Thanks for the input, Cooter! As I said, I kind of mixed what you guys said with things I read and a little bit from the gym's instructor. I've been working out for a month, but I'll try to lower the number of repetitions while increasing the weight!

I was trying to follow what I was doing previously, but I'll change that. I'll try 3x5! Thanks, Sean!
You're welcome. Hopefully we can save you the years many of us here wasted doing less than optimal lifting.

I want my twenties back. Fuck you fitness magazines. :(
I want to go back in time with my current knowledge and play high school football. So much wasted potential. Of course part of that too was a yet developed dedication.

Would have helped in baseball also but especially so in football.

Ugh my college lifting routine. So many reps. So weak. Terrible.

What Cooter said....less is more

Even light weight deadlifts with that volume will burn you out real quick

I'm also assuming he's new to the deadlift movement. In which case high volume can mess with your form causing you to place torque on your lower back deep into the sets.

I do 5x10 deadlifts and at around the 4th set, making sure to fully reset and straighten out is very important. Becomes real easy to get sloppy with it.

You know, I never thought about it but I think you really helped me out here.
I'm also doing 5x10 deadlifts on squat days (5/3/1 BBB template) and Ive had some lower back issues recently.

This really might be the issue, apart from generally having a terrible posture.

Gonna have to pay extra attention now.. or maybe go to 3x10? 5x8?

Decreasing the volume could help or maybe increase the rest time in between the sets. When I notice I'm getting sloppy or winded sometimes I'll add an extra minute or 30 seconds to my recovery time to gather myself.

When I get to my working sets of 3 I take 5 minutes and it honestly would probably do me some good if I took longer. It absolutely takes everything I've got to complete those sets.

My wife and I are starting back up in the gym and with our diet routines. I'm going to follow the Kris Gethin 12-week program. I'm modifying though (bad idea I know), I'm going to do straight cardio for the first four weeks just get cut and trim as much fat as I can. Additionally, I'm going to stay consistent with my diet and eating 6-7 meals a day.

Should be fun. I'm going to write in my notebook all my progress and keep track of everything, basically journal it.

How in hell do you improve in pullups? I can do 15-20 without using any momentum but I feel like it's been like this for ages. I'm not improving at all.

damn, after two weeks of absence because of a flu, I go today and resolutioners are in full force in my gym,

half of the crowd was completely unknown to me, and not everyone untrained.

Some guys I had never seen before knowing very well their shit and looking the part.

how are resolutioners treating you, fitgaf?

Shouldn't you generally be adding weight when you're in that sort of range?

Unrelated, I've done my foam rolling. I really hope my legs wont be screwed for another week. =/

I assume you want to improve the number you can do? Easiest way is to drop 5 or 10 pounds. Ha

If you can crank out 15-20 you are probably ready to add weighted pull ups to your arsenal. Stick a 25 around your waste and see if you can get 10 or so. I've found weighted pull ups have made body weight ones much easier though I rarely even test the total number of regular ones I can get at once. Once you pull yourself plus 100lbs above that bar a few times it's not surprising that performing them with nothing feels quite easy.

You should also be concentrating on explosive high pull ups to your upper chest. Take it a step further and start working on muscle ups for extra credit!

Different dude, same housing unit.

fitgaf, I need your opinion.

So in this dating app every now and then I come across fitness guys (real Pro bodybuilders are way too busy and in-demand to mingle with the commoners) and this was the third time a guy looking really advanced in BB said to me

"changing programs every 6 weeks has done wonders to me".......

that goes against what I believe Fitgaf suggests.

is it that these guys are at a level where doing that makes sense?? Is it a purely bodybuilding thing? cause I don't think changing a strength program every 6 weeks would be a good idea.

we are talking guys darth-level and way beyond, not your amateur standard gym rat

do they mean the exercises themselves, perhaps? like leaving the program as is but exchanging one exercise for another one in similar purpose and value (pec fly machine to lying DB fly, for example)?

No and he's probably a catfish.

Hey guys, I could use some advice.

I just learned about the whole controversy with Body Fortress 'spiking' their protein content, and since they changed labels to reduce the printed protein content I have to believe it.

I need an alternative low-cost protein powder. I'm on a pretty tight budget. I am currently on a cutting phase. Can anyone make a recommendation?

Thank you.

First time going to the gym during work hours, feels weird that I don't have to stress about getting to the gym tonight. Cage and rack both open at 1pm, felt great.

MyProtein.

Can't speak for how cheap they are around the world, but they're easily one of the cheapest in the UK.

An Amazon search tells me that MyProtein costs $90 per kilogram.

I'm accustomed to paying (and can't afford much more than) $10 per pound.

I appreciate the advice, but I thought it might be useful for me to give an idea of what my budget is :)

Was just watching this weeks Brooklyn Nine Nine.

Jake and Terry were in the gym.

In the background there was an ez curl bar racked in a squat rack.

I nearly had an aneurysm.

Haha I need to eat less. :(

Bah, didn't work out all weekend because I was depressed. Just couldn't find the motivation to get up and do anything. I mostly just slept, ate, watched TV and slept some more. Went to an NHL game though, which was fun at least.

Didn't work out this morning either but I'm forcing myself to hot yoga tonight.
I think we have had this conversation earlier. If you eat too little, your body don't want to burn the fat but keep it even more tight.

Also if you are feeling depressed, working out can actually help with that. Rest days are fine as well though.

I am going to gym tomorrow and today I scheduled to go Nordic walking. I should check the weather forecast before deciding to do something like that. It was the worst snow storm of the year. My planned two hours walk changed to one hour walk. Even my eyelashes were frozen when I headed in. My footprints were gone in a matter of minutes.

at least you guys lifted in college, I wasted so much time on the internet and porn.

Completely. Fucking. Miserable. I work in cold weather where my nose hairs make crackling noises when I scrunch my nose up. Your face is one I make often. I hate it. Good for you for going. This is dedication guys! This is how you get results.

Why is eating so difficult FitGAF? I'm only 140 at 5'6 (trying to bulk because I'm skinnyfat) but it feels so difficult to ingest 140g of protein without heavily relying on milk and whey protein. Problem with milk is all the fat that comes with it.

I'm thinking I may just entirely cut cereal out of my breakfast entirely and instead maybe focus on scrambled eggs or something similar (I can't eat sausage or bacon).

Drink skim milk (all I ever drink) and what's wrong with whey?

I have one large meal of chicken, pasta sauce, mozz cheese and jalapenos. It comes in at ~110-120g of protein. I demolish it quickly and swiftly. You can do it.

Some people just have a larger appetite than others man. I'm one of them so my issues come when I have to limit my calories. We all have our weaknesses.

Stop worrying about the fat. I appreciate it's what, 50 years of being told not to eat it (and I was just as guilty of it)... but we know now that dietary fat doesn't make you fat, aside from obviously taking into account the calories you're getting from it.

There are posters here that eat basically nothing but fat and protein yet still end up ripped.

Also, chicken breast, and fish, if you like it. Eggs are good, but not the best source of protein at about 13g of protein per 100g, vs ~18g per 100g for cod and ~23g per 100g for chicken.

Fair play, you've got some strange eating habits!

By my reckoning, to have that sort of protein content you're looking at about 300g of cooked chicken and 100g of mozzarella. I don't think I could eat half of it! Does sound tasty though.

Nothing wrong with it but I can only handle so much "double chocolate" protein powder mixed with milk in a day.

Fair enough. So basically cutting sugars and carbs as much as possible is what I should be aiming for? While of course maintaining a caloric surplus and at least 1lb to 1g protein.

I honestly never actually thought about picking up fish. Probably would be easier than picking up chicken since I need to get it from the halal market.

I just finished the first week of SL5x5 and I can feel my appetite slowly growing as I consistently keep hitting the gym so it should (hopefully) only get easier as time goes on.

Anyone here go to a roid gym. By that I mean a gym where a decent amount of the people that train there are on steroids etc. anyone have any sage advice or does it not really matter?

On a cut it needs to be higher though. Especially if you're dropping carbs.

Ah I see. It's to minimize the chances of muscle loss? Is it a "guarantee", for a lack of a better word? You're more knowledgeable than me haha, I'm just curious. I've only looked into macros relating to bulking and maintenance.

If you're doing more than two servings (two scoops a day) you're doing it wrong IMO.

It's easier to cut when you balance out your macros to more efficiently reach your calories. Upping protein and fat while reducing carbs is the best way to do this IMO. But yeah, the general thought though is that if you're gonna be a at a caloric defacite you want to be high on protein to fight off muscle loss.

What's the question? Short of the temptation to use, there's really no reason why you shouldn't go to a gym where lots of people are on steroids.

I mean, you'll probably get a whole ton of shit advice that only really applies to people who are on gear, but you'll get a a ton of shit advice at every gym... and here too. :D
