Ok. My Japanese Correspondent has checked in. Sadly the chocolate brown one is not available (so far). But he did sent me a list of what he can find. I'm leaning towards one of these few. Let me know what you think.

I'm leaning towards the first one because giraffes are awesome, or the last one because it is designed for taking a radiator (and I like the higher mounting of the motherboard)

OS question-

is windows 8 ok for gaming? or is windows 7 64bit still the way to go?

What are the pros and cons between windows 7 and 8? Can 8 run in "legacy" mode? i saw that UI and shuddered :/

Windows 8 is awkward, but you get used to it. After 8.1 this summer it should fix everything people have a problem with. Game performance should be the same

If the last one doesn't have those checkerboxes anywhere on it, then I'd vote for that one. After about a month I think I'd get tired of looking at the giraffe print.

Building a friends new gaming PC yesterday and today, all new components. The OS keeps on BSOD'ing after around 2 minutes of use, giving different errors such as MEMORY_MANAGEMENT and KERNAL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR.

Tried recabling everything, the memory tests came back fine, tried installing the OS of the HHD and SSD and using Windows 7 and 8. Really have no idea what the issue is, all we can think of is that the motherboard is borked or something.

It's not just about stutter with frame time testing though. I'll give you an example that I ran myself.

Here we have the avg/min/max of 4 runs each on steppings of 200Mhz with a 3570K and 7970:

That's barely an appreciable difference, right?

Now we look at 99th percentile stats for the exact same runs:

That's a difference of over 20 frames per second. That's not felt in just stutter, but in increased response time/decreased input lag, less chug, and smoother illusion of motion.

I'm going to put this bluntly. Deciding not to use frame time testing, whether that be through FCAT, Fraps, or both, is going to be due to one of two things. One, laziness, as it takes a lot more time to put the data together. The other is plain ignorance on behalf of the tester not understanding what frame time testing is all about. If it's the former, shame on them. If it's the latter, shame on them for not doing their research. This is a website dedicated to giving out solid consumer advice. They need to keep up with the times or be ignored.

You have choices with Tech Report and PCPer of getting much much more in depth reviews that give consumers a completely accurate picture of performance. There's no reason to give clicks to someone who decides to give less accurate information that has been proven to be completely unreliable.

I dunno. 99th percentile is somewhat cool, but it's not super useful. There's a reason you don't see it used a whole lot in general. I like what Tom's Hardware is doing with variance better. Of course, what I'd really like to see is a histogram distribution of frame latencies with standard deviation/variation also given. This is basic statistics stuff, but it provides a ton of useful information including the worst case scenario stuff that 99th percentile gives you.

The checkerbox one and the last one are different cases. I'm leaning towards the last one as well. It's also available in black.

How important is the CPU nowadays when it comes to PC performance? I put together a rig with a i5 3570k and oc'ed it to 4.3ghz, along with 8 gigs of ram at 1600mhz and a radeon 7950. When the time comes, will exchanging the 7950 be enough keep up in the "ultra" settings race, now that we know that the ps4 and xbone have 8-core processors?

So I am considering building a PC. I have never built one before and I wanted to ask here what you guys thought.

My main issue is that it needs to be good for games AND video editing. I was originally just going to buy a mac because the priority is for video editing and I know I can buy a prebuilt machine from them that will work well for that. I also have wanted to get into PC gaming for a while though and I decided to explore the possibility of a custom PC that would be amazing for both.

If I go this route I want something that will be absolutely amazing for games as well as video editing. Money is not too much of an issue. I'm willing to spend a couple thousand on a machine.

Hey guys - total noob here, and I'm looking to build a new PC sometime after I move and have space for it in a spare room (den/office).

I'm using the resources in the (excellent) OP as an initial guide, but have two questions to start:

* What would be the ideal timing to buy everything? I'm thinking ideally this would be in October or thereabouts, but I don't NEED to buy it then. I don't know about the typical seasons for new cards and boards and stuff (though reading the thread it looks like some new stuff is about to come out). I'm not buying top of the line stuff, so just looking for ideal price timing for the kind of build I'm looking at.

* I am thinking my budget will be somewhere around $1200 all in (including monitor/case/keyboard), so maybe somewhere around the "Enhanced" sub-build on Hazaro's Build Sheet. By the time I buy I realize new stuff will be available and prices will be different. With that in mind, would a $1200 all-in budget afford a PC that will best the next gen consoles? That's my main goal here. If I can't afford a PC that will run stuff better than a PS4 I might just wait until I can.

Primary use will be gaming and normal work stuff, but I'll also use the machine for heavy Excel modeling (very large models with VBA and macros), light video editing, and as a second HTPC for the den. I may also skip the monitor and just hook it up to the den TV, although at first that would just be a 2007-ish 40" Samsung 720p LCD HDTV. Eventually I'd upgrade to something better (main HDTV will be in the living room, where this PC likely won't be allowed). Because the TV is not ideal, and trying to do work on it would basically be impossible, I'm leaning towards getting a monitor. Using the TV would just save a few bucks at the beginning.

I haven't touched the inside of a PC since I installed a Voodoo 2 in my dad's Gateway (which I overclocked - epic) in the late 90's, so looking forward to this!

Personally, I'd look at the AS 220HTR, Smart 520T, Acubic E50, or Acubic M30. Any one of those would be amazing in it's own right, but I am especially enamored with the M30.

The 2.5GB one? I'm no picky. I'd sell it for $190.
The problem is for $190 someone could just get a 660 for the same price that uses less power, is slightly faster, quieter and have a warranty.

Good card, just a tough sale at that price. But you might get lucky.

Mkenyon - Doing microATX for socket 2011. Not ITX :( which is too bad. The cases are great.

Well then definitely the 220HTR.

So pretty.

October/November when the new AMD cards release will be an excellent time to buy. We should also have Ivy-E by then, which will be interesting to see how it is.

The specs on a $1200 machine built then will handily outperform/outspec next gen consoles.
Anyone here thinks an X6 1100t will bottleneck a 780GTX? first i thought about upgrading my whole system to haswell, with a 7970 or something. but i could use those funds to keep what i have now (1100t @3.3ghz, 8gb ram) and go for a faster GPU. Im not sure what is wise to get the best performance in games.
Whole system is a better bet. The 1100T will bottleneck in a large number of games.
So going from a 580-780 would be a pretty big jump I guess? I have a 2500k, that wouldn't cause a bottleneck I would think?
Game at 1080p
Depends on the frequency the processor is running at, and the game in question. Bottlenecks aren't an either/or thing. They exist on multiple parts at once, and often have more to do with the game engine than specific hardware.

Short answer: No, especially if it's clocked at 4.5ish.

Is that really likely? I strongly doubt 20nm will be ready by then.

Excellent - thanks! New baby arrives in September so November is probably more likely than October...

That said, when I add all the shit I need (monitor, keyboard, mouse, OS) I'm pushing something like $1400 on Hazaro's "Enhanced" build (w/ the GTX 670).

Maybe by November the same build will be cheaper. I might also cut out the mechanical HD and go with a 128GB SSD. I keep all my media on a networked drive anyway so I should be fine with that amount. Can always upgrade later if I need to.

This is something I battle with Hazaro and Scogoth on. I think this should be standard for everyone, so I heartily endorse this decision.

Pay attention to the board and what it supports and what your plans are. For example if you plan on going either SLI or Crossfire then the first mobo is fine, the second however only supports Crossfire.

Also are you going to overclock the processor?

That MSI board also wasn't rated view well, is anything from MSI ever?

Thanks for the help. I was not aware what those two things were, I was getting help from a friend that thought I had made up my mind on AMD. So there was confusion. This is my first rig.

I think I'm good now. If you're interested, this is what I have. It's somewhat based on Enthusiasts Little Extra. http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=17086689

I just removed a SSD for the OS simply for budget concerns, and added back the heatsink.

So i'm looking to finally get a gaming PC, but I'm looking for one pre-built (I understand that its cheaper to do it yourself but i'm not really computer savvy and i'm too lazy to learn lol). I was wondering what a good one is to go for that can max out current games and is future proof. Been looking on Dell's site and the Aurora is looking good (around £1200 is not a bad price for me) however i've seen people mention the X51, is that future proof (i'm guessing not due to the size of the chassis.).

Also how much more am I looking at if I was gonna go 3D or touch screen monitors?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, if it helps im in the uk.

I believe my brother had a similar problem with his build. For him it was his processor which he had replaced and that solved it. You may have to look at the CPU or mobo at this point I believe.

Sure you don't want to learn :p?

Depends what you feel is acceptable, for some Titan is not future proof, because it will become a lesser card soon. However a 670/7970/680/780 will keep you gaming for a several years comfortably.

If you really want prebuilt, Overclockers and Scan seem to do some decent ones with decent parts that I would go for in that price range. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=43&catid=2475&subid=2486

They build if for you once you order.

The price doesn't seem outrageous either. Wait 2 weeks though, they should have builds with Haswell CPUs up soon.

I'm not sure if I will since I am a beginner right now. But the more I toy with it after having it, I may want the option. The SSD is something I can do later for a performance difference that I might not really need for now, being bound to a laptop for years.

Good eye! But overclocking is foreign to me, so I'm not sure if I should. I'm also being recommended to whittle down to an I5 and raise my card to a 670, but that's a $100 increase.

So my quest for a new Monitor is drawing to a close.

I think I've pretty much narrowed down to the ASUS VG248QE.

But maaaaaaan, that BenQ XL2420T is tempting the SHIT out of me. It's so gorgeous. But that price.....

Any other recommendations before I finalize this?

As the owner of an XL2420, you want the ASUS.

That Asus is using a better panel right now. Benq is also using the same panel in another cheaper monitor, the xl2411, but it seems to only be for sale in euroland. May get a xl2421 with that same 144Hz panel someday, but who knows. That is just speculation on my part.
