Mario Kart Switch: all Wii U + new tracks, characters, battle mode, < 3 mos fr launch

So so far, for the first 3 months we have 2 old games that did nothing to sell the WiiU with some extra content, a 6 month late last gen remaster for people that want a third opportunity to play Skyrim, though this time somewhat portably, and a new 3D Mario.

I really hope there's a lot of launch titles we know nothing about, because I'm starting to worry about exactly how much more this is going to appeal to the mainstream gaming audience and casual mobile game players more than the WiiU did.

There have been rumors about a new DKR floating around.

If they wanted to, I could see Nintendo making it and filling the cast with pre-existing Kong family members and/or new characters altogether to replace all the Rare characters.

What about the spectacular music from DKR? Is that owned by Nintendo or did Rare took them into oblivion?

Splatoon actually did a lot to sell Wii U's, it's just that the Wii U was still the Wii U

and also you can assume that people who bought Wii U's from day 1 did so with the intention of getting games like Mario Kart

so while the Wii U was no success by any measure your point that they did nothing is incorrect

it continues to amaze me today how a "new 3D Mario" for launch is being casually tossed aside when a week ago everyone had it as the big holiday game.

Wii U is dead. Let it sink into the darkness.

EVERY WiiU has Mario kart 8 !

If they are going to sell Mk8 Switch for full price the least they can do is give someone who bought the WiiU version something bonus ... even if we have to pay it =P

Damn this makes it hard to not buy a Switch early. I was thinking about waiting as I have too many games to play. Battle mode is something I wanted.

I wonder if a new full 8 tracks/ 4 characters F-Zero DLC is all we will get as close to a F-Zero game for the next 13 years.

I hope they keep Mario Kart 8s battle mode tracks as well. Best battle mode ever, only problem is the few number of tracks

It has largely to do with the fact that we praticaly didn't saw anything about it.

Wait when a proper trailer drop to see everyone going insane

Excluding the Mario Kart Arcade games, these are the characters that have been playable in the franchise's past yet aren't in Mario Kart 8:

Birdo
Bowser Jr.
Diddy Kong
Donkey Kong Jr.
Dry Bones
Funky Kong
Honey Queen
King Boo
Koopa Paratroopa
Petey Piranha
R.O.B.
Wiggler

King Boo is all but confirmed for MK Switch, what are your hopes for the rest? The more the merrier, I say. Unless there's some truth to those Diddy Kong Racing rumors, he's a MUST for MK Switch, and personally I have favorites in DK Jr, Funky Kong, Dry Bones and Petey Piranha.

Wii U owner am cry :(

New tracks and a REAL battle mode? Now I'm super interested.

With the previous courses and the DLC packs, non Wii-U owners are going to be shocked at how massive this game is!

Any hope for 1080p? The Wii U game was gorgeous but jaggies were a problem.

I know Emily has a mixed track record with leaks, but I really, really, REALLY hope this is true.

Mario Kart 8 is one of my favorite games ever. Like Top 5 material. Easily my favorite Mario Kart. I don't want to give up any of the current content in MK8, but I also want new content. Taking everything in MK8 and adding more sounds PERFECT.

The Switch's killer app for me, out of the current rumored lineup. Zelda looks incredible but MK8 is already a proven property.

MK, Smash, Splatoon, 3D Mario and Zelda all in the first year is biiiiiiggggg.

Now let's get Pokemon in there.

If you're willing to believe those rumors, then you might as well trust Pokémon is coming, too. Emily Rogers already said a Pokémon game is coming in the first year. She said the one she heard about isn't Pokken and seemed to tease that Game Freak is making it. Someone else suggested that it's cool and should be kept a surprise, so I'm very curious what that means.

I love me some rumors so for the sake of my hype I'll believe it. I'd love to see the Ranger series come back, or Pokemon Pinball. If it has to be a spinoff, obviously.

It will be interesting to see how Nintendo advertises this (and the other "enhanced ports"). This is essentially a sequel that is using the same engine while including the previous games content, IMO.

They can always continue to support it with additional content throughout the Switch's life as well.

New Splatoon pack-in... 3D Mario, at launch... Skyrim remaster, at launch... Zelda soon after... Ultimate editions of MK8 and Smash... So much good stuff — it's overwhelming!

I half-expect Pokemon, too. Sun/Moon scale surprisingly well in HD, and that's with rudimentary hack-jobs that fans did with the demo. Imagine Black 2/White 2-style sequels — Pokemon Solar Eclipse and Lunar Eclipse — or maybe a third version: Pokemon Eclipse, Pokemon Prism, etc. Throw in new Alola forms, add new Mega Evolutions this time, and some alternate forms for legendaries, etc. Could be great.

I also half-expect Animal Crossing the first year. I doubt the AC team has been working purely on Amiibo Festival and Happy Home Designer this whole time. I wouldn't be surprised if a proper AC was in the works for WiiU but made a tactical retreat to Switch. Could be a great holiday title.

And then there is the question of what Retro Studios is making. Hmm.

Wohoooo!! Proper battle mode is what MK8 needed to be the perfect Mario Kart game. And now with that plus new characters AND freaking new tracks!? OH MY <3

New tracks, and keeping all the WiiU tracks, is the most exciting part about this rumored Mario Kart. One of MK8's greatest strengths was its world-building. Easily the most compelling depiction of the Mushroom Kingdom to date. Give me more worlds to explore, packed full of detail.

This also means more GameXplain track analyses. Nice!

Battle mode better be extensive as fuck.

They really should add different time of day for the old tracks so they at least look a bit different.
Maybe add a survival mode GP where you start out with points and have to maneuver through tracks with way more hazards enabled.
I just don't see myself enjoying the game as much everytime an old track gets selected online.

I'd prefer they don't mess with the time of day for existing tracks. I mean, it could be cool, but many existing tracks already feel perfect as is (Mario Kart Stadium taking place at night, for example).

I regret buying Mario Kart 8 digitally. I wonder if save data from all of these up-ports from the Wii U will transfer to the Switch.

No the least they can do is not support the Wii U version any further. Which is what they're going to do.

The Wii U and it's games are done. I don't understand this mentality that people feel screwed over for buying a game years ago, and a new version comes out on a new platform and somehow they feel they are owed something. You got what you paid for, a Mario Kart game on Wii U. That's what you paid for, you were happy to pay for it, and you got everything out of it you anticipated.

I expect there are some launch titles we don't know about it, certainly third party and potentially first party as well, and then we should get plenty of non-Wii U port launch window titles throughout 2017. Nintendo said they wanted to delay Switch to ensure a steady flow of software thereafter.

Don't you want to race on cheep cheep beach/cloud top cruise at dusk/night though? Come on, you know that would look fantastic in mk8s engine.
I don't mean them to replace the current time of day for those tracks. Just that the game randomly chooses a time of day whenever the track gets selected (like the animal crossing seasons).

After seeing what simple textures swaps can do to the tracks thanks for Cafiine I agree 100%
It is literally a matter of switching/replacing a few files here and there in a track's folder.
They would only need to take care of the light sources on track depending on what time of the day the track is taking place so the changes look natural but it certainly would be a nice addition to make the old tracks feel somehow new again.

Also this is rumored to be the fabled Super Mario 64-2/Sunshine 2 that people have been clamoring for...

And all we hear is "ports! ports! ports!" That's beginning to sound like "EMAILS EMAILS EMAILS!!"

And when we tell people the ports will likely have a very substantial amount of new content that's treated as a rumor, even though the source of that rumor is the same as the source of pretty much all of these rumors!

If they were to add extra times of day, the ideal arrangement would be to let us choose.

For example, you could still play Mario Kart Stadium at night, like the original, or Cheep Cheep Beach during the day, but by holding a button when you choose them, you could play sunset variants instead.

This is probably just wishful thinking, but I hope as a cute little bonus, they include Kirby as a guest character with a Warp Star Air Ride machine.

I want Kirby Air Ride 2. :(

For offline play? sure.
Online tho? that shit has to be random lol
