Horizon Forbidden West - Digital Foundry Tech Review - A PS5 Graphics Masterclass

I think odissey and valhalla have something similar but not sure if the quality is the same.

yep even odissey had this

But odissey doens't have a foam system like FW.
Can you swim underwater in these AC games? Honest question. Never played any.

If the graphics settings are the same the looks are equal no matter the framerate.

Response time is different that has nothing to do with how the game looks.

If what you mean is that you can't actually tell the difference between how 30fps and 60fps looks then you're an outlier.

For most people it's a clear, obvious, difference.

If I remember correctly Ubisoft has a sub company working on nothing else but Water :messenger_grinning:
And yeah, some Ubisoft games have great water...
I need to play FW on my tv before a final judgement, but before fw, ubisoft was queen of realistic looking water in open world games, a bit better than rdr2 if you ask me.
I think tlou2 also has incredible water\waves tech but it's a more stricted game.
Strangely enough, arkham knight has sublime water tech but you can't interact with it.

Sea of pirates when it comes to more cartoony type.

These (or those) are the kings.

Watch Dogs in 2014 was a cross gen game and it had incredible water that looked a gen ahead of Black Flag's already incredible ocean tech.

Don't you mean Ocean of Thieves? :pie_thinking:

It looks the same unless there is different graphical settings.

Let's make an example... a game in HIGH profile on PC will looks the same in 30fps, 60fps or 120fps.

John mentioned how YouTube understates what GG has accomplished with the PS5 version, and after downloading their 4k uncompressed review, I can confirm it makes a significant difference (shocker). I saw further improvement when I played the file on my OLED as opposed to my laptop. And of course quality will improve even further once more when I can run the game directly from the PS5 and in HDR. People will be able to fully appreciate just how big of a leap HFW for PS5 truly is on Friday.

I think it's long overdue for developers to start rethinking how they market their games because the popular video sharing platforms such as Youtube are doing them such a disservice to the presentation of their games. I don't understand why developers such as GG can't upload high bitrate versions of trailers directly to the PS app and maybe include HDR while they're at it. You should want to present your game in it's absolute best form.

You have to be a patreon member to download their uncompressed reviews right?

Fundamentally it looks like an up res'd ps4 game.

And I am starting to wonder if this gen will ever kill off shitty screen space graphics effects.

It's pretty sad we are not even out of cross-gen games yet and we are already seeing major sacrifices to get to 60 fps. Doesn't bode well for when they push these systems to their absolute peak.
Oh we're definitely going back to most games being 30 fps

Yeah of course. This is going to be a console thing probably forever I would think. At what point are we going to want to universally sacrifice better IQ for frame rate? I'd think never. At least not on console. PC is where it's at for not having to do those trade offs, but you pay for it.

Fuck me this is gonna be very hard to play in perf mode...4k mode looks CRISP AF.
So don't. I'm going to play at 4k30. Too much of a trade off to go 60fps and this kind of game plays just fine at 30.

Lol do you think 15fps looks the same as well?

How low can you go before you notice a difference?!

yeah fuck 60fps. performance mode looks blurry to me. Idk if its because I have 20/10 vision or something, but as games get prettier and prettier, pixel count becomes more and more important to me.

I want to inject every pixel into my eyes. Finally Uncharted4/TLoU2 graphics in a open world game. I fully expect all Playstation exclusives to look like this from this point on. Game that can show the most improvment is Ghost Of Tsushima 2. Nobody can convince me GOT has better graphics than even infamous:second son.

No chance dude, i'm gonna play at very hard and i need that sweet fluidity, i'm too used to play 95% of games at 60 on my pc (without renouncing too much at the eye candy)

Since you can switch on the fly between perf and res mode, i'm gonna explore more quiet places like temples, submarine locations, villages etc. in res mode, and when there is combat or exploration\climbing i'm gonna switch to perf mode, if i already know that there is a big reveal or cutscene, boom, switch to res mode.

Like the motto says, when life gives you various graphic modes, make lemonade...

As with Ratchet, anyone who plays this in Performance mode is missing out big time.
Theres 60fps games everywhere. Nothing new or exciting about it.
But games that look this good are rare. These are graphics we dreamed about as kids, gimping the visuals at 60fps is not how the game was meant to be played.

Imagine how hard it is for me that i have like 4-5 step beyond max sight (thanks laser operation).

But in combat centric game like this one, 60 fps are everything.

It's not like the graphics look like shit in perf mode, just less sharp.

2 years from now you'll say to yourself "wow these next gen only games look a lot better."

Some people were impressed with call of duty ghosts at ps4 launch too hehe…

I did the switch method there aswell, perf mode for combat, res mode for quieter moments and slow exploration.

this is not good. By constantly switching you are not only having to deal with immersion breaking menus but more importantly - you constantly remind your brain about the difference. Just play in 30 if you want to adjust.

Screen Space not going anywhere. Guerrilla could have leveraged the extra power to do raytraced lighting making the PS5 version look vastly different from the PS4 version yet they opted for the same old ass Light Probe GI paired with SSAO we've been seeing used since Xbox360/PS3 era.

Yep nothing impressive about this game to me.

Actually i'm more interested in how the base ps4 version turns out as that will be the lead version.

I'm not exactly a guy who really get immersed in games so much that changing mode from a menu really has a big impact...
There is no way that i'm gonna play a combat centric game at 30 frames if i can avoid it.

The difference between resolution and performance visually is one of the biggest I've seen for a console exclusive. No chance I'm touching this in performance mode.

I imagine that you cave your eyes out with a burning fork and sacrifice a lamb to some demon lord everytime you play a nintendo game on your switch, right??!

just joking a bit :lollipop_blowing_kiss:

It's so weird how some people seem to be actively cheering for a return to 30fps console games.

Is it just because they're sore about being wrong so far about 60fps never becoming standard?

Cos the idea that just because a trade off used to be made of frames for fidelity, then that will always be the case, is simply a fallacy.

Doom on switch, sure :p.

No doubt horizon is technically above what the switch can do i'm only saying that it's nothing I haven't seen before. It's a technically competent cross gen game, no more no less.

Though from an artistic perspective I don't like it at all.
