Mafia 3 |OT| "Family isn't who you're born with, it's who you die for"

So far I don't have a problem with the mission structures but I know how fast that can change so I'm limiting myself to the bare minimum, not doing everything possible but only what's necessary.

What I've noticed and find a bit jarring is that the weather can change from cutscene to gameplay in a mission. Better solution would've been a time-skip so that cutscene and gameplay are the same, ala GTA V.

How much kickback do you guys get and how does this really work?

Kickbacks aka income is affected by things like how many rackets your sub-boss is running and did you kill or recruit snitches and old sub-bosses when taking over district. For e.g. Haitians currently control 1x 50k USD and 2x 60k USD rackets with most of old bosses being part of it, they generate me 4400 USD kickback.

When you take over racket it's e.g. 40k / 60k and to get it to 60k / 60k you need do sub-boss specific task like running weed. Maximizing racket potential maximizes kickback you will be getting.

I don't know if this is intentional design or in the PC version but i noticed if you are crouched on PS4 and you aim while out of cover you strafe to the left automatically and it's kind of annoying

The only real gripe I have with the gameplay, is that you start the game incredibly overpowered, and can't see how you get rewarded by progressing. Perhaps there are harder enemies later in the game, but with aim assist off and the super OP whistle, from the very beginning of the game Lincoln is basically unstoppable.

I'm playing on Medium and you can get killed almost instantanely if you're outnumbered, make mistakes, don't have ammo (it's pretty limited) or don't have cover. You're not at all overpowered, the only thing that is OP is the whistle, but that's part of stealth, not combat.

I'm playing on medium with aim assist off, and I've only died twice which was due to jank. It's a really easy cover shooter from the get-go.

I can see this game ending up like Mad Max, a really great game with repetitive mission structure. If you're willing to put up with it or just don't particularly mind it, you'll have a great time, but everyone else probably won't like it that much.

Even on the hardest its still very very easy. Unless as the other poster said, you don't pay attention, make mistakes.

I still liked it a great deal.

I'm a few hours in. The storytelling is sublime so far. Top tier. But the gameplay is archaic and not in a good way. Laughable ai, poor controls and garbage janky combat. I can understand why they didn't send review copies out because I predict some reviewers are going to tear this game a new one.

I would say more like Assassin's Creed Syndicate - in fact it almost retains the same structure in trying to take over territory. And you get grander sub boss missions that allow the story to progress, much like AC. I kind of love that structure so I'm not mad at it. I will also say that thus far (10 hours), the best shootouts of Mafia 2 have been easily eclipsed gameplay wise. If you liked Mafia 2 for its gameplay, this game really builds on it.

Yeah I love the stealth as well. The cover system works really well, and the whistle is a crazy OP mechanic. I just go around like I'm John Rambo himself.

Just realized I killed a racket boss because I didn't do the wire tap...dammit there goes lost revenue and the trophy attempt.

That whole wiretap system is just.. I don't even know. So you need to wiretap the area and only the area where the racket boss building is, and only if you do that you're able to convert him instead of just kill him? And you get like what, 1000 dollars extra if you spare him? I'm not entirely sure if this is a throwaway feature or something actually important.

I kind of wish they didn't have you collecting fuses and instead allowed you to just wiretap from one item, because it's super useful to find out where your missing collectibles are if you need to it. Tracking becomes so much easier, much like that in Arkham Origins. But I haven't spared anybody! Killing them all!

It's not because you find it easy that the gameplay balance is broken and that you're "unstoppable". I showed you in detail that it's not the case.

Just compare it to GTA V or Watch Dogs, who have similar gameplay, but give you more margin : lots of ammo, more health, less cornered by IA in or out of cover... Those are pretty easy, Mafia III is (at least in the beginning) not hard but has more depth and doesn't forgive your mistakes. Checkpoints are part of that too, in the typical GTA-like you don't lose more than 3 to 5 minues if you reload a checkpoint.

Cutscenes and acting are an A.

Acting is B, writing B too, but they don't know how to use a frame or light a scene.

I'm with you, I liked Syndicates structure as well, I also quite like the gameplay, body specific animations for shooting people will never not be satisfying.

Anyone else had a bug with one of Cassandras weed racket missions, think it's like the third or fourth one ? Went to the place in Bayou and there's no boat or enemies there at all!

There were stealth elements like tailing someone or sneak into a mansion or pose as someone else in order to steal or kill someone. But there weren't particular stealth gameplay mechanics.

Same here. It's bugged after the second run - you can never pick up the third shipment.

It isn't bugged. Objective won't spawn if her rackets are at maximum income. You need give her more rackets and territory in order to weed runs spawn again, until those rackets are also at max income. Game could do better job about telling this to player because how it tells now can be missed easily.

Well, why is there an objective marker in the middle of nowhere? Okay, it's not bugged in a game logic sense but from a UI-perspective, it's hardly a feature. Driving into the bayou is quite a chore since there's hardly anything else to do there.

Yep its a known bug. The game loses track of stuff a bit.

That whistle mechanic is indeed ridiculous. Guess all they teach in Special Forces is how to whistle in specific direction, haha :D

Loved the beginning but really not digging the first mission after.

I hope this isn't an MGSV situation where the opening is tight and handcrafted with brilliant pacing then the rest of the game is bullshit repetitive run of the mill missions.

I`m three hours into the game, and I`m really enjoying it. Yes, it has far too many technical issues and poor framerate on Xbox One, but that doesn`t prevent me from enjoying.

Lashley

Why does he wear the mask!?
Is it normal for the game to warn continuing will cause the remaining racket objectives to be removed when I've done them all?

Worried in case some are hidden

I just got all three associates, had a meeting, and unlocked a hell of a lot of new story missions to tackle in whatever order I want. I've been skipping ALL the optional missions because I rented this from Redbox but I've been playing it basically non-stop (aside from work and sleep) since I picked it up yesterday.

The stealth combat, gunplay, movement, and driving are all phenomenal. The repetitive gameplay loop, however, is utter shit. The main thing keeping me going is the amazing story. I'm LOVING the cutscenes. The game makes me think of the latest season of American Horror Story when it comes to those, where you carry out a mission and do gameplay things, then it cuts to a court room in the future where someone is being investigated. Super cool style.

EDIT: Also I'm playing on PS4 and have had ZERO bugs, glitches, crashes, framerate issues, slowdown, or anything. I hope you all on the Xbox One and PC get a patch or something because it's a really enjoyable game if you don't mind the repetition.

Framerate issues there absolutely is, and its 99% down the the frame pacing. Its pretty hideous. I guess you are lucky in that you don't see it. Borked lighting is absolutely an issue. Both of these issues have clearly been manifesting throughout this thread.

On a positive note, the writing and realisation of the characters continues to impress me.

Even small characters, like the questgivers who activate the side missions are fully fleshed out people with their own foibles and backgrounds.

Just had a touching scene with Burke's daughter where she and Lincoln reminisce about their dead-end criminal lives when really all she's doing in a game sense is activate the moonshine earn raising activity.

Moments like that make it worth putting up with all the technical crap. It's amazing how scarce good writing in gaming still is after all these decades.

Strong points are the story, characters, dialogues and narration which are top notch.
Gameplay wise it isn't trying to innovate anything, it's the usual open world criminal game formula. Mission structure is pretty much the same of Assassin's Creed Syndicate. You have activities to do in the different districts plus the main story missions.
The city is amazing, great atmosphere and full of life, especially at night. I like how civils look at what you're doing, try to call the police, etc.
So it seems a really good game to me, I can't say that it is trying to do anything new so far gameplay wise but it's really good.
On PS4 the game runs pretty well and besides a few weird random changes in lighting while you're driving I've not encountered any particular bug so far.
Sorry for PC owners burnt with the 30fps lock story.

Really enjoying this so far. It's fun and engaging, and the way the story has been handled (still maybe 4 hours in so just left the tutorial section) is very well done - something I hope other developers take notice of and implement. Plus they've done the setting really well and they've really made Lincoln Clay out to be a really dangerous character. I'm really enjoying this so far.

Quick question - is it a bad idea to go after a racket's main guy before taking out the enforcers or doing the optional missions? Since going after the boss removes the ability to do the other optional stuff after.

These lose the cops parts of the game are such garbage. I'm going max speed but still have a ton of cops on me. Then when I finally get away from them, a cop car appears right in front of me out of nowhere resetting it all.

The light issues are extremely annoying as well. Especially during
the abandoned themepark

I'm at the point that i feel like the wiretaps are basically there to facilitate finding the collectibles but tied it to the rackets and underbosses so it seemed more thematically relevant. On one hand it's a huge timesink and super grindy getting these damn fuses on the other hand i respect that it fits the themes of the game and thus far it seems like wiretapping isn't exactly mandatory if you don't want to deal with it.

Get out your car, run and hide. They lose sight of you immediately.

Love that stealth is so easy to get into and abuse lol. It makes the game a lot of fun for me. Just sneaking around and slicing people to death.

Overall I know it's not the greatest looking game, but some of he facial animations are pretty damn good.....especially when they do that light film grain effect for interviews with the priest.

Having a lot of fun.....also nice to see you can hack a junction box and not every zone is flooded with collectibles. It's really good for recon and recruiting use though!

Redboxed it and back to being glad I went with Gamefly for this one. The story is fun but the gameplay is boring as shit doing the same stuff over and over. I'm to the point now of rushing the main story missions just move along. Not sure how far I am but just unlocked the police dispatcher to my bag of tricks and have 3 of the bosses working for me.

They should've pushed it back another year but at least it's now obvious why there were no early reviews.

Also for anyone just starting: cops
avoid railroad tracks like the plague. Get out of jail free card.

It depends how OCD you are about completing stuff. Not killing the enforcers just means they'll show up in whatever area you go to confront the underboss. Completely the other activities seems to really just be an opportunity for you to get more money and resources as the rackets have these things laying around in spades. you can easily find a few thousand dollars in loose money laying around the racket

I'm fairly indifferent about it as a gameplay mechanic but the thematic connection is a bit rich: you're the upcoming capo di tutti capi of a major city but still have to dig through trash and jimmy open boxes to get a clear picture of what's going on in a given area.

Surely Lincoln could have recruited a bunch of junkies from the Hollow to do that shit for him?

Lost a ton of money (relative to how much I have come across) because of some fucking glitch where I couldn't possibly escape the cops anymore. Fused into a car and couldn't move

The highs and lows of Mafia 3:

It's nighttime so I walk into a bar to see if there's a drinking minigame or whatever. The owner tells me I'm not welcome here, and after that the game prompts me that certain stores don't want people of color visiting, and if I hang around too long an owner will call the police.
So I wait for a bit and the owner walks up to me, probably to talk shit or something. So I back out of the bar, but he keeps following me. I walk into the alley behind the bar, the guy still following me and then I turn around and press the takedown button. Lincoln grabs the guy by the throat and with one right hook knocks the life out of him. Like straight up, the guy is fucking dead. Drops like a sack of potatoes. That's what you get, I suppose.

Unfortunately an old lady saw me and wants to call the police. The game tells me that I'd better take down the witness before she gets a chance to call the cops. So eh, okay I guess I'll do that. So Lincoln, this 200-pound killing machine runs up to this old lady waggling her way to the nearest payphone and with one move just fucking dropkicks this 70-year-old lady to the ground. Other people spot me, one of them also decides to be a hero so I have to run up to this guy as well and choke him the fuck out.

All I wanted was a drink.
