Just realized I was using a DC7.5 volt adapter on my CMStorm keyboard instead of the 5 volt it asked for. The area around the arrow keys got very hot after 12 hours of being on. I unplugged it and all seems fine now. Do you think I may have damaged it?

Hey guys, I'm looking to upgrade my graphics card. I have a GeForce GTX 460. What card do you guys recommend? or do you guys think I'll be good with the 460 for awhile yet?

Thanks.

Now as someone who is looking to build an enthusiast level gaming PC this year but is in no rush to build at all at once how does has well and new nvidia gpu's affect motherboard purchases. Since I am unsure wether I would go haswell or new 7 series gpu are there motherboards that are in a sense futureproof? I just want to start collecting parts that are great deals but its hard to know whether I would block myself out of new hardware.

Hi Gaf,

Need some advice about upgrading my PC. As you can see its pretty old but has served me ok until the GTX 8800 i had in there died. I'm looking to upgrade GPU and/or CPU. I have a budget of about £100.

What i'm unsure about is should I just go for a gpu like the GT7790? Or due to the slow processor it would be better to upgrade the cpu and gpu to something like a used Q6600 (£40) and whatever best card i can get for £60?

I mainly play Civ5, Sins, Xcom, Dayz. I would love to play Skyrim/ BF3 on medium settings (40fps?).

Im from the UK btw.

Thanks

My Current Specs:

Intel Dual Core E2200 (lga775)
Motherboard (unknown)
3 GB DDR3 Ram
HD 5450 DDR2 :(
Tagan 550w Modular

LOL basically.

Arc Midi R2 is $70 on Newegg with free shipping. Promo code: EMCXRVW45

All of these Corsair PSUs are on sale for 15% off or more. Promo code: EMCXRVW246

Samsung 840 500GB for $320. Promo code: EMCXRVW23

Ooo good eye! Makes me want to forget about the NZXT 820 case and go with the Arc Midi R2 again xD

This recently went live, some pretty solid information.

That's pretty subjective, and you can determine when you want more performance. A solid upgrade from that would be something like a 660Ti or 760Ti (when it releases) which would be a little more than double the performance of your 460.

You need to wait until the new processors are out because they are on a new socket. Intel does two series of processors on the same socket, then releases a new socket. It's their strategy for about 5 releases now.

Lol...

I'm so weak.

I'm weak I tell ya! Buying shit for a new computer/build is too much fun - and I want it to be perfect.

I'm going 2011 Socket!

Just snagged this:

The ST is PCI interface, and the motherboard you have doesn't have PCI slots. Only PCI-E. You'll want the Xonar STX instead.

The AX860 is known for having issues with coil whine. I'd step that down to a 760, as that'd be enough for dual Titans anyway.

I was actually really impressed with the BlackShark headset. Normally I'd scoff at a Razer product, but it was built pretty well. Please share feedback on that.

ooo I see, thanks. STX it is!

Alright, swapped it for a 760

Will do!

lol yea, I accidentally pressed submit and then couldn't edit it due to the down time.

Alright thanks!

Any other recommendations? Would the airflow be alright if I went with the Fractal case? I like the Phantom case because it is huge and has alot of fans. But I probably would have to go with a 1000W psu for all the fans and future sli titan

Haha, fuck you guys so hard. :p

I got a killer deal on the Titan; as much as I'd love to splurge even more, that's all my budget can handle. Besides, a very big reason I'm going with one is that I'm not falling in love with my SLI'd 670s.

Your case has a window right? Windows are designed for viewing. You are assembling some high end parts that are gonna make sweet pc porn when assembled. The second Titan is all that will be missing from the love scene.

True, that motherboard is just wasted space without a second one.

Yeah, Arc Midi R2 is a great case. Fans don't actually use up very much power at all though.

Yeah, I'm actually putting up a 690 I think. I need this so fucking bad my entire body hurts. Would totally finish my build.

The good news is that Titan blocks should fit the 780. So I might go 780 instead of Titan. We'll see though.

That's beautiful! I love the looks of it - but I just don't think it would match the aesthetic I'm trying to achieve. I just want a simple black block and a nice solid black backplate. I gotta cool it on the pickups until I get my 670s sold.

Looks like Microcenter has the 3820 for $229. Great deal, and what I plan to get. Unfortunately, though, they don't have any instock and it's in-store only. I'll run to my local store tomorrow and see when they plan on getting more in - hopefully soon.

**

We all agree 16GB is more than enough RAM nowadays, correct? There's that devil on my shoulder telling me to go with 32GBs, but I just can't justify it - and that's probably for the best.

Gonna pull the trigger on this tomorrow, most likely:

Need some overclocking help here.

I'm on an aging i5-750, stock was 2.67 GHz, so I just bought myself a Coolermaster 212+ heatsink and went to town.

Right now I can get to 3.5 GHz, but as soon as I hit 3.6GHz I get a BSoD. I raised the CPU voltage a notch and IntelBurn gave me an instability error. Raised another notch to 1.3V and I get another instability error.

Don't get me wrong, 3.5 up from 2.6 is fantastic, but I've seen a ton of people get their i5-750s to 3.8 or even 4.0GHz, so I don't think I've maxed out this thing yet. What exactly should I do once I get instability errors? No problems whatsoever with temperatures, even at 3.6 the temperature never budged past 61 degrees C.

I have the same CPU and run it @ 4ghz constantly and stable. I have a gigabyte p55m-ud4 though, which was gigabytes best mATX board at the time and has great vrm cooling and all that shit. I run just under 1.3V.

Make sure you have your FSB capped at 100mhz, latest mobo bios, turn off turbo, might want to let your mobo auto set your voltages at first to see what it thinks it needs and then scale back later. If you have a crappy mobo then that might be the reason or u might have a chip that doesn't do well oc wise

By the way: If you're going with an EK block don't get one that's nickel plated, corrosion will eat it alive (not sure if you're planning to do this, but just in case).

1) Stop using IBT
2) Luck of draw, etc, etc. I had an old E7xxx chip that would not budge over 3.2 and had a giant FSB hole, when mine could hit 4.0

I'd check over your OC settings, so you can fine tune a bit (See above). In general if you can't force the clocks through voltage (imo) there isn't that much headroom left.

32GB means I think you are dumb, or you prove you are running 3 VMs while rendering.

Whew! Been looking to get a new PC for a while now and spent the last few days throwing together a list for one. Went ahead and used your guide in the OP, Hazaro, since I am a huge noob when it comes to most of this stuff (was aiming for the excellent "Excellent" build. I don't mind spending between 1000-1500 CAD, but not much more than that). I'm planning on having NCIX actually build it (don't laugh!) and here's what I have picked out:

------

NCIX Bundle Deal ASRock Z77 EXTREME4 Motherboard & Intel Core i5 3570K Unlocked Quad Core Processor

ASUS GeForce GTX 660 Ti DirectCU OC 1058MHZ 2GB 6GHZ GDDR5 2xDVI HDMI DisplayPort PCI

Western Digital Green 2TB SATA3 6GB/S Intellipower 64MB Cache 3.5in Internal Hard Drive HDD

Crucial M4 CT128M4SSD2 2.5in 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Antec Basiq BP550 Plus 550W 24PIN ATX 12V V2.2 80PLUS Modular Active PFC Power Supply

Bitfenix Shinobi ATX Mid Tower Case Black 3X5.25EXT 8X3.5INT No PS Top USB3.0 Audio

ASUS DRW-24B1ST 24X SATA DVD Writer OEM Black

Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus Direct Touch 4 Heatpipe Heatsink AM2 AM3 LGA1366 LGA1155 LGA1156 120mm

Corsair Vengeance CML8GX3M2A1600C9 Lowprofile 8GB 2X4GB DDR3-1600 CL9-9-9-24 Dual Channel Memory Kit

BenQ GL2450HM 24IN 1920x1080 2MS HDMI Major League Gaming PRO-CIRCUIT Console LED Monitor (this one is at a bit of a deal with assembly. Been using a 17" for ages!)

------

That's about it since I just bought a new mouse recently and my G15 keyboard is also fine for the time being.

Prices on most things seem decent right now when checked across multiple retailers, and I've got a few items set up to price match (hopefully they go through).

Any thoughts? Hopefully someone can take quick a look and see if I've made any glaring compatibility mistakes!

Ditch CPU and Mobo and wait 10 days for new Intel chips.
Look at 7950/7970 for better value (660Ti still a great card). Maybe GTX770 will have a good bundle (HAHAHAHA, no)
840 Pro should be around same price and better than the M4.

Thanks, exactly what I was looking for. I'll wait for the new stuff to come out before I do anything then. Not sure what the ramifications are, exactly, but I'll hang around here when the time comes.

It'll it all depends on what you can spend, you can go from £50 for average boards to £160 for top ones. More you spend the more likely you'll be able to get a better OC out of your 955.

Haswell is coming soon if you want to start again from scratch but you'd be talking spending about £360 or so for an i5 and a good mobo.
