I'd love a bit of advice from those here that are a bit more imvolved in the upgrade cycles please!

Got the itch to upgrade the gaming PC and have some money saved up, but currently, I'm still getting great performance from my PC.

i7 920
GTX 285
8 gigs RAM
(no OCing)

I am hankering for an upgrade and was looking at a 3570/k and 670 system.

Obviously this is basically a new machine so if I can scratch the itch with just a video card upgrade, that's going to give the most return correct? Not running anything that'll really tax the procesor so there's not much benefit there right?

I realise the new releases are on the horizon too so I'm just looking for a bit of input:

the smart money is to beef up the videocard and hold off until the PC just cannot deliver the performance I want right?

Not as much fun as a whole new system though...

thanks in advance

Just replace your GPU and consider OCing your CPU. Hold out for as long as you can as the CPU you have is great.

Okay... where do companies like OriginPC and Digital Storm get their parts to build laptops. Is there some kind of retailer out there that sells parts? Like boards, GPUS, laptop husk with monitor.

Going to give my brother my 2600K with Asus P8P67 Pro board. Already have a 3770K, just need to pick out a motherboard. Will be used mostly for gaming paired with my 670, with the odd video conversion here and there. Also will overclock the cpu a bit. Had my 2600K at 4.5Ghz for 24/7 use.

Deciding between these 3 boards, but any other suggestions are welcome. Around a $200 budget.

MSI Gaming

MSI MPower

Asus Maximus V

Unless you really plan on pushing an OC, there's really no need for the ASUS or MPower. Aesthetics would be the other portion.

I'd go for the gaming board.

Does anyone have their R4 box in handy?

Could someone give me the dimensions of the box? I have to get surgery on my knee in Florida while my computer is in California...trying to figure out how much it weighs and what the dimensions are...

Cross posting from B/S/T trade thread if anybody is interested..

Selling:

MSI Lightning Xtreme 3GB 580s

Single card for $225

or

Both $435

PS4O95Q.jpg

Vv1QLpF.jpg

These were the top among the top editions of the gtx 580 and are very over clockable. PM if interested!

So I'm updating my AMD drivers to 13.5 Beta2, and at the top of the download page it says:
NOTE! You must un-install AMD Catalyst™ 13.4 (if you have already installed AMD Catalyst 13.4) before installing AMD Catalyst 13.5 Beta.

I have 13.3 Beta3 installed. Do I also need to uninstall?

I'm looking to buy a cheap 100-200 laptop for mostly writing. I'm fine with refurb or open box? Any suggestions would be great. Right now I'm thinking about:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834131484

If you will be doing a lot of typing you can't go wrong with an IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad or a MacBook. Most any of them have good keyboards, but it may be hard to find one under $200.

For that price, to get one with a good keyboard (as far as laptops go) and a good screen with adequate power I'd get an older Dell Latitude or Precision assuming you don't mind something larger and heavier than a netbook or macbook air. An M440 with the Quadro FX 770M would be pretty nice if you could find one around $250.

For the record I have an HP Elitebook 2370p, I got it with the extended battery and dock for around $250. If I had the money I'd have picked up either a newer Dell Precision or the HP 2470p as both have a much better keyboard than mine.

Probably a bit OT, but what was your first build or major upgrade? I think my first upgrade was a PCI 3DFX card on my mother's computer to play Half-Life. I was living with her while my girlfriend and I were split up (now married 10 years) and that game along with Baldurs Gate kept me same.

I think my first build was an Athlon Barton 2500 and GeForce 4200 card with an Nforce2 mobo in a lian li case with a SB Audigy card. Great PC that I just recently binned.

First upgrade was adding a 3.5 inch floppy to my 386, which only had a 5.25 inch 1.2 MB drive, as games were hard to find in that format I upgraded, didn't of course realize that the old drive I had was only a 720k one. I learned from that experience.

I think my first build was an Athlon 2500 Barton as well, I had an ATI 9600 on that one.

Was 17, put whole pc together by myself(my previous one actually). Before that I used other people's services for hardware upgrades, added wifi card myself or something minor like that and most of PCs were pre built anyway.

I remember opening up my Commodore Vic-20 just because I wanted to see what was doing inside. My dad came in and was so pissed because he had just dropped a bunch of money on it. Come to think of it, I have no idea how much those things actually cost back then...? He was disenchanted with the whole thing because I had sold him on "learning" with it and then all I did was play Gorf and Cosmic Cruncher.

As far as actual productive upgrades, the first one I did was putting a Soundblaster Pro in my 486. That thing was a beast, 66mhz with a 200mb hard drive. Aces of the Pacific was the shit back then. Then I bought the sequel, Aces Over Europe, and it ran so crappy....that was the first time I had to start begging my parents for upgrade money....

Now I am 38, and I have to beg my wife for upgrade money. It never ends...

Granted it uses quite a bit of power, but this thing will eat a 660Ti for lunch, more in like with 670 performance. It'll outperform both at higher resolutions. Someone should buy this/these.

Regarding the USB3 sleep issue with Haswell, has there been any word from motherboard manufacturers about availability of their motherboard range before C2? I am wanting to build a new PC in July when I have time off and the USB3 issue doesn't concern me (I never use sleep) but at the same time I want to get a good motherboard.

This is true. Great cards. Love em...to bad they couldn't co exist with my FT02.

I'm going to use your endorsement as a testimonial in my b/s/t post btw :p

Gah, so frustrated. Maybe I'll find some sympathy here :).

I decided to switch my HTPC from Ubuntu to Windows in order to use it as a gaming PC as well. It has two drives: my main 1tb drive and another 2tb drive that I use for most of my movies and stuff. On the 1tb drive I made two partitions: one for boot and the other for system (C drive). I installed Windows XP (planning to upgrade to 7 once I buy it), and to my dismay it for some reason made my 2tb drive C drive. Why would it do that? I don't want my boot and my system files on two separate drives. The crazy thing is XP doesn't ask you what drive you want to be C, it just chooses. And then it is impossible to change the system drive after that. It seems the only way to get Windows to label my drives correctly is to reinstall XP with all drives unplugged except for my 1tb, thereby forcing Windows to deem my partition worthy of becoming C drive. How, pray tell, did that make it past testing? Anyway, I'm reinstalling XP now with my 2tb disconnected and no thumb drives or anything plugged in to erroneously become my new C. I just know the MBR is going to be fucked up too.

Anyway, thanks for listening to me rant :).

Edit: Two hours and a reinstall later and everything's working great. That rant might not have been necessary...

Well like a complete dumbass I accidentally broke my new monitor I bought in November. So now I need a new one. Are there any recommendations before I order or will any brand do? I would like to stay under $400 and 24inch screen.

Appreciate any help.

I am so close to buy the BenQ XL2411T. I currently have SyncMaster 2333HD, which is a monitor-tv hybrid.

The XL2411T will cost me £230.00.

These are the specifications of my rig that I put together last year,
i5-3570K @ 4.5GHz
Gigabyte GTX680 2GB Super OC
P8Z77-V
16GB Corsair DDR3 Vengeance
256GB M4 SSD

I've got a couple of newbie questions.
1. Do I need to constantly hit 120 FPS in order to see the benefit of a 120Hz monitor?
2. Is it true that VSync is made redundant when using a 120Hz monitor?
3. Are there any better choices in the same price range?

Thank you :)

Just a quick question. I've just ordered a evga nvidia gtx 660 sc 3gb for £160
Now I'm wondering if I can even use it, maybe my PSU isn't up to it? What about the rest of it?

AMD FX 4100 (4x 3.60GHz) AM3+
8gb Kingston DDR3 1333mhz
Motherboard Asus M5A78L-M LX
500w Cooler Master Elite

currently upgrading from a 550ti

Should I cancel my order, will it work with what I have now?

All LCD technology right now is full of compromises. All true 120hz monitors are using matte TN panels so you're trading colour stability and image quality for better motion performance. Taking that into account...

1. For the smoothest possible experience you want to maintain the same FPS and your monitor's refresh rate. But so long you maintain above 60 FPS, you're going to experience smoother movement and less ghosting.

2. Whether or not you have to use it depends on the game you're playing.

To put it simply, Vsync synchronizes your FPS with your monitor's refresh rate. This is to prevent noticeable tearing, which occurs when the video card is outputting frames significantly faster than the monitor can update.

This means in many more stressful games, you can potentially leave Vsync off. For things like CS:GO, you're going to need Vsync on if you don't want tearing.

3. In the United Kingdom, that's the cheapest decent 120hz monitor. The main competitor, the Asus VG248QE, is around 50 quid more expensive.

It'll work but the limiting factor is that CPU. Usually I'd say to overclock it but that mobo couldn't handle it. From looking at it too it can apparently throttle your CPU even at stock clocks.

Thanks for the reply

Looking at my PSU looks as though it only has 1 x 6 pin PCI-E and the card requires 2. So basically that means it won't work right?

So I'm looking to finally upgrade my current gaming rig, built this PC a couple years ago and it's starting to show a bit of age. Most newer games run fine, but I'm looking for higher fps with the fancy effects and DX11 stuff. I just bought a 250gb samsung 840, as my old WD raptor died and I wanted to see what an SSD alone would do to improve performance.

Current build:
Athlon 645 3.1ghz
4GB DDR3 1600 ram
2GB Radeon 6950

My question is, what is the next upgrade here I would see the biggest benefit from? I was thinking of jumping to an i5 3570k, but it is my understanding new CPUs are right around the corner. I also want to make this upgrade as economical as possible, so I likely won't be buying the absolute newest and fastest tech either. So what do GAF? Do I wait it out and enjoy my new ssd, or am I ordering more parts tonight?

Just an idea: We have this thread for discussing hardware and helping people with builds, but what if we had a separate thread for everyone to post pictures of their present and previous builds? This would be a thread just for people to post pictures of their rig(s) and interior shots
and cable management and matching colors
. Perhaps called: "Showcase Your PC Innards - 2013 Edition - Who's Going to See It Anyway?"

Don't plan on keeping the 580's around as backup cards anymore? Those Titans must be the bee's knees.

I have made peace with my decision! Also they don't play nice with my ft02 and I don't plan to leave this case for a long while.

Great cards though

We were tossing around the idea of combining this with a Race Your PC thread.

It's a *lot* of work to keep the OP consistently updated. Moreso than this thread even. I also needed new graphics to do it up right.

Has anyone got the Asus VG248QE? I'm in 2 minds if I should get it. Do I go for a higher refresh rate and quick response time or a higher resolution. I have 2 monitors at the moment one is a LCD montior but I'm using a LED Monitor TV.

I've been able to compare the response times with one being 4ms and the other 8ms apart from that they are both 24" 60hz and 1080p. Only reason I'm using the LED is due to it having speakers.

I've noticed when playing games like FIFA that the monitor I use now has alot of ghosting on the ball while the old one has rarely none. Also racing games look much sharper at high speeds.

I think I would be fine with 1080p and have smoother gameplay. I'm just wondering will 1440p/120hz displays be released and if so how long down the line? Are there ant other monitors I should check out? I've read quite alot about Benq.

Just got one the other day dematted and it works nicely. People trump up the response times but after using lightboost in a few games the lack of motionblur compared to any other flat panel I use is simply untouched by anything else out there.

BenQ sells monitors with the same tech and they do have better colors.

Quick question: When raising your resolution, is it the CPU or GPU that takes most of the increased load put on your system when running games?

I ask because in my current system my CPU is the main bottleneck and I'd like to know if that has a real effect on the performance difference between 1440 x 900 and 1080p.

I tried to hook this system up to a 1080p TV once (it's a 2.4GHz Q6600 with an HD6850, and before you ask I can't overclock it). I only tried out a few really taxing games, but performance wasn't dramatically lower in most cases. RAGE still ran just as smoothly as on my smaller computer monitor. The Witcher 2 also performed about the same (I always keep it locked at 30).

The only noticeable difference was in Crysis 2. On my smaller monitor I can play it smoothly with a few of the DX11 effects turned on. On the TV any DX11 effects put the game into slow motion, I had to turn everything down to DX9, but under the max possible DX9 settings Crysis 2 ran flawlessly.

Wouldn't it be easier to just do a Google doc so you won't have to constantly keep it updated yourself? There's been the Titan and now supposedly the 700 series about to release... Is the main hold up that youwanted to make the op look pretty? The pc porn would've taken care of that

But you know.... I did spend a fair amount of time on the xspc site yesterday... If only those 580s would sale! :p

Edit: just looked and the last one went up in Dec 2011. Long time in pc land. I think the heaven and valley benchmarks would be suitable. They're both free with no restrictions whereas the new 3d mark has the more stressful settings locked down doesn't it?

If you're really going to put a new thread up.
