's another to be completely insane for it. There's optimism and being unabashedly apologetic for every single awkward design decision. I loved FFXI back in the day, and I want to see it furthered and take a bite out of the market and really succeed. I've been waiting for this since like 2003. I was in the initial beta for FFXI on PS2 as well.
But things like this... it's not some grandiose plan, it's a flub from an out of touch developer.
I think a lot of people really wanted the content and combat and world structure and art and music of XI, but with a lot of modern adaptation, updates and twists. I sincerely doubt "not being WoW" really has much to do with any disdain. I mean WoW is good shit, Blizzard gets massive props for their game and for the insane updates and overhauls they constantly pepper it with, it's set a standard that will only do good for the genre.
However, a lot of us are just sick of that core experience, especially long time MMO fans. I want more variety and competition.
It's getting a bit tiring watching competetiors bomb right out of the gate for no reason other than being stupid and not following the logical paths and modernizations to the genre and communities. Even the F2P RTS's like League of Legends are doing it better lately.
So that in mind, FFXI 1.1 with all of the issues of the original 2002(?) release after 7-8 years isn't pleasing at the moment for a lot of people. Even if it was just that, it's sad to see so many simple design choices being dropped on their heads.

I do get the Welcome message in the corner, but it just displays a random name. I change it by going to My Stuff -> Edit Profile but within visiting a couple different threads it changes back to a random name. No matter how many times I change it, it keeps resetting to a random name.
Is there some alternate way to download the client? The FFXIV Beta Version program keeps crashing. It won't even start downloading the client, I just get a "Final Fantaxy XIV Beta Version has stopped working" error and have to close it.

Honestly, I think we all want this game to succeed. Blindly defending every shitty point of the game with downright insane justifications like the alt-tab thing and how usable UIs make the game easy mode and cater to casuals isn't going to make the game actually better.
There's always a vocal minority that's scared of change. This isn't anything new. It's been around since the days of Everquest.

They confuse tedium with challenge, and dismiss other games' mechanics without actually having tried them for themselves.

The only issues it has in common with XI is no option for complete keyboard config/ decent mouse controls and no alt-tabbing from full screen. FFXI 1.1 is a little much in that regard. The UI is just fine aside from bazaar menu speed at times / skill menu response, and the necessary addition of main map party markers.

Better than the 400 bytes/s it was going at before I did the port forwarding, but still. I wish I could at least disable the music the stupid thing plays.
