Kotaku Rumor: Microsoft 6 months behind in game production for X720 [Pastebin = Ban]

In a little over 2 weeks, all this bickering is going to become exponentially worse. Depending on how much information MS actually will provide at their event, we should have a better picture of everything.

All people have been doing up until now is speculate on rumors. Just wait it out. Soon, gaf will turn back to normal.

Yeah, it's always the same, every new beginning of a new generation... You can smell the smell of napalm coming into this threads.. :)

Microsoft has always put easy development first though. This isn't something new for them, it's an existing culture.

Sony has been boasting about it in comparison because they've needed to after the previous two generations. They're playing catch-up with MS in this area. And, of course, because they've actually announced their console. So they've got something they can actually talk about.

Microsoft is the reason why Sony is making the PS4 so developer friendly in comparison to their previous consoles.

I'd have to agree. Everyone seems to be applauding Sony for making a developer friendly system. Instead what people should be saying is it's about bloody time.

It's like a bunch of kids crying because their ice-cream cone is slightly smaller than the other kid next to them.

They did kinda dickish against sony after their event for not showing a console.

I really hope MS actually gives out some real tech specs and directly addresses the Always Online issue. If they just say 8 core CPU, 8Gb of RAM, and a custom AMD GPU it'll be really frustrating, as will talking around the Always Online DRM. Things will only get worse if that happens.

Thankfully once the gen actually gets going the System Wars will subside. That was one nice benefit of the long gen this time around. People eventually just dropped the system wars and focused on games.

Man it is depressing being in this thread.

I blame Microsoft. No matter whether all the bad rumors are true or not, they let them fester for too long without any damage control, to the point that even mainstream press regularly comments on them.

Has there ever been an upcoming console with so much negative hype before its reveal?

in that case (that is more likely what will happen) i hope games will show what the console is capable of

Then the kid with the smaller cone claims his has chocolate at the bottom and the other kid starts bitching.
Well maybe the smaller cone with chocolate is better. It's kind of nice to eat the ice cream to the bottom and realize their is special chocolate sauce. There is also the benifit that for a balanced diet the smaller cone would be better for less empty calories. The smaller cone might reach the same calorie count when you add the secret chocolate to the count. What is your stance on caramel?

I have a feeling that, no matter what the tech specs are, the games shown will be pretty impressive, perhaps even moreso than was was shown at Sony's conference. They've had several more months of polish, may be running on hardware closer to final, and may have been carefully chosen to counter what Sony showed. Whether or not that'll hold up in final releases is anyone's guess but I expect them to have a pretty good showing of visuals at the conference.

It's still in the 'press' though. People are talking about it. No need for damage control, if it's all rumors. They will resolve all that with a reveal.

And maybe the smaller cone leads to fewer brain-freezes. I like my ice cream with fewer bottlenecks.

Then again, maybe the bigger cone enables lower latency consumption.

they have had a few months to polish. I think the graphics through this next gen will be close or negligible in their difference.

Has there ever been an upcoming console with so much negative hype before its reveal?

From what I've heard, this is pretty normal for Xbox launches

The negative hype is mainly here and some blogs. The mainstream media is not so negative. The fact
Is in the grand scheme of things, this little bit of negative press won't matter after the 21st at the very least. After the e3 press conference, Microsoft will most likely garner most of the mainstream media. They are much better at marketing this to a wider audience. While it doesn't much matter to many of the members of this forum, come launch it will be a completely different story.

The Wii U was a mess right from the early showing of it. Confusing, hiding the specs., throwing in a Pro controller and calling it a day for 3rd party games.

I do agree that Microsoft really needs to come clean about the rumors on the 21st.

in one thread there is a rumor that it is 6 months behind schedule

then in another thread it says that it will be released in September alongside the next-gen version of GTA5

LOL, I can't wait for E3 so we can put rumors to rest, lol

The funny thing about the GTAV rumor is that it was just an article posted purely as speculation by a random site and was never claimed to be from any inside source, just an opinion the author had. People just ran with it and started saying it was a rumor.

gta is always delayed, i don't see why people are assuming it is for MS. Rockstar doesn't care about MS or anyone, they will release gta when they want to.

What do you expect? Every single bit of news/rumors for the Durango have been negative and it's taken a toll on it's public perception. People are real antsy right now. I think once the reveal is done, people will start having a positive attitude.

And no one is going to give a shit about rumors that turned out to be untrue. It's all just noise right now. Fun noise. But noise nonetheless.

It's not even that, it's the 'well I don't believe the rumors/MS can totally change the whole system to be better than Sony' pissing competition that's going on that is headache causing.

I don't know what to say to a response like this. Microsoft has their own timetable, objectives, and goals. NO one on NeoGAF is and should be aware of this and even if they did it is a rumor till proven. In fact, negative press only appears to be on this forum.

Their only confirmation of the damn thing has been a countdown timer. All these amateur fanboy pieces are the issue. Don't read into them. Consider them what they are. Uninformed shit. Then wait a few more weeks and begin to form your own opinion.

I really thought this forum had matured since the last console launches. I see that is not true now.

No, it'll just be the new "rrod, paywall, adddddddddddddddddddddddddddddds!"

I'm really curious to see how many of these rumors pan out. IT would be pretty damn hard to imagine the next Xbox NOT being always on given how much postulating and prediction we've seen for it.

It is the only thing I feel confident will be part of the next system in the hundreds of rumors. Why? Because of the subsidized model.

Sad but true. I'll be thrilled if the negative rumors aren't true, but everyone knows very well that posters will still come into Xbox threads crying about ads, and XBLGold. You can even predict some of the posters, too.

Don't forget the "meh, 50% more GPU flops won't matter anyway because of similiar architecture".

Good or bad, the reveal will burn GAF to the ground.

Here's what bkilian, former Xbox 360/Durango audio engineer, said on the Beyond3d forums about always-online DRM:

bkilian said:
But let's get serious here for a second. They don't need always-online for DRM. The Steam model uses online activation, and doesn't require always online. So let's get it straight: always-online is not a DRM thing. You can lock down piracy perfectly well with one-time codes and online activation, which only requires a connection the first time you start a game. In fact, that would even work for not requiring the disc in the drive.

It is the only thing I feel confident will be part of the next system in the hundreds of rumors. Why? Because of the subsidized model.

The current subscription based 360s require you to connect to the internet once a month to verify that your payment is up to date. And if you haven't paid, it doesn't allow you to use the console. But you don't see them forcing this on every 360.

If MS really does go with always-online, it's going to be part of their "vision" for a cloud-centric experience.

Agreed, and I think that will inevitably happen with consoles in the future. But right now it would mean cutting out like half of their market. I can't imagine they would see the benefits outweighing the costs.

ok but as you can understand receiving the availability of netflix last autumn after a 7 years console cycle...didnt put the ps3 as a media device at least in country like mine ..and talking about netflix most of europe is in the italy situation ...i repeat xbox have apps to stream movies available in lots of countries..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360_applications

and as u can see ps3 cant be compared to xbox regard streaming tv and movies

...netflix is still more usa/canada oriented

i mean ok u received last autumn netflix (not a sony fault at all!) and xbox received the browser....but well was too late..

As was said before, most (all?) of those apps are behind a paywall on the 360. If the same applies for XB3, how are consumers going to react, if they can get pretty much the same for free on PS4 and Wii U?

I have no personal experience on using it, but I've heard that the PS3 Media Server would make the console even better streaming device than the 360. Dunno if that's true.

Yeah, Netflix isn't that popular in Europe due to its availability. It's kinda ironic that it's used more on the platform, that has sold less where Netflix is most popular.

I'm not so sure how it's Sony's fault, that Netflix arrived in Europe so late. After all, doesn't Microsoft have some kind of exclusivity deal with HBO Go for example? And I imagine the need to have dubs affected the matter as well, especially in countries like Italy.

Modern Sony dev tools run on top of Microsoft's Visual Studio. The PS3's linker is apparently way faster than the 360 equivalent which saves devs tons of time. And the Vita SDK has been held up as the best development environment for any game machine ever. The PS4 architecture is also less complicated and more straightforward than Durango's messy ESRAM/Move Engine design. We have every reason to believe PS4 will be the easiest to code on. It's silly to act like MS is unassailable. This is hardly Sony's first rodeo, and the crisis that the Cell architecture created for developers led directly to a huge effort within Sony World Wide Studios to improve the tools, documentation and create useful libraries.

Besides, MS has 30+ years in OS development too, but to this day every other version they release is a trainwreck.

Id like to see where it was said that Durango is harder to develop for. We've only heard from devs abt PS4.

Assuming is premature, lets be patient and wait for the NDA to be lifted.

Sony dnt do OS's give credit where its due.

It's disappointing that MS decided to take their fans on this ride, Nintendo style. The core of Xbox fans care about tech and graphics, so it's a shame that they have to suffer through this.

So many hoping for more, it's gonna be a rough launch.

Gameplay is more important than how "pretty" my game looks.

Hahaha yeah, when in reality the power difference matters BECAUSE they have similar architecture. Now don't get me wrong, I'm willing to bet Durago games will look fantastic but if the rumors turn out to be true there is no way you can ignore the power difference.

To be fair Vita OS is fucking fantastic.

Of course you ignore it. The vast majority of the world always ignores it. Thus the Wii. The DS. The 3DS etc. Content sells consoles. Not power. If the PS4 and Xbox have the same exact content, then price, marketing and incentives will be the differentiation. Microsoft sounds like they learned a thing or two from Nintendo. Sony's not going nuts, though. They haven't packed so much stuff into it that they're forced to charge 599 again, so obviously they've learned a thing or two as well.

Haven't used one in quite awhile. It sure wasn't fantastic the first year. Have they finally put friends, trophies, messaging all together in one app? That'd be a huge improvement imo. I also thought Near was a waste, but could easily be fixed to be more useful.

Always online sounds like cloud processing. Processing computational tasks on a cloud ALA Diablo III.

Also sounds like a horrible way to splinter your install base that has either crappy internet or a high ping.

Indeed, which is why they are going with a proven base (BSD).

It's honestly the best gaming machine OS that I had a chance to use. I don't want trophies and messaging and friends in one app at all. Sure friends and messaging make sense, but not trophies.

Re the first point, I meant in terms of talking about how the games will look etc. Sure brute power alone doesn't win you anything and there are tons of other factors to take into consideration. I wasn't talking from the 'who will win next gen' perspective but rather 'will the power difference amount to anything in the games' persepctive.

Bacon your back! Excellent.

Yeah Vita OS is pretty amazing right now. They consolidated a ton of the Apps and its definitely my favorite OS. Just lightning fast. I can be playing Persona 4 and switch to the walkthrough guide almost instantly then back into the game. The Vita is what gives me a shred of hope the PS4 OS won't be a disaster.

Yup. That's the only way it really makes sense. If that's the case also changing it at this point doesn't seem possible.

It is premature. But the argument is that the ESRAM, which is there to partially offset the less speedy DDR3 RAM, will require extra work to properly utilize.

The logic behind including ESRAM is that it allows lower latency fetching of data by the APU. In other words, when the APU requests data, it can get it quicker from the ESRAM rather than from the main DDR3 pool. The ESRAM has a bandwidth of 102 GB/s, while the DDR3 has a bandwidth of 68 GB/s. The upside is that these can be fed into the APU in parallel, allowing for 170 GB/s as long as both are being used to their maximum potential. On the other hand, PS4 has 168 GB/s GDDR5, meaning devs don't have to wrestle with two RAM pools at once and are still able to achieve nearly the same bandwidth. So rather than sticking all your data into a single pool and just grabbing it all at 168 GB/s, Durango devs will have to constantly refill the small 32 MB ESRAM pool in order to achieve a comparable bandwidth to PS4.

It's possible that software can automate this procedure, I don't know. It's also possible that my understanding is way off.

PS4 GDDR5 is 178 GB/s.

Also the 170 GB/s figure is only relating to 32 MB that both the DDR3 and ESRAM can read together at one time (but we're also not taking into consideration the move modules so there can be a lot going on there).

Here's what bkilian, former Xbox 360/Durango audio engineer, said on the Beyond3d forums about always-online DRM:

That sounds very optimistic with regards to piracy prevention.

As far as I know, the only way to really curb piracy is to not distribute the game at all, or to leave major cloud-based components out. Like Onlive and Diablo III try to do (respectively).
