FINAL FANTASY XV - Niflheim Base Battle Footage

Let's not forget that Tabata is bringing back Toad status - replete with a photorealistic frog that has been hand-animated by an artist after watching countless hours upon hours of reference videos of real frogs - just to create a status effect for a game.

Yes, this is Final Fantasy, but it's Final Fantasy on a new, obnoxiously impressive level.

And it's absolutely amazing!

Did they actually do that? Totally sounds like something they would do.

Nothing compliments a brotrip and a feat of German engineering like Coleman camping products.

Final Fantasy is a stable platform on which the creators' dreams can be served up and then consumed by the beauty-hungry masses. To illustrate this point, today I have brought some petro-distillate flatware....

Yes the absolute essential thing to the game.. Frogs. So glad to see it was 100% done. We need a frog to turn into a summon and just wreck shit.

I want a photorealistic frog drop - 2-ton amphibian plopping right down. Would be the perfect follow-up to dragoon lady's attack. You're not the only one who can rain death from above, Cleavage Window!

Wonder if we can flee battle and roam around the world as a toad.

How did we not see this coming 2 years ago.

Is there any updated breakdown of the current battle system? Hype was successfully taken out back and executed after the "hold the button to combo" and the "hold the button to dodge" debacle.
There's no sense in being overly worried that this'll just be "hold circle down -> watch Noctis destroy everything". Directional inputs matter. Timed button presses matter. Every weapon has a special attack tied to another button, so you'll want to take advantage of that. There's magic & group attacks. Giving orders to teammates. Changing weapons mid-combo can open up all kinds of possibilities. You have to dodge & block attacks. You have to position yourself on the battlefield to avoid enemy attacks & take advantage of their weak points. Aerial combat is a thing. Enemies can attack you in ways that require attention (i.e. that crocodile thing biting Noctis' leg and not letting go).

There should be plenty of stuff in the system that will keep you engaged during combat beyond pressing down a single button and watching things explode around you. Not to even mention we do have the possibility to still tap the attack button. Sure, it didn't quite feel as good in Episode Duscae as it should have, but let's see if that's still the case with the finished game. Could be they've upped the responsiveness of that way of playing and people who don't want to hold down circle can do it the other way and still feel like they have proper control over Noctis' attacks. I mean, I never held down the attack button in Type-0 (except with a single character) and that didn't fell the least bit off like Episode Duscae did, so hopefully they can achieve the same in FFXV. Even if they can't, it's probably not the end of the world for reasons I described above, but yeah, of course it would be better if both ways would be equally viable/enjoyable ways of playing.

Or a photorealistic frog that morphs into a Tonberry that then morphs into Shinji Hashimoto who then tells the enemy to "please be excited" - to which the enemy grabs it's head, tilts it's head back with wide-eyes and screams NOOOOOooooo! Then, it rips it's head in half; exploding into millions of particles - done photo-realistically thanks to the power of the Luminous Studio Engine.

Love the detail on this little guy. I do have to note that I'm 95% certain that's a frog, not a toad.
It's some weird frog-toad chimaera.

It has a thin body with long legs and protruding eyes like a frog, but its toes don't appear to be webbed like a toad's.

Maybe I'm up too late, but I think I'd be on board for a Hashimoto secret summon locked behind something wacky like finish the game in under 2 hours at level 1.

Good catch. I guess at the margins, some members of bufonidae can look pretty frog like, so I'll give them the pass.

I think it's really cool that Toad status is included in the game. I wonder what Toad Noctis could do. Imagine a toad warping around like a motherfucker, but doing 1 damage with every hit. Hilarious haha.

Ha, some of you apparently know so much about the game already.

So glad to be in the dark about the character and plot points.

Same. That gameplay looked pretty damn good. I'm still a little turned off by the boring character designs and the car driving aspect seems kind of corny to me. Everything else looks great though. I look forward to going in mostly in the dark.

You know what would be a pretty cool easter egg? With the X-strike and all, maybe Noctis's toad status occasionally has a chance to transform him into

latest

Frog from Chrono Trigger, with completely new, unique moveset exclusive to Frog Noctis. That would be mind blowing.

I love, love, LOVE the fact that we have to put gas in Noctis' car, or they'll have to push it lol! It's been forever since we've had a game where you actually had to put gas in your vehicle - actually, has there ever been a game where you had to put fuel in your vehicle?!?

Yes fuel consumption has come up in a few games here and there.

I like it but I hope it doesn't become more of a chore/annoyance than a cool little gimmick. If they pull it off right then it will be a really cool thing. Just needs to be balanced right.

FF8?

Yes, like making sure that the Regalia gets extremely good gas mileage - i.e. meaning that we don't have to fill it up too often lol!

It'll be even hot if Cidney and Luna helped push the car with Noctis.... Heh.... heh...

Xenoblade just did this. Not really a super exciting feature.

Watching this again and I love how some of the old speed has come back. The Duscae combat seemed really slow in comparison to lots of the older footage. It also seems like they finally got the framerate up as well.

A few games. Recently Mad Max.

I like the gas thing. I think it's going to be implemented in a way that's simple and will be memorable if/when anything does happen. I see it as a neat little gimmick.

FFVIII had fuel, too.

And heck, forget XCX, Xenogears had fuel (the Gears in that game were a pain to control).

It's a status effect, like the Toad status effect from the old games. They already completed the locomotion controls for it and showed it off in the progress report(also note it's listed under "combat").

I want a prince charming situation.

I know those fucking frogs... I thought it was funny the first couple of times but goddamn did they piss me the fuck off! The battles are quite hilarious

Because I've not played two of those games [and it's been ages since I played Final Fantasy VIII and I did not complete much of it], would you mind sharing how this feature was implemented in those and other games - as in how did you as a player go about fueling your vehicle??

In Mad Max you had to find gas cans scattered about the wasteland or stop at a stronghold that you got the Oil Well upgrade for.
