I don't understand the dislike towards the Xbox consoles

GAF simply loves their Sony.
Simple as that. Xbox fans are few and far between here - or left a long time ago.
Xbox is still my favorite console.

Im someone who currently has 14 consoles hooked up to various setups in my house.
Fuck fanboys. Im a fan of gaming - the entire history of the medium.

Xbox has the best controller on the planet. Period. If im going to play a videogame, I want the best controller.
No way im being forced to play 3rd party games on that trash bottom of the barrel dual shock/sense.
Brook converters for using Xbox controllers on my PS1/2/3 is one of the greatest inventions of mankind.

I used to be forced to buy a Playstation console solely for Metal Gear.
Those days are over - I have the entire MG series on Xbox now outside of MGS4 - which is likely coming soon anyways.

Xbox now (as in just this year) is getting pretty much all the shmups and JRPGs the other consoles have.
For example, I have the entire Toaplan and Psikyo library on Xbox. Even obscure things like Under Defeat - now on Xbox.
Final Fantasy Tactics is now on Xbox. FF1-XVI. All the Dragon Quests. I mean - I dont even need another JRPG beyond those.

Ill still take Panzer Dragoon Orta, Ninja Gaiden Black and II, Virtual On OOT, and Halo MCC over anything on Playstation.
Anything.

The next gen - all I want from Xbox is access to my existing 20+ years of my xbox library and Steam access.
If it has that - I wont need another console (outside of Nintendo) again.

It's not that people hate Xbox. People hate Microsoft and the people that are currently running Xbox.

Yeah, I remember way back when MS first entered the gaming space with the original Xbox - there were a lot of concerns about the impact they could have (based on the way the handled Windows, etc.). However, everything was fine until the Xbone reveal. That gave a real good look into the direction MS wanted gaming to head in and it's just grown worse over the years with the acquisitions, studio closures, game cancellations, lies, FUD, etc.

Agreed on the leadership too. MS' absolute refusal to hire competent leadership even as the brand falls apart around them says a lot about how much they really value Xbox.

As a 90s/00 gamer:

- I have deep distrust and dislike for MS

- The game library has never been super diverse

- They've always just desired to shut PS down, never really built much on their own merit. My proof of this is how hard they targeted traditional PS games (GTA, MGS, ETC, to an extension (via developer) sunset overdrive)

- Wonky af controller

- RRoD and their ridiculous response initially

- HDDVD lol

- No organic in house studios worth mentioning, simply buying out the competition / studios to try to shut everybody else down in huge swaths (Bethesda, King/Blizzard/Acti)

- forcing proprietary bs (hard drives)

- No rechargeable battery on their 360 controllers and then convincing their minions that was actually a good thing lol

- That POS Max (their automated telephone support bot)

- INTRO-EFFING-DUCED PAY TO PLAY ONLINE AND MICROTRANSACTION BS THAT PLAGUES OUR INDUSTRY NOW

- Every time they lose they have to try to burn the industry down (game pass and the war on physical).

That about does it.

.

I'm old enough to remember when GAF, N4G, etc. All had RIDICULOUSLY slanted bias towards Xbox.

So I don't really accept that.

It use to be quite the opposite. People just left Xbox and could no longer defend their bs eventually, and the good will from Halo and Forza seems like a distant memory.

  • GAF: The shittier PS5 gets, the more they lash out at Xbox. That is actually what happens on here at least. The worst generation in the history of Playstation and it's not even close.
  • Market: they just aren't hitting the sales numbers. It doesn't have the big blockbuster mainstream titles that show off well at Game Awards like Sony, or the best designers in the industry like Nintendo with their stable of IP. They have lots of interesting and weird games that most people tend to overlook or don't give a chance or they're experimental and in genres they don't play.
  • Xbox Fans: Pretty much just upset about the GP price increase, and that's really it. Everything else is great. They put out an insane amount of games this year alone, GP is crushing it on lineup. 1000xRESIST just got added in 3 weeks and Powerwash Simulator. Can't even keep up.
Better get your ass in that BALLxPIT.

I'm sure this just happened in a vacuum.

There are reasons why this happened and they lie outside this forum in the real world.

Every platform has its haters, even Steam has some, what all of them have and Xbox doesn't is enough lovers and users who actually like them to keep them afloat and thriving.

I still primarily use my Xbox as my main console, but I've started switching to pc over the past year or two mainly because I've started playing more steam games (because the family sharing stuff now works right there).

I honestly think none of these consoles anymore (ps, xbox, or switch) are consumer friendly. They're all doing anti-consumer things constantly, for the past couple years it seems like they're trying to 1up each other on trying to screw consumers more. Xbox with their console prices and game pass price rises, PS with a ps5 pro with no disc drive plus being expensive (and ps+ not being great), Nintendo just being Nintendo charging $70/$80 for remakes, etc. They've all turned into cable companies/blockbuster in my opinion, companies that you once loved because of the content you could get from them but then they took that love and used it to extort consumers the max possible.

Steam is the only place where I feel they're not anti-consumer yet. So they're getting more and more of my money.

Not about buying the console, but rather the ongoing dislike, which drags along the actual gaming hardware that plays the games more beyond the exclusives. I think the dislike is so heavy that the hardware suffers for no reason

It's understandable to feel like the hardware gets a bad rap. It's good hardware and doesn't deserve the treatment Xbox and MS have given it.

But hopefully, now that you've read what people are saying, you no longer believe that the hardware "suffers for no reason." It suffers for many good reasons.

i liked the 360 and original xbox but current xbox is trash. it has no games, paying to play online is a scam and it has drm elements on it. any franchise they had in the past was ruined, but keep in mind if feel the same way for sony.

Also remember there's a whole lotta people who hate ms without thinking about Xbox at all. Console folks don't always pick up on that and jump in the fray. The multi-month uwp debate on here illustrated that very well.

Ainem Enamas Ainem Enamas , you already got your answer. You're ignoring people making the best points and mostly responding to off-hand comments. Microsoft is the problem. They devalued the Xbox brand, and if Xbox moves third-party (which it increasingly looks like they are doing) then there is no reason to buy into the Xbox ecosystem.

Would you rent a house or apartment if you knew the owner was behind on payments and the place could be foreclosed in the near future? No, because that would be retarded. This is the same situation with Xbox. Why buy the next Xbox if Microsoft is making all of the moves that indicates that they aren't staying in the console business?

The hardware is not, and (with the exception of the launch Xbox One) never was, the issue at hand. The issue is that the company behind the device is throwing away all reason to buy into the Xbox ecosystem. You want to play Halo? It's going to come to PlayStation. You want to play Starfield? It's coming to PlayStation. You want to play Gears of War? It's coming to PlayStation.

Tell me why you would pick an Xbox over a PlayStation if Xbox's games are going to be released on PlayStation? Why wouldn't you want to just buy one PlayStation to play all of Sony and Microsoft games instead of buying two different consoles (or just sticking with an Xbox and not getting to play PlayStation games)?

I mean, I know that. Same thing could be said for the Dreamcast which I also had. Didnt have those mainstream blockbusters but had a lot of varied and weird content that a niche audience of people were into. Wasn't enough to keep it going but it had fans.

Without Xbox, so many legendary games would be missing—it would be criminal.

Ninja Gaiden 1 & 2 alone were worth buying a console for.

Every Xbox console has been great to me—even the One with Kinect. I freaking love gimmicky peripherals and have some really great memories playing Dead Rising 3 and Titanfall.

It's possible that he wasn't really asking a question but making a statement. I can't read his mind, so I don't know. But maybe "I don't understand why people don't like Xbox consoles" = "I like Xbox consoles, and you guys are being unfair."

Well, if you can play Arkham Knight, maybe I should go shell out $800 for it.
They had a price increase right, recently? If now I would buy a console, personally, would pick the cheapest option.
edit: for the Quick Resume I would pay a little bit more. Does the PS5 has similar feature?

I've been a PlayStation gamer my whole life; I've been a PS user for over 20 years. It wasn't until about two years ago that I bought an Xbox Series X. The work they've done with backward compatibility on some games is truly fascinating, and in some cases even free, while PlayStation was charging $39 for something you could have had for free on Xbox. There's a real sense of continuity across their consoles, which is great. Unfortunately, I find their controller very poor compared to the DualSense, and I've never found exclusives that were truly game-changing. There's a very childish backlash against Xbox on NeoGAF. Competition is always good. Sony's best era, when they dared to release strong exclusives, offered software-based backward compatibility, expanded their catalog, and made their console truly interesting, was during the PS3 era — precisely when they were losing ground to the Xbox 360. Arrogant Sony is the worst.

And beyond that, 3rd party games are skipping it left and right. I feel bad for regular gamers who aren't terminally online shitposters who are heavily invested in the Xbox ecosystem.

Heck, even Baldur's Gate 3 showed the Xbox Series S/X restrictions worked against them. If I recall correctly, Microsoft ended up allowing Larian Studios to cut features/functionality from the Xbox Series S version in order to be able to release the game on Xbox. Which has got to be a kick in the teeth to Xbox Series S owners who were told that while texture quality might be lower, the Xbox Series S would have feature parity with Xbox Series X games.

Loved my 360 until became the most expensive paperweight I ever had. Remember back in the day ? Full of youtube videos of 360 mods cutting a freaking square hole in the chassis with a cooler attached into it? They released a defective product. It was an absolute mess. And please don't bring the ps3 yellow light, there wasn't nothing like that, it's not even comparable. Comfortable controllers though..

Yeah Series S was Phil stepping on another rake for absolutely no reason. And it was so predictable even at the time.

The Dreamcast was honestly more of a victim of Sega's past bad decisions (Sega CD, 32X, Nomad, Saturn rollout) more than anything else. I honestly don't know anyone who hates Sega, even when I was a SNES kid I didn't hate the Mega Drive/Genesis.

They spent a lot of money on experiments and infighting regional offices' ideas, and in the meantime they lost the trust of big retailers and publishers.

But other than that, the Dreamcast had excellent games in all my genres, it's easily my favorite console of all time.

I was using the absolute hell out of it, but the price increase is a bit too crazy.

Having to pay for a lower tier without COD just to play online was a dealbreaker of note. I have a decent enough PC, so screw paying to play stuff online.

Then I wanted to buy BF6 and realised, oh fuck, I can't buy any more games on this thing without paying rent, it's over. Going to have to sell it off or something. Maybe keep it around for when I get the urge to play something from my old library of stuff.

All over a stupid GP price increase.

I'm fortunate to have the pc, otherwise I'd be stuck to pay the multiplayer tax, but thanks to having options, I can just bounce.
It is pricey

- trying to make an always online console, and U turn when received backlash
- trying to raise price again and U turn again

always U-turn.

a very dishonest company tbh, at least sony finger your anus infront of you

Hold on, there are so many posts coming in, I try to respond who quoted me first
I simply want to play something. Lately I tend to play older games, and Quick Resume is very useful

It's not the console itself for me, i've got nothing against Xboxes it's the company in charge of it that's the problem, Microsoft! and their bad gaming decision's.

It has nothing to do with Xbox and its games.
It has to do with Phil Spencer, his yes-man underlings, and the Xbox fanboys with parasocial relationships with the Xbox suits.

If I were to write everything disgusting about Phil Spencer and the trained Xbox fanboys, it would be a long post... so I'll summarize:

Phill Spencer fantasizing about a "stellar career moment" of buying Nintendo with Office money, and in another email, he victimized himself because "evil Sony" forced him to buy a "forced bundle" of the PS5 with Horizon Forbidden West.

If you don't understand how deceitful, lying, and self-serving Phil Spencer is, nothing I write beyond this will make you understand.

Yes. You put PS5 in Rest Mode, then come back and boot it up (takes about a second), and it resumes where you left off. I think the main difference is that the Xbox Quick Resume allows multiple things to be put on hold at once, whereas the PS5 Rest Mode only allows one thing at a time to be put on hold. Personally, I've never needed to put multiple things on hold at the same time, so the difference doesn't matter to me.

Ironically enough Quick Resume is a feature that would have been far more useful on an actual handheld Xbox.
