HBO Original | The Last of Us | Part 1 OT | Endure & Survive

So it looks like a mutually beneficial partnership of brains/connections with muscle rather than someone's clearly being in charge there to me.
Mutually beneficial companionship but Tess is in charge and that's ok. Maria is also in charge of their community, Marlene is in charge of the firefly. The leader of the Seraphite in part 2 is a woman. A major theme of the game is powerful women. The only reason why Joel is even on that mission is because Tess told him to as her dying wish. No dynamic is always 50/50. And i don't understand why people are bent out of shape that women are in charge.

We knew filler content was coming, but man they did it well.

Imagine being the scientist that discovers zombie fungus can now live in and occupy humans. Woof.

I like it. Still not sure about Ellie, but the bit with the Clickers was more intense than I thought it would be for being on TV. I think I got a little stressed lol

The line is right out of the game, although delivered at a different point.

I really don't like how they're rushing through things here. No idea why they're in such a hurry.

I appreciate how they're getting ahead of things here.

Like, I never thought Joel was a purely good guy. But I also never thought him a villain either. At least here they are being straight forward about their characters. For example, Ellie is clearly not a good person. There's darkness in her, right away.

They're doing a really good job with this show IMO.

Tendrils >>>> Spores

Like, way better. I fucking love how all the infected are all connected. Definitely needs to be implemented in Part III.

Also love the added filler

Great episode, beginning had me feeling the Chernobyl show runners style. Nice to the some added expansion to beyond the game. Ellie's dialogue was pretty on point, had to laugh at 'throw a sandwich at them'. Tess end was a cool change.

I don't think it is possible to survive in a world like this without some darkness in you. It is a pure Darwinist survival of the fittest type of environment. Nobody lives to even adulthood without getting some blood on their hands.

Ellie is meant to be a much more pure character you could argue that
Her relationship, connection, and upbringing by Joel turns her into a dark character. There's a point in the game where she kills her first person and she is pretty sick over it. Joel and Tess on the other hand are actually bad people. The line from the game is "we're shitty people joel, it's been that way for a long time"

Anybody else find it validating to have a video game adaptation that follows the source material this closely, only for it to be a huge hit?

Can't think of another adaptation that sticks this close. And certainly no adaptation as popular

I guess. One forgets so much about the game as it's so dense.

All I'll say is they're setting Ellie perfectly here. When she lets loose and starts murdering it's going to be well set up.

The museum was intense just like it was in the game. They definitely did not drop the ball when introducing clickers.

They looked hard as hell to kill too. Imagine how hard it will be to take down a bloater.

Anna Torv killed her performance, good shit

Man the clicker moment…the Tess one at the end.
This show is so good!

I loved the changes. They are distancing even more from the "zombie" concept than the game and im here for it.

I knew Tess wouldn't survive this episode and it still had an impact on me

Also, they foreshadow the fact that Joel is not really a kind hearted person early in the game/show.

The part where they drive into the city, not only does Joel feel no remorse leaving that family on the road he literally tells tommy to drive right through the crowd once they get into the city.

Joel has a deeper survival instinct than others which is probably why he's still alive

Why Dont We Have Both GIF

They've said they might use it in season 2 and there are quite a few parts in season 2 that will need it.

Yeah, this episode convinced me they made the right call. It's a nice variation that would be hard to pull off in a video game, but works perfectly in this medium.

I hated Tess death

They had to make it bombastic. Also, that "kiss" was weird. To think that Tess would just allow that to happen.

Great episode, but that ending kinda sucked, imo

The second episode was really fucking good too. It has some really good changes from the game that work really well I think. Though my favorite part was the stuff from before/during the outbreak. So far I was riveted during both episodes, especially during those parts.

I don't think she "allowed" it to happen.

From what I get with the fungus, they are all connected. That shit played with her brain to join the rest of the infected. They are all one

Edit: the infected didn't eat her. It wanted to link/connect with her. She was definitely not acting on her own will there

I really like the filler in the beginning. When she told them the only way to stop it was to bomb the city the look on the guy's face said it all. They were truly fucked and there was nothing they could do.

I agree, that was so shitty and that kiss part was so unnecessary and fucking dumb.

Yeah, they wanted to have her "shocked" into paralysis so she could have her kiss moment, but it seems out of character for her. She chatted with Robert nonchalantly with a giant purple melon for a face last episode. She's one cool cucumber 😎 🥒

Kind of a minor issue, but the show's so good it sticks out when something isn't pitch perfect

I hope you're right because that's awesome lol

Edit: but wait, why did she blow them up then?

Because she wasn't fully turned yet. She loses all of her AFTER the kiss. So before it happened she Still had some of her own will power in there.

After the kiss she becomes fully "connected"

I think future episodes will expand on this part of the lore more

So, the casting for Ellie is wrong. Don't get me wrong, this actress is doing a fine job with what she was given, and I understand the need to differentiate from the game, but it's just not Ellie.

Still, overall, this is a fantastic experience.

Side observation: Can you imagine having to deal with the show's infected "network" in the game? Christ, every single encounter would basically be a Crimson Head-esque experience.

I was luke warm on the first episode, but ended up coming around on it. Must have been in the wrong mood initially. I actually quite enjoyed it on a second attempt.

And this second episode started well enough. I was enjoying it. Then it started getting a little dumb. Performances in key moments fell a little flat. It started feeling real tropey. (I blame writing, not actors in both cases).

Then this shit straight-up jumped the fucking shark with the worst kiss in history. Get fucked, show. And with that, videogame adaptations are back to sucking ass. Corny fucking bullshit that would make a resident evil movie point and laugh.

No fucking way druckman wrote that lame shit.

I don't look at any of them as being "bad people". More shades of gray. Not everything is clear cut even with their actions being what they are. They have to survive.

I liked her in the small bit she was in Game of Thrones. She isn't clicking in this setting for me yet.

Read my posts above regarding the kiss. Seems a lot of people are missing the whole point of infected being connected

As good as the first episode was, this episode was even better.

God damn. Two 9+ out of 10 episodes to start the series. This show is going to be an all-time great of the genre.
