not in tennis. it's only the 2nd time not a total mug won the tournament, it has no history in the sport and history is really important. a gold is the icing on the cake not a part of it.

exactly, also this "career golden slam" thing is overrated. do it in a calendar year and it might be the hardest achievement in sports. getting it in a career mostly comes down to luck.

The Olympics come around once every four years. A Grand Slam comes around four times every year. Everything the Olympics stands for means that a Gold Medal should be the ulitimate crowning achievement in any sport or event. I know that isn't the case in reality, but it should be.

The Olympic Games are technically meaningless in tennis. It's great for Murray, but for tennis--in the grand scheme of things--it's just another tournament.

Federer would take beating Sampras' total weeks at #1 and getting that rank back + his 7th Wimbledon title 100 times over the gold.

Murray played amazing and this is well deserved for him, though. Doing it to Federer too should give him some huge confidence for the rest of the year and the hard court season.

The football gold (still a great achievement that any athlete will treasure) is played by under 23's with a few overage players.

The tennis is a full professional tournament with the world's elite.

IMO beating Federer in a best of 5 set final is more significant than winning the gold medal. It signifies that Murray may actually be able to make the step up and win some GS tournaments.

I'm not trying to diminish his achievement but this can have some long term ramifications for Andy that will mean a lot more than a gold medal.
