If competition is good for the industry, why does everyone want Xbox to fail?

Negative people always say Xbox needs to shut down and become a game making company for Sony period…No laughing just Microsoft needs to quit
Xbox is already a zombie division. By the standard Economic theory the very existence of Xbox Division is an abomination and skewers the market away from efficiency. Xbox doesn't make money and would normally go away on its own, but it is artificially kept around and thus, stops anyone else from taking a crack at it. Xbox need to go because it has not earned the right to live.

Secret, all these companies want physical to die.
Yeah but while some are making shenanigans to accomplish it XBox celebrated a WWF show match broadcasted worldwide, with them making suplex to the physical media.

Because deep down, they don't actually want competition

They want comfort. They want Sony on top forever, feeding them sequels to the same over-the-shoulder dad-sims every few years while pretending the gaming world begins and ends with PlayStation Studios

That shiny green box isn't just hardware, it's a reminder that the old kings might not stay kings forever. And that terrifies them

Please tell me this is a joke.

Everyone will just move on from playstation if they continue to fuck up their first party how they have this gen.

But Jim is gone and I've found out Herman has been demoted. Thw new boss can hopefully fix it all and we get back to having awesome first party games at a regular clip.

I think it's the opposite. If Sony has no viable competitor they will still sell a ton of consoles for people to play Fortnite, GTA and CoD. There is a huge market for people who just want to plug a box into their TV. Most gamers are casual and don't want to bother with a PC. First party will be less important and they will probably double down on GaaS. With no competition might as well swing for the fences. Controlling and owning a big GaaS is far more profitable than selling 10-20M copies of a 300M budget single player game.

You can see this in action with Valve. No competition so they just spit polish their store software and make GaaS. Counter Strike and Dota make them more money than a bunch of L4D or Half Lifes would.

How are they competition when they are putting their software on other consoles that are of the same price range and also offer their own content along with it.

This has been coming for years, unfortunately too many would rather feel they are pals with the executive teams and receive invite events/free hardware and software than tell the truth.

They could and should have been a brilliant competitor to PlayStation.

Too many stayed quiet for their own benefits. How do you improve and have consistent compelling products if you are told you can do no wrong when that is far from the truth.

1 - Being the most powerful company in the world and winning by buying everything.
2 - Xbox gamers are by far the most toxic on social media.

Competition is healthy; it's a shame only Sony remains for the adult audience and Nintendo for children.

Who wants to see incompetent people / companies succeed?
It's all Microsoft's doing. There are no "bad" people wanting Xbox to fail.

Competition is good and needed but Microsoft/Xbox has just brought toxicity for over a decade at this point.

1.They're the only brand with a network of paid shills installed on socials and in the press receiving marching orders to spin whatever they do as a brilliant plan and exactly the kind of future consumers want (until proven wrong like with Gamepass "pie_tears_joy:)
2.They do active FUD and fake shitstorm campaigns against the competition.
3.They've created a group of cultists incapable of any rational judgement against them with whom the management interacts on socials to foster them.
4. They have tried to out spend competitors out of market by acquiring publishers taking advantage of their financial position, too bad that even this backfired spectacularly for Phil and the Xbox management because Microsoft's CEO had another plan in mind.

At this point they can just be a third party multiplatform publisher and f* off for me.

Nobody wanted Xbox to fail. The 360 was pretty much neck and neck with PS3 sales. Microsoft had a great console with fantastic exclusives.

They then dropped the ball with the Xbox One. More people decided to buy the PS4. The rest is history.

What do you expect people to do? Buy Microsoft hardware out of obligation? Because they gave us Xbox Live, I'm supposed to thank them by forever buying their hardware? Lol. No.

The iPhone funeral they made just shows their attitude and approach to everything.
I want that kind of approach far away from anything I like!

I don't know how anyone can look at that list and say with a straight face they are happy with Sony first party this gen.

They need more stuff like Returnal, Astrobot and Death Stranding 2 pronto.

It's only a vocal minority. Every time a poll is made here most of us, Sony fans, vote PS5 as a train wreck.

Let the past die, bury it if you have to.
*crack on

It's already happening, they are geniuses, when Dreamcast died they predicted the evolution of ARM cores for gaming purposes which led them to the 32-core Sakura project. The return was frustrated for several reasons , one of them the aggressive presence of MS. Wait 5 to 12 months and you will see.

It's, by far, the most boring console Sony has ever made.
To me it's the true Ps4 pro, it has no gen defining feature (a tiny sprinkle of RT is not enough to make it a new gen for me).

Outside of maybe Capcom no one has shined this generation.

Covid did a number on everyone.

It's wild to see so many of those kinds of posts over the last 48 hours and Sony / Nintendo are holding your saves hostage behind an online sub / PS5 pro with no disk drive.

Secret, all these companies want physical to die.

Anyway, Xbox has done and made some stupid ass decisions but they are not exclusively doing that kind of stuff. They are all guilty of it.
Nonsense, at least both Switch and PS5 Pro have an option for physical media. Xbox Series S doesn't and they even started to push Series X with no drive. Then they went on to buy a bunch of publishers and make their games digital only, on xbox. Why? Because MS pushed the death of physical on their platform. Nintendo and Sony haven't. They give you that option.

During the X360 / PS3 era that competition was needed and it even forced Playstation to adapt their strategy drastically.
This Xbox exists no more unfortunately.
Now they just attach their name to whatever will give them a little money and that's all.

All 3 companies would get rid of physical media if they could. Its just a matter of time.

I don't want Xbox to fail, but since buying all these studios Microsoft are in charge of a hell of a lot of PC gaming now and the quality of games they are releasing are not good enough to buy and own, so it's not just about Xbox, i want both to have really good games but it isn't happening.

I would say Sega has done quite well as well Konami thus far with Silent Hill, but all this shows there's decent headway from the Asia region by how they have stuck to their stronger points. To me it seems America and some of EMEA regions have not done as strong and having to learn the harder way for the future.

MS's Xbox is an American company and we need to keep jobs here in the US. For some reason everyone here wants MS to fail and make PS the only player in the console market. This would be extremely bad for everyone.

Also, Xbox gave us Xbox Live, GamePass and Halo. Without those, who knows where we would be.

Competition for a good and we need to buy Xbox products.
Competition is not about keeping shitty companies around so they can pretend that there is a crowd
Competition is about killing shitty companies so good product take their place

MS proposition is bad and toxic - it's only natural they phased out of market. Someone else will take their place eventually - PC, mobile, streaming or something else that can propose better value

Competition is good for consumers. Lack of competition is good for businesses. Paying more for less is going to be the concern if anything.

Not really, no. What makes you believe that PS or Nintendo couldn't release a console without a drive/cart option or release games as digital only? There is no "if they could" about it. They choose to keep that option and the matter of time is up to the user. I don't know why people make excuses for MS/xbox.

Why am I making excuses for Xbox exactly?

The latest Playstation does not come with a drive as standard and you can bet the next one won't either. Tells you all you need to know.

Nintendo just launched a new console with a physical card slot so for at least the next decade Nintendo isn't getting rid of physical media

Sony released the refreshed PS5 Slim and the Pro with an optional add-on disc drive and the drive was so popular it was sold out and being scalped for almost the entire first year of this option. Sony will take the hint here, they won't be getting rid of physical media anytime soon either

Ok? Doesn't go against anything I said in the post you quoted. If they could get rid of it they would.

Because you're trying to say that others want to do the same but for some reason can't. What privilege do you think xbox has vs the others exactly?

You can get a drive for any recent PS5 as an option meaning those who want physical can buy the drive and those who don't don't pay for the drive in the hardware cost. You have options on PS/Nintendo and when you do get it PS/Nintendo games are available on physical media. On xbox this isn't the case. Not only do the Series S and new X have no option for physical but even those who previously bought an xbox with a drive can't get the recent games physical because xbox as a publisher seems to have stopped releasing their games on disc. MS is forcing it, the others give options.

Tribalism

That's it. It's the same reason why people have been wishing for PlayStation and Nintendo to fail for years. The difference is that Xbox is the easy one to latch onto right now as they aren't in a good spot so they have something tangible to back up their bullshit.

Xbox failing isn't good for anyone and a console market without Xbox is worse for everyone. Anybody wishing for Xbox to fail is a fucking idiot.

All 3 companies would get rid of physical media if they could. Its just a matter of time.
This isn't unique to consoles or video games in general. PC gaming hasn't had mainstream physical in like 2 decades. Physical will disappear from all media.

You know when you have a friend or loved one who keeps fucking up and deep down you want them to succeed but also youre tired of their shit and all the pain they cause you?

Its kinda like scheduenfraude. And I'm happy for Ms now; it seems like they are turning the corner.

I'm saying that they can't because there is still a decent amount of consumers in both those eco systems that expect physical media. If say 80% of software sales were digital, which will happen over time, then they would stop producing physical media in a heart beat. Why do you think you don't get a drive with the pro? They are trying to move everyone in that direction.

I'm not sure why you are trying to frame me as some sort of xbox apologist. I really couldn't give 2 fucks about them.

Many markets end up with way, remember all the old phone operating systems like Symbian, PalmOS, BlackBerryOS and Windows Phone? Now we have just 2, and no one's going to disrupt that, it's just too late.
Huawei's Harmony OS, maybe. Some important markets are cautious or have banned stuff from them, hence they developed the OS, but China alone is probably a big enough market to allow them growth. And if I can believe the first internet results, they are already around apple's market share in China.

I guess it is too late for some small business even if they have a neat idea to compete, so another Nintendo or Sega won't happen, and Amazon, Google probably buried their gaming plans already, Meta is doing some crap for Quest but that is burning money rather than actually establishing a gaming platform. I guess Samsung or Nvidia might be big enough to build something, though Nvidia seems to not actually care about gaming much right now. Samsung might want to if chinese phones erode their market share. Also Apple could expand in that direction if they really want to. And I'd say you can't rule out that Tencent enters the hw business. Certainly harder than earlier, but not entirely impossible for huge companies that have deep pockets and in some cases tons of money to burn before they expect or require a return of invest.

The reason that a decent amount exists though is because they don't force their users into it by not giving them that option.

The reason the Pro doesn't come with a drive as standard but still supports it is because of the price/profit goals. i.e trying to keep the price down for those who may not want a drive while maintaining that option still. not because they want to get rid of physical, if they wanted to get rid of it they simply wouldn't give you the option. Look at the stupid $730 Series X price for example for weaker hardware with a drive and the same storage. They wanted a price as low as possible. The fact that a PS5 Pro is $700 and a less capable Series X $730 is a great indication of that.
It would be like saying xbox wanted to get rid of HDDs because the 360 had it as an option and not standard.

Xbox on the other hand has done everything to destroy physical media. From not giving options for a drive for their hardware, to releasing unplayable discs (without download), to now just simply not releasing a physical version of their games.

Truth

Because people are brand loyalists to a fault same with say Apple etc, people actually think these big corporations give a shit about them. Spoiler none of them do, they only care about money.

Its less for me wanting Xbox to fail, but more about concern what about what would happen were MS to succeed in dominating the industry.

Their pursuit of the bottom line has a bad habit of leaving a trail of wreckage in its wake.
