Horizon Zero Dawn livestream

Crossing Eden

Hello, my name is Yves Guillemot, Vivendi S.A.'s Employee of the Month!
Far Cry: Primal was a 50 dollar game not a 15 dollar game like Blood Dragon. Not a full fledged Far Cry game sure, but it wasn't a mere spin-off. And you will never find Ubisoft actually bragging about its sales in actual numbers.

Compare that with this:

https://www.pcgamesn.com/far-cry-4/ubisoft-s-sold-7-million-copies-of-far-cry-4
This was said by Ubisoft just 3 months after Far Cry 4 released, almost a year after Primal and we haven't heard anything.

You can also compare the steamspy numbers. Far Cry Primal has a third of the owners that 4 has even after Primal was actually discounted during the winter sale.

The sequel to Far Cry 4 is in a decline sales-wise compared to the previous game. That's a fact. Now you could say that that is because it is Primal and not 5 but that remains to be seen when 5 finally gets announced.
Far Cry Primal is still a spinoff despite the price, (because it had a higher budget than FC:BD, which iirc didn't even have cutscenes let alone a fully realized and unique open world). What they said about FC is that it's only been going up in sales and that they're working on overhauling the mechanics for the next mailine title instead of using FC3's core mechanics as a starting point.

Literally every horizon thread I've tried to follow. Can't wait to just hide away when I have the game to myself.

Zelda likely has better gameplay variety because the mechanics are suited to making a game with that level of variety. But Horizon is vastly more focused on its core combat and enemy design than Zelda is. Though Zelda will likely have its share of good combat moments as well. But Zelda has to rely on other systemic elements to enhance its combat and its not like it seems to handle them badly but it's clear to see the differences when one game doubles down on a handful of elements vs a game that tries to do pretty much everything.

Since apparently we are doing this, here's my take on Horizon vs Zelda

Horizon will be great. I think it reviews in the 87-92 range. As a game its treading the line of putting Uncharted/Tombraider level of characterisation and polish into a fully explorable theme park style open world. The base gameplay should be a fantastic shooter that is way beyond what you see in most RPGs thanks to GGs experience on the Killzone series and will move expectations of what combat in an RPG should look like to a much higher level then it currently is. Furthermore i expect the open world environment to allow for Dynamic set pieces to occur somewhat organically. The only faults most reviewers will find are likely going to be nitpicks.

Zelda Reviews in the 89-95 range. Ultimately what will push Zelda into this range is its Sandbox like nature and use of interactive systems that you can combine in unique and creative ways. For the most part it will be a highly competant ARPG, however what sets zelda apart is how the player can combine links abilities in creative and unusual ways, compared to most ARPGs where weapon/ability variety mostly just allows the player to chose their prefered playstyle. In Zelda because it is all Physics based the player will be able to break and remould the world to their ideal. This freedom of expression and that its the first HD Zelda is what will push this game into the mid 90s.

Your definition of a good character is Cole Train?

“Not intentionally -- we never did that,” he says when we ask essentially about an open-world ‘design master-list’. “But we do play a lot of games ourselves as well. A lot of us played [The Elder Scrolls V:] Skyrim and were quite impressed with the scale of that game back then, and I think subconsciously some of that inspired this world, you know, the density of content -- that was one of the first things we had to sort out; how often do you come across something, and how many variations do you put into that?

“But I think from a design point of view we also wanted to figure out those things by ourselves.”

The studio firmly tells us also that the game really did start with a demo of the T-Rex-inspired robot and, right from the outset, that if that demo couldn’t be made to work -- if the robot couldn’t essentially be sold as a living, grinding part of a game-world they hadn’t even imagined yet, then they’d scrap the idea and simply move on. And we’re certainly glad it worked.
For example, we don’t have quests designed for you to find out some kind of cultural detail. We tried to make sure that every quest had some kind of dramatic situation and in terms of the way that plays out over the course of the game, there’s no ‘tribal system’ per se, there are tribal groups that are distinct, however.”

These Horizon threads are ridiculous! Every thread gets partially derailed talking about other games, or people stating their distaste for the game only then to pull up some of the worst reasons/comparisons out there.

I just don't get it. Is it fanaticism? People worried that a game might be as good or maybe even better than their favourite games?

Is it partial jealousy? People that don't own a PS4 but want to play this game. Coming to the realisation that they won't own one by launch so they are trying to convince themselves they don't need it, because they just 'stole a bunch of mechanics from other games' yet the greatest modern RPG's released also have those features. Did anyone complain about those?

I.......don't know. I'm really looking forward to reviews (not the thread. At least until the reviews drop, then it will be fun to see the shift in the thread). I think this game will be a hit, but I also might be wrong. I'm definitely day 1 as it is hitting all the right notes for me, and I just have a feeling based on what we have seen that this game will be both commercially and critically successful.

Game looks really nice and the gameplay is solid. I like that the robots have weak points and you can focus on these or just hit them until they "die".
The game world looks absolutely beautiful and interesting. I don't know if i will get it day one, but i will surely have it in March.
Regular version is 70€ and Special Edition is 80€ in Greece, so i'm gonna grab the Special for sure!

This is probably the best preview yet. The Thunderjaw narration had me smiling - starts with 'I don't really want to be doing this.' and ending with 'Nopenopenope do not want do NOT want!' :)

Some good emergent gameplay & NPC action too. I liked the use of lures to get the Sawtooth into that copse with the trip wire traps which made the takedown easy.

From everything I've seen it looks like there's a lot of potential for experimentation with the robots - would be interesting to bait a Thunderjaw to follow you into a bandit village!

On the subject of melee, I guess there're too many Souls players used to hitting a giant boss creature's foot endlessly :) can't see that working on a T-Jaw or Snapjaw.

While I dont expect this game to hit 9+ on MC, I do expect it to be a solid first attemp at open world ARPG for GG.

Seems people still have a problem with people's lack of attraction to Aloy. Calling her a man is a bit much but I'm not sure why everyone hand-waves comments that claim she has masculine features.

Opinions...

Is this meant to be a plus?

Definitely predicting 85-92 reviews though. Reviewers love this kind of stuff.

It encroaches on "sharp knees" territory.

Is this meant to be a joke? Say what you will about both of those games, but in terms of actual characterization as it pertains to an actual narrative, you'd be hard-pressed to find a game that does it better than Uncharted.

What ? That's impossible... BotW is way much better than this...Better exploration, much better main character, music, enemies, puzzles, gameplay etc etc...

This is just like Far Cry Primal with robot dinos...Just it is
Total BS, and you must be from the future? Unless you played both games, you are talking out of your ass. We have seen just a fraction of either game.

This Aloy....is it he or she ? Lol but i had to ask this...

Embarassing....

i am talking about characteristics...Not color...This Aloy didnt give me that special thing...WD2 char had that and Infamous 2 char also...I can give lots of examples...

But remember Heavenly Sword, Cole Train etc...They were so good...I played gears 3 multi so much just for Cole Train char...

Cole Train? LOL what did he give you that was special? As stereotypical and poor a character as there is. Clearly trolling.

Someone is threatened by Horizon.

It was yeah. Feel free to substitute in Cinematic Action games if that works better for you. One of the things i love about linear games that feel more cinematic is how they use their scope to focus on writing specific moments well due to the shorter nature of those games giving the moments an increased sense of
weight.

I think Horizon seems to be doing that, but with the added benefit of creating a sense of place that only an open world can.

I don't know if they upped the ante in UC4 but this is most definitely not true in the first three, and the two recent Tomb Raider games were embarrassing in terms of narrative and characterisation, comparable to DmC. Have you played them?

To claim Horizon will have such amateur writing is an insult to the game. I'm not going to make any assumptions because it's far too early. But I'd hope Aloy develops as a character and shows far greater depth than the two games mentioned. As an rpg with a more lengthy narrative, there's far more space for character development and exploration.

Hell Yakuza 0 which just came out was barely character focused at all but it still had far better characterisation (for Majima anyway).

I don't know how anyone could mistake Aloy for a man. She's even wearing some kind of skirt.

Hyperbole.

Like how one could say the current link looks like a girl. Although, give him a few curves and I'd believe it.

Oh my... We are letting the thread to derail...

Horizon should be praised for their instance of having a woman that does not look like a model, as they stated this before.

It should also be praised for bringing elements that makes sense and refine that - based on gameplays shown and the recent stream.

It let you target some parts of specific bots to open weakness, or shoot parts to harvest something for later. You can lure a Thunderjaw and see the rest of the bots run away.

You can tame some bots and even use different strategies to bring down enemies, like the arrow with rope. I even want to know if it is possible to use it as trap, landing it on trees or anything higher, so they couldn't run from me.

I'm sorry to bring it to light, but, whenever a game brings something really new, it's called niche in a blink of an eye. See Gravity Rush.
(I love Gravity Rush)

You could say Watch Dogs is copying other games, the new Zelda is copying other games, Pokemon, Mario, Digimon, Call of Duty, Battlefield, Skyrim, Doom are copying other games.

If something, os trully original and daring, It won't reach mainstream and probably you won't hear about it for years, if it even is bring up to light. That's how it works for everything, not just games.

I'm not demeriting any of those games here. I'm saying that those who use this argument to take value away from other games should just try to reflect.

So, can we please focus discussing in what se think it could be better, with reasons and substance, or just praise what we think it's good?

Sorry for the long post.
