JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders Episode 1:

Ah yes, one of the main events of the Spring 2014 has arrived and it feels good to have Jojo back on the air. That being said, there really isn't much to say about this episode since it does waht a lot of first episodes do, provide a shitton of exposition and backstory. We certainty got our fill of that as it is the dawn of a new age
it is the dawn of the stands and the learning of the revival of Dio and his blood connections to the Jojo dynasty..
Anyway, so this look pretty much like it did last season, although it seems they learned a few CGI dynamic camera tricks that were kind of neat. Now that we have gotten started I look forward to a less fill in the audience experience next episode.

No opening and ending makes me a sad panda.

Based Crunchyroll is airing the series in 1080p though. So that eases my pain a bit.

Jotaro is the best kind of badass too - he's not a clown like Joseph was but he's still really fun to have on screen.

Overall, this is a world apart from the "yeah, you should really skip the opening two episodes" that the first seasons has.

(Stand info - a name - not in first episode below, be warned)
I also was totally unaware that Hermit Purple has the ability to take pictures of Dio. Joseph really should have carried on with the whole Hamon stuff, his stand would probably be a bit better if he did...

Also I need to go watch the original OVAs again.

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders - Episode 1

The Joestar family has a way of stealing the limelight regardless of whichever generation it is and where they are. I LOL'd when the policeman complimented Holly's Japanese - a comment that only makes sense if the overall narrative was actually in the language that it makes sense to be in, English. Jotaro and Holly's relationship is also super weird. My Mom would straight up punch me in the face if I ever spoke to her like that. Also boy did Joesph pull the short straw when it comes to stands, I just pray he doesn't spend the entire series jobbing or something. It was super fun to have him back though :) I gotta say I'm impressed that the animation was actually respectable and dynamic more often than not - I'm just hoping the production values don't drop through the course of the show. All in all a great 1st episode :)

Jotaro > Joesph? That seems to be a rare opinion from what I've seen others say. I don't know too much about Jotaro but just from each protagonists respective intro episodes, Joesph > Jotaro. IMO of course and again, I only know bits & pieces of the Stardust Crusaders narrative.

Bwa ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

I love both Joseph and Jotaro but IMO Jotaro is just that bit more awesome. His hat is merged with his hair. He has a massive chain hanging from his coat. He has two belts.
And his fight with Dio at the end is one of my all-time great sequences, at least in the OVA.

Being careful with spoilers here, I am so hyped for this show though. Stardust Crusaders is AWESOME.

Jotaro works well because he always has a fun cast around him. He'd probably be kinda annoying if he was a single protagonist like Jonathan or Joseph.

I wouldn't say Jonathan is a solo protag though, as he has a small cast around him. He is 100% straight-laced and he's probably the worst protag of the series. And Joseph has Caesar and Lisa Lisa.

Sunlight Yellow Overdrive is awesome though and he's really well done in All Star Battle.

I think it's off to a pretty good start so far. The action is pretty good, and in terms of direction and pace, I think it does quite a few things better than the OVA did for the same material. Of course, the comparison isn't going to be so tough for the first half of the series at least, since that was actually the second set of OVAs they made just for the sake of having the "complete" story animated. The best animation showcases were all in the first set of OVAs which covers the second half of the story. By the time it gets to that point, it would probably be better not to compare production values at all, lol.

It wouldn't really be fair anyway because, well, OVA vs TV. Also, I mean, Mitsuo freaking Iso.

lol the beginning was hilarious.

"Shut the hell up! You're so annoying, you damn bitch!" "Okay!"

"He's listening to a boombox and reading Shonen Jump!"

Great episode. A lot was covered. Dio's hair was fabulous. And Joseph is still a badass.

Now to wait for next week... :x

Also said about no opening or ending. We'll hopefully have that next week though. Good first episode though with a lot of info dump that needed to be taken care of.

Was there any explanation for why Jotaro suddenly got all disrespectful of his mom? I honestly can't recall if there was or if it was just some random thing. Unless her memories are simply very idealized.

Jotaro is just that way, not just with his mom.
He does get "better" later, but most of his personality in Part 3 is one-liners.

Oh yes, impressions! This was a pretty good first episode. As always, the people working on this series really seem to understand tone of the source material and they're happy to embrace it on every account. Unusually for David Production the animation and choreography for the action scenes was actually pretty good, but this is a first episode so I'm not going to get too excited.

So we're certainly off to a good start and we seem to be moving at a solid pace. Roll on next week.

yeah, even Phantom Blood had that decent boxing scene in the first episode, so i'm not going to expect the animation to be this consistent in Stardust Crusaders either

Not in a world where Giorno exists. Jonathan and Jotaro have some of the less interesting personalities among JoJos in the series, but at least they have personalities.

I'm gonna guess his "angsty teen" phase hit late. Holly's just humoring him so he feels tough.

DAT JOJO
I was so taken back by Jotaro calling his own mother a bitch I couldnt help but laugh.

Made a new CR account just so I could use the free trial and watch this. Was not disappointed.

Her reaction made it that much better. Like it was just normal for them. lol

Just watched the first episode after having just had a Jojo part 1/2 marathon

It's pretty cool so far, I'm not sure if I like Jotaro better than Joseph yet

Not much else to say other than though, I'm kind of tired of having watched so many episodes in row lol

Jotaro grows on you. I still think Joseph is better than him, but Jotaro definitely shines in many points during the series.

He's totally an asshole that you don't want to like, but you end up doing so anyway because he's crazy.

I wonder if Joseph will use his season two powers. Because Joseph was so much fun to watch...not liking Jotaro's need to call his mom bitch....

It'd be really fun if he correctly guessed what someone else was going to say before they said it, at least once.

I really can't disassociate the concept of "Stand" from a "Persona" since I was familiar with the Persona series before Jojo's.

It's okay, just think of them as Personas.

And Personas were directly inspired by Stands so that mental association is no coincidence.

As long as you know which predates which. I also see them as extremely similar concepts. Fighting with psychic projections is fucking badass. Just finished Part IV today, don't miss Hamon one bit.

Almost forgot JoJo dropped today, my fridays have become even sweeter! I know what I'm doing when I get back from Captain America.

Heh, the similarities between Persona 4 and Part 4: Diamond is Unbreakable are even crazier.

These similarities are why I fucking loved Diamond is Unbreakable. I think I can safely say, that Josuke is my favorite JoJo currently.

Crunchyroll experience for this was rather shocking, the intro water scene was pretty bad though seemed to set the stage for how the rest of the episode would be. Really uninteresting and slow start combined with difficult to believe and accept ability systems. It seemed to jump on the spirit animals craze and used it in weird ways, well like the gifs above with the fire but then the cops cant see it? What is the point of the fire then?

Jotaru comes across as unlikeable and rude and really needs much work to be more likeable and interesting. I hope he gets a friend or something to help pull out his best points. The belts is a good part of his design, but the personality needs works. Unlike Joseph who could really carry things and was even more enhanced perfectly matched with Caasar, Jotaru really just has nothing going on for him.

Jotaro needs to treat his mom with some respect! I still love Joseph and I can't wait to see episode 2. Joseph may not have the best Stand, but he has the Ripples which I would rather have.

I always thought the Evokers from P3 were a pretty blatant reference to Jotaro shooting himself here- both involve a supposed "suicide" which causes the spirit to appear.

The imagery is pretty similar....

Did Avdol say he had his stand power from birth in the manga too?

Could've swore he got his stand power a bit after Dio visited him.

Didn't think about that when I was seeing it, but that's pretty good. The characters are doing Jojo's poses in Persona Q, so the devs clearly know what they're doing.

The hype is real. Kind of disappointed there was no intro or outro this week. But if they gotta get the story told I'm not gonna complain.

Loved the episode, beautiful animation especially in the stand confrontation. Can't wait for more... especially whatever the opening turns out to be.

Stardust Crusaders was serialized in 1989...

The cops can't see the Stands because they're plebians. Only special people like the Joestars and Avdol can see them, but people around them can feel the effects.

I just remembered, what happened to this prisoners inside the cell Jotaro was in? :x Did they get barbecued?
