:O Never thought I'd see you say that
Hah. Me either.

But really, the benefits of OC'ing seem to top off around 4.8ish.

The big deals with Ivy means PCI-E 3.0 and USB 3.0 native. Haswell is kind of an iteration on this. People who want to push their procs to 5.5+GHz wouldn't be asking, "should I buy now?" They'd simply say, "I already had Nehalem, SB, IVB, and now I'll also be buying Haswell!"

Makes sense, I wouldn't jump up from a Sandy / Ivy to Haswell, but I'm on an ancient Core 2 Quad, figured I waited this long, why not wait a few extra weeks haha

Okay guys, was hoping to get some help here. I built my PC about a year ago and haven't had any problems as of yet; however, this morning I woke up and noticed it had shut off. I looked and the plug looked loose in the wall, so I pushed it in and turned it on. My PC started up fine, but there were some weird things going on. For some reason my PC wouldn't recognize the audio device for my TV(which I use every day). I then tried rebooting my PC and get a "windows failed to start" message, which after some diagnostics spits out an error code "0x490". FINALLY, I rebooted again and everything came up fine/audio and everything's working again too.

So I guess my question is....what the hell just happened?

A ghost walked through it.

Sounds like your boot manager was corrupted somehow, but it may have fixed itself. Could be a failing drive, might not be.

So that asus 144hz monitor that's like 270 is the one to get, right? I can't believe I've stuck with my tv this long, it's so dim and uneven. My computer is still killing it though.

For super responsive gameplay, yeah. It definitely improves the illusion of motion and gives general computer use a much more crisp feel.

If you want big pretty colors though, you might want to look at some IPS panels.

MSI GT 70
Not a big fan of the lights, but I did recommend 2 older MSI laptops to people (Think it had 9800M) and they've been running great. Good value too.

3 mSATA SSD's in Raid 0 is absurd. As is that power. Good lord.
PC GAF, any of you guys getting the Shield?
Nope. No need for me.
Haggling with a guy on Craigslist for a 660ti ( Asus DCU 2GB). If I can get him down to $175 is it a worthwhile upgrade from my 1GB 6870?
Yes, stress test it on site if you can with FURMark or MSI Kombustor

Yes
What's your current favorite 670? Still the GIGABYTE 670?
Any of the dual / tri-fan coolers. Go with whatever is available and cheapest. Usually is the Gigabyte at $20-$40 cheaper. Mine OC's like a beast as well. All are good.
Having a bit of a problem here

On startup, I get an message "CPU fan error", no idea how to resolve this.

Mobo can read my hard drives but its just having a hard time booting my old hd, the only option is going to system restore but its gets stuck to continue

hallp
Gotta run some diagnostics, something sounds busted. System specs?

I'd start by replugging all power and data headers, dusting the system, running memtest 86+ and a HDD diagnostic. Backup any important data first if you need to.

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?
Kaze Maru 2 140mm (with 120mm holes) fan the go-to?

Reading reviews, it sounds like one of the best fans you can buy for any application. Anyone have em and can comment?

EDIT:

Ugh... I've got to stop looking at this shit.

HYPOTHETICALLY... If I *were* to do a water cooling setup...

I would need:

3x120mm radiator for front intake
2x120mm radiator for top exhaust/intake
Five fans if they're not included
CPU block
GPU block x2
Pump
Reservoir
Tubing
Compression fitings
Water

... Correct? Is that a comprehensive list?

It seems I could maybe get away with just one radiator; but I'd prefer two for a clean and more uniform look, and so I can be certain it's working at its best.

Some radiators have pumps built in. Would one internal pump be enough? Could I skimp on the pump? Doesn't seem wise...

Then, in the future, everything will continue to work as I upgrade. The only things I have to replace are the GPU blocks?

Looking around, it looks like if I bargain shop but still buy nice, I can do the whole setup for about $500 - blocks and everything. Is that about right?

Any other tips? Seems like a lot of work and I'm not sure... Just toying.

Every SSD I check is out of stock. What the hell?

Anything good for Windows + like 1 game?

Seatools said good. Will a old SATA HDD work on a newer mobo?
m4 or 840 Pro. Although I've been coming around to the regular 840 given how much it's price has been dropping...

SATA is SATA, it'll be fine.

Thanks man. Looks like atm GB 670 is about the same price as the EVGA 670 FTW. Just kind of conflicted since everyone talks the great support EVGA has if something goes south.

Not sure if that's more important or a card that runs cooler and overclocks well like I've constantly heard about the GB 670.

We are pretty satisfied with it but is there any way to lower the price (even just a bit) but still offer the same kind of performance as this rig?

Haswell launches in 2 weeks and should be priced around the same as Ivy. scan.co.uk said they will get stock on 3rd. Wait for that and its motherboard if you can.

You don't really need a sound card onboard is good enough for most. Not sure about the power supply, not the ones usually recommended around here. I would go with this. http://www.scan.co.uk/products/520w...ronze-sli-crossfire-eps-12v-quiet-fan-atx-psu

You should also get some low profile ram, some coolers can get in the way of the big fins.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, and if it isn't please redirect me...

My PC is in a study/office-type room, which is about 10-12 meters away from my router (which is in the living room). The problem is the signal is just not good enough to be acceptable, and I'm getting pretty tired with it. A wired connection is out of the question, unfortunately.

So, I'm looking at getting a repeater/extender. I plan to put it in the hallway (about halfway between the two) and hopefully things will improve.

I'm looking at this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B007SU0BJU/

Anyone use anything like this? I'd love to sort this out, as I've largely given up using my gaming PC and pretty much play console-only in the living room anymore, thanks to Steam taking ages to boot, and the connection being either really weak or not even there at all.

Wait for Haswell®

I wouldn't go with that PSU either, this is better http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B005JS580A/

Swap your RAM to lower profile stuff like this http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0037TO5C0/ or this Samsung stuff if you can afford it http://www.cclonline.com/product/84...800C11-1600MHz-30nm-Dual-Channel-Kit/RAM0612/

MSI Z77A-GD55 is also a better motherboard, not that it matters if you're going Haswell. You could also think about dropping the DVD drive as well, what are you going to use it for? If you do that you could put the £20 towards a bigger SSD.

Yeah, will definitely wait for Haswell now since it's launching soon enough.
We actually still do need a DVD Drive though, believe it or not haha. Plus, we may be getting a bigger SSD anyway but we'll see.

I was actually looking at that Samsung RAM but then swapped it out to Corsair just not too long ago.

Thank for the recommendations, will definitely look into the other component you guys have recommended!

Yeah you're not going to lose out by waiting 3 weeks or so, might as well get the latest technology if you're in no rush. If you want a decent sized but well priced SSD Kingston do some good ones, the 120GB V300 is around £75 or so and would be my choice at that end of the market. That Samsung RAM is good stuff, overclocks like a dream and is extremely low profile. Sort of thing you have to see to believe how small they've made it.

PSU though is something definitely worth changing, that Seasonic up above is another great unit. You'll not go wrong with it or the be quiet!.

Dumb question but do I really need to get any special tools to assemble my build? I was going to get some thermal paste if I do get a heatsink.

Quick question,
I recently started running F@H on my laptop (kinda OT I know) and I was wondering which PC card has the best OpenCL performance per dollar (or Euro in my case). Moreover, a quick search did not find any topic dedicated to GPGPUs here.

TL;DR Which card has the best openCL performance/monetary unit

AMD's stuff is by far the best for OpenCL performance

For F@H Nvidia is better though.

If I had a nickel.....

My thoughts on the M65:

While at Fry's a week ago, I picked up the Corsair M65 for $40 on a whim. It's pretty, so it got me there.

Pros

-Avago ADNS9800 Sensor, it's the best out there.
-Fit and finish - best looking and constructed mouse I've ever used.
-Comfort - extremely comfortable to use for an extended period.
-Software that allows for rebinding of all the buttons as well as user defined DPI settings that you can select with the lower middle mouse buttons.
-Adjustable weight
Cons

-RMB and LMB are way too sensitive, taking almost no force to depress.
-Native acceleration above and beyond the standard 9500/9800 issue, and there was no option for removing it in the software.
-Can be a bit bulky for those preferring smaller mice.

A bit more depth

It's a very well built mouse with some random issues that prevent me from suggesting it over the Sensei, but there can be an instance where it is recommended. Mainly, if you have big hands.

The RMB and LMB being so easy do depress actually had me laying my fingers straight over the buttons and depressing them with my knuckle to prevent accidental clicking. This was not something I was doing consciously either.

The built in acceleration was way too heavy. Even at 800 CPI, I would be overshooting dramatically on whips in Warsow and Quake Live. Turning down the CPI further did not alleviate the issue either.

Conclusion

Sensei still king.

So, I still recommend the Sensei/Sensei Raw.

Just ordered a new Intel after replacing every other component in my PC that stopped posting. It was an i5 2500k for reference...

Thankfully never. Did you try RMAing it before ordering a new one?

No, since I didn't have another to test.

I've tried the same CPU in 2 motherboards with two different kinds of ram and neither posts. Both give memory errors but in the case of the asus board the CPU led does blink red at startup before turning off at which point the dram light is solid red.

Tried with a different psu too just to make sure.

So the CPU is the only other possibility I can think of. Just don't know why it stopped working in the old board in the first place.

Hoping the new one works and them Ill send the old one to intel and try to sell the one I get back. I hear they're good about returns for retail stuff.

Yeah, the thing is it's so uncommon for a CPU to die you get really frustrated troubleshooting.

Has anyone got the Asus VG248QE? I'm in 2 minds if I should get it. Do I go for a higher refresh rate and quick response time or a higher resolution. I have 2 monitors at the moment one is a LCD montior but I'm using a LED Monitor TV.

I've been able to compare the response times with one being 4ms and the other 8ms apart from that they are both 24" 60hz and 1080p. Only reason I'm using the LED is due to it having speakers.

I've noticed when playing games like FIFA that the monitor I use now has alot of ghosting on the ball while the old one has rarely none. Also racing games look much sharper at high speeds.

I think I would be fine with 1080p and have smoother gameplay. I'm just wondering will 1440p/120hz displays be released and if so how long down the line? Are there ant other monitors I should check out? I've read quite alot about Benq.

Well, at least it's somewhat assuring that a new CPU will fix the problem.

Just wish I hadn't bought a new motherboard, graphics card, power supply, and ram first though lol.

I'd love a bit of advice from those here that are a bit more imvolved in the upgrade cycles please!

Got the itch to upgrade the gaming PC and have some money saved up, but currently, I'm still getting great performance from my PC.

i7 920
GTX 285
8 gigs RAM
(no OCing)

I am hankering for an upgrade and was looking at a 3570/k and 670 system.

Obviously this is basically a new machine so if I can scratch the itch with just a video card upgrade, that's going to give the most return correct? Not running anything that'll really tax the procesor so there's not much benefit there right?

I realise the new releases are on the horizon too so I'm just looking for a bit of input:

the smart money is to beef up the videocard and hold off until the PC just cannot deliver the performance I want right?

Not as much fun as a whole new system though...

thanks in advance

OC your CPU and upgrade your GPU is what I'd do, that i7 is still a good chip. If that doesn't satisfy you Haswell isn't far off.
