Many more hours in, and this game is now good. 8/10.
The first 10 hours or so is really bad!
The first 10 hours or so is really bad!
I just put 80 hours into Nioh 2 which was amazing. Your post has convinced me I don't need this game. I bought SpongeBob insteadHonestly, so far I am pretty disappointed. It just feels like Sucker Punch has sacrificed their focus on fun gameplay to chase the "immersion" and graphics as their focus. I'm still very early in the game, so I could change my mind for sure.
I don't like the wind navigation at all. The world is really not designed in a way that you can navigate organically. Most of it so far is flat, with trees blocking some view, and a lack of distinct landmarks. This means that to find anything at all, you basically have to mark it on your map, and then spam the wind button over and over to figure out which way to go while a distance meter on the top left tells you the number of meters you are from the objective. It's not immersive to me, and honestly takes me even further out of the game than a compass or quest marker, because I'm constantly having to spam the wind button over and over to make sure I'm not just riding into the wrong direction with no clue.
Items are so blended into the environment that you can barely even see them highlighted enough to collect them. I literally searched a whole room and barely saw one of the main collectibles. Supply bags and bamboo eventually become recognizable, but it's still not ideal.
The camera is extremely tight and up close to the main character. Following footprints is even less fun than in The Witcher because they're not even visible most of the time. You're not able to see your surrounds and the skyline easily, or enemies surrounding you become obscured with the camera pulled in so close. The only reason to do that is to focus on graphics and "immersion," but it just makes it so I can't hardly see what's going on.
Combat is not great either. Hammer enemies spam unblockable attacks 3-5x in a row. Animations look fragmented and juttery. Controls are not responsive 100% of the time when doing hold moves. There are very little graphical indications that you're low on health, forcing you to always look at the extremely small bar on the bottom left (immersion!). The guard break system for enemies is not very fun, amounting to basically just spamming the heavy attack button on each enemy. Shooting the bow does not feel good, especially after Days Gone with it's subtle gyro. Enemies at a distance are so visually indistinct that you often have to squint to even see them in the archery quest. The controls for archery are extremely unresponsive as well. If you're holding L2 to aim and get shot, you don't return to your aim stance. You have to let go of L2 and start over. Your ammo number is also not that visible (immersion) and you may run out of ammo and not even know it immediately because it's the same as when the controls don't respond. I don't find the archers that fun to fight either if you focus on melee.
The whole game feels janky in terms of character movement. The horse is not smooth when accelerating and turning. Mounted combat sucks as well.
Stealth is not great, with zero ability to mark enemies making this feel very primitive compared to newer stealth focused games. The focused hearing is more x-ray vision, which is the lowest form of correction for bad game design. Enemy placement and level design is not great for stealth, so fix it with x-ray vision instead of crafting it intelligently. And you have to spam it on and off a lot, which is tedious and annoying, and the color washed out look is not great when using it. You can't even move bodies, which sucks. Even Tenchu Z feels like it has 100x the stealth options this game does. Obviously more is coming, so we'll see.
I'm so into samurai and ninja stuff that I'll still enjoy the game, and probably try to platinum it. But I'm honestly not even having that much fun so far. The story is not that great either. Having the game throw stupid guilt trip memories at you after you decide to pursue the ghost path is dumb. They missed the chance to have him train as a ninja as well, and he instead just kind of picks it up immediately and it feels extremely rushed. The story in inFamous SS felt better so far. Cutscenes are also often stiff and lifeless, unless they're main story ones which are all pretty awesome.
Right now I'm leaning towards a 7 out of 10, which emphasis on good graphics. Navigating in this world is a chore, and feels worse than almost all other open world games. I don't enjoy spamming the wind button and just awkwardly riding into the void, completely blind, in a game that doesn't have strong enough level design to promote organic exploration.
Nioh 2 is 20x as good as this game, has tons of weapons with way more depth than this, way more enemies, way more bosses, better level design, online co-op, better cutscenes, better everything. I agree with Edge's review. This game is not going to be remembered as top tier after the dust settles. I'm honestly shocked that their visual and art design decisions are so bad for supporting clear gameplay. Everything destructible or interactive in that game looked clearly designated with yellow highlights and still looked stunning artistically, while promoting extremely clear gameplay options. This is an excessively "realistic" looking game that's tough to actually play correctly and would be better off as a movie.
A 9.2 is what the official MC score should have been in the first place. This game is excellent. This is so far my personal game of the year.
Days Gone getting 71 critic score has to do SJW reviewers? The same thing is happening with Days Gone and GOT. They both deserved way more praise and better reviews but the SJW reviewers don't have enough ammo to stick it to the "alt-right" so they're not inflating the scores like they did with TLOU2.
I loved a big part of TLOU2 but there were so many flaws with the second half and they didn't even talk about it because Abby and Lev were all they ever always dreamt of in a AAA game.
Days Gone was a buggy mess when it launched and the game was way too bloated. That's why it got the scores it did, not because of "SJW reviewers". Ghost of Tsushima's critic score is about right. It has a lot of the usual open world busy work that a lot of us are tired of. There are way too many fox dens for example and you're doing the same thing for them over and over. The facial animations are also not great and the enemy AI is really dumb at times. I'm also seeing a lot of mention of quests bugging out which means this game is nowhere near as polished as TLOU2. It's so funny that you are calling them out for ignoring flaws in TLOU2 when Ghost has way more flaws in it.The same thing is happening with Days Gone and GOT. I mean, I get it- in the time of open world gaming, they’re all basically the same. Spider Man, Horizon, Ghost, Assassin’s, Days Gone, Yakuza...etc. So it all comes down to personal preference via the little things in-game.
Don’t you dare compare Yakuza to these lesser games!
Yeah don't do anything that will offend me or I'll bomb your game with 0/10s and also flood another game with 10/10s to try to prove some stupid point. The stupidity of some people.9.2 meta user score, so far higher than:
GOW - 9.1
RDR - 8.4
HZD - 8.4
U4 - 8.5
Doom Eternal - 8.3
Zelda BOTW - 8.6
Witcher 3 - 8.5
One thing is clear, it's better not to fight your costumers. be respectful and we will back you up. it's not much to ask.

Yeah because Gamespot represents all other reviewers out there right? That game had serious problems when it came out. Don't act like just b/c one person at one outlet said something stupid that ALL reviews were SJW's hating on it.Damn you guys were not there when the game came out and Deacon was called a generic white male and all the articles about the sexist wedding quote? Days Gone was a laughingstock for a while because of that in all the usual sjw places.
The gamespot reviewer was one of the biggest offenders, only giving it a 5 and creating controversies on twitter against the game and Deacon.
I just can't with people like this right here. "Most gamers" LMAO. Yeah a few thousand people is most gamers all right. Not to mention half of these likely haven't even played the game and are just giving it a 10/10 b/c they hated TLOU2 and they think they are proving some kind of point. Also sequels aren't made based on what an irrelevant user score on Metacritic says. They are made based on how well the game sells.Wow that user-score is phenomenal, this game is getting a sequel then... and I am so happy.
It's clear that most gamers are very happy with their purchase and they feel they are getting both quality and enjoyment out of it.
I'm only started act 2 but I went back to clear out a few towns and villages... end of act 1 was great. Had a few retries there! (on hard)

The only thing about Days Gone that was true is that the 7 average it has is about right. Like I said the game was full of bugs and technical issues even weeks after launch. It was also way too bloated. Even people who really liked the game will tell you that it would've been better if they cut about 20 hours out of it. A game like that doesn't deserve an 8 or higher. The game didn't deserve 4/10s but the overall concensus that it was around a 7 is spot on. That's fine too as it was from a developer who hadn't even put out a game on console since the PS2. Bend isn't exactly at a Naughty Dog or Insomniac quality you know.Yes they were. I named Gamespot beause they are the most high-profile but Vice was even worse for calling Deacon a slave-trader because of a sidequest. The guns were out for this game and those reviews were used as ammo all over Twitter and on ERA for trashing and laughing about the game.
20 Hours In, 'Days Gone' Is an Ugly, Miserable Experience
A game about a man with a code, a code that involves selling people to a slave trader and pretending you're morally conflicted about it.www.vice.com
Just look at how many LTTP Days Gone "Wait I thought this game was trash?" we get here and in other forums now that the dust has settled.
You know it's true so you can stop. I'm not sure what narrative you're trying to push.
Honestly, I feel they broke through with inFamous SS, and this game is really pretty similar in structure in almost every way.Sucker Punch has, in my mind, a reputation for making good, but not great, games. With Ghost it's like they have broken through to the next level, it is a truly great game.
Lol Nice! I just unlocked the bomb and I'm about to get a 3rd kunai too. This game deserves a new game + I hope Sucker Punch does it

I was just thinking the same thing. I can see them getting a 90-94 with the sequel. They have a very strong foundation here and now they have more power to work with and they don't have to start from scratch for the next game. Sucker Punch is up there with the big boysYep. I love mostly everything about the game. It is definitely among the best games I have ever played. It raises Sucker Punch up to a status up there with InSomniac and Naughty Dog. Obviously, they don’t have the track record at this level the other two do... but damn!
OK then...I just can't with people like this right here. "Most gamers" LMAO. Yeah a few thousand people is most gamers all right. I liked Second Son but Ghost of Tsushima feels like it's magnitudes better than that game and rightfully so as Second Son was originally supposed to be a PS4 launch title. It still released in the launch window but it felt a little liteHonestly, I feel they broke through with inFamous SS, and this game is really pretty similar in structure in almost every way.
inFamous was a visual showcase for the PS4 for years. Very similar quest design and gameplay loop. Very similar platforming and traversal. The melee combat even seems slightly based on inFamous with the light lock on similar to the chain move, just greatly expanded with more moves and stances.

I've pretty much avoided any stealth so far, it feels too similar to assassin's creed and the game is maybe a little too easy, I just go in and challengeThe stealth element in this game is pretty bad. Like... there's no excuse bad.
I'll explain why.
Enemy Placement:
Enemy placement is very bad, most open scenarios do not support going in quiet even when the mission requires you to stay quiet. I've found that most enemies in camps are positioned in a way where it is almost impossible to assassinate them without alerting others because they're either in the clear view of another enemy, their back is against a wall, or they have this weird ass back and forth patrol that doesn't leave them open to attacks.
Stealth Mechanicals and Elements:
Typical stealth elements and mechanics are bizarrely missing. Like being able to hug a wall, quickly change cover/position, assassinating from rooftops (you can but it's done poorly), assassinating from cover, being able to hide a body, perching yourself, setting traps, assassinating from ledges (due to enemy placement this wouldn't be possible either way). Why is there only one type of "Tall Grass" to hide in? You cannot hide in bushes or other foilage because bushes are a brick wall, you can't hide behind trees effectively or in trees for that matter, you can't even distract enemies, they see it and they look in your general direction, there's not even darts or anything you can use to assassinate with.
Nothing to keep you in stealth:
It's a good thing no mission (so far) fully requires stealth because that would be nearly impossible. Since the mechanics mentioned above are missing it is immensely hard to stay stealthy.
This game was not designed with stealth in mind despite the whole story being basically about the birth of the way of a Ninja. They fleshed out being a Samurai but weirdly not being a Ninja. Being a Ninja could have easily been a stance. When crouched you have different attacks and movement options that aren't effective in open combat but are in stealth. I don't know how Sucker Punch fucked this up so bad when we have a Decades worth of Batman games that are the blueprints of how to do stealth.
And honestly this game should have went with how Breathe of the Wild was when it comes to traversing the world. Too many things act as walls, not being able to scale cliff sides unless the game tells you you can.
Overall I'm having a blast but yeah Stealth is unforgivably bad in this game. There are no excses.
Yeah, I'm wondering how it ends too and if the sequel will have a different protagonist. I agree nothing has came off cheesy either and I haven't seen any try hard moments. I'm still in Act 1 and i can see this being one of my favorite PS4 games, it kinda is already which act are you on?Without having finished the game, I’m curious whether they would have to spin off to another character or if there is a way to continue this character in a meaningful way. For this, origins story, the background for the main character is pretty strong. The story was put together well. Nothing felt cheesy about the flashbacks or story. I haven’t had an eye roll moment yet. Impressive to use so many elements in game and story and still feeling fresh.
The only thing about Days Gone that was true is that the 7 average it has is about right. Like I said the game was full of bugs and technical issues even weeks after launch. The firecrackers are fun just throw them near a barrel and watch all the guards come over to investigate and than light them upAbout 80% or so of those things you’d like to have actually are in the game. You can distract guards, trap them (more or less), use rolling to fast switch cover, use ceilings to your advantage, use trees and bushes to block enemy sight, kill from tall grass unnoticed, etc. I’ve cleared multiple entire camps 100% unnoticed with no issues. Some of those abilities are unlocked as you progress, which makes sense story wise.
The game is no Batman but the stealth is serviceable. I miss corpse hiding but other than that most of the essentials are present, and it becomes better as you unlock more options.
But it's OK for media to give extra points for things that don't relate to the game experience. just because the director is part of their club. English is not my native language but they call this "bias" correct?I just can't with people like this right here. "Most gamers" LMAO. Yeah a few thousand people is most gamers all right. Ewww don't even compare. Ac games have become the epitome of borefests. This game is much more fun and beautiful than your typical AC gameI think this game is a good stop gap while waiting for the real deal AC Vahala.
Well if TLOU2 is anything to go by yeah most of them probably haven't. That game had 30,000 negative reviews mere hours after it released. Don't even try to act like all those people played the game. I also went through a ton of people's profiles that gave Ghost a 10/10 on Meta and funny enough the only other game they've ever given a user score to was TLOU 2 and it was a 0/10, 1/10 etc. These people aren't playing these games. They have an agenda and are using Metacritic to voice it.apply this on yourself first..
I've pretty much avoided any stealth so far, it feels too similar to assassin's creed and the game is maybe a little too easy, I just go in and challenge
I think it's more due to the fact I've played so much assassin's creed odyssey that I don't have any patience for stealth right now, other than like you said using firecrackers to lure groups of enemies near a barrel and lighting them up, plus the combat system and parrying in the game is incredibly fun so I'd rather just clear out large groups of enemies with the swordI haven't had much problem with stealth in this.
Mostly using firecrackers/wind chimes to separate enemies/group them. Slow motion with the bow also helps. I find luring a couple to tall grass is a good way to pick off one from a group by using a chime, get the upgrade that allows 2/3 stealth assassination chains and you're golden.
Ghost of Tsushima and TLOU 2 have made this one of the best gaming years for me. I feel so blessed to be able to experience both one after anotherWhy are LOU2 fans so insecure? I thought it was objectively the "bestest game ever" so why are you all so worried about ghosts of tsushima stealing its thunder
Right here and TLOU2 by far has been subjected to bombing more than GOT. Nobody has more energy than tha anti-woke people. A year later and they are still mad at Brie Larson.Ghost of Tsushima and TLOU 2 have made this one of the best gaming years for me. I feel so blessed to be able to experience both one after another
