I wonder if the other unnamed prisoners in that mission are randomly generated and can be given the skill? Or are they unique like Malak? Really, why can your guys even die on Mother Base!

Agree with this!

I don't mind assigning people into different departments, but I had some fights break out, so got rid of the trouble makers, which then caused my levels to drop. Fair enough, I can replace them with new people, but it's an annoyance.

If you update the scope, do you get to identify who troublemakers are in the field, or do you only ever know once they are back at MB? My scope is currently Level 2

It's pretty amazing to think that after about 50 hours - by some way the most amount of time I've played a single player game in ages - there's still so much ahead.

MGSV definitely has a few flaws, but honestly.. I really do feel like this is once in a generation level stuff. It frequently reminds me how incredible it really is. Phenomenal game on several levels.

I agree. Overall I think the jump to open world has benefited Metal Gear far more than it has harmed it. It's not perfect and no game is (after my inital exploration story, I've come to the conclusion that this open world is not meant to explored so much as scanned for tactical advantages and spacing out outposts), but I honestly think this ranks up there as the best gameplay I've ever experienced. I'm also perhaps exposing my belief that the other Metal Gears had too many cutscenes, but after about 12 hours I think the amount of story content is fine. Between the main missions (Ep 6 yo), tapes, and bizarre optional cutscene(s) at Mother Base, there's definitely enough to keep me interested. And I haven't even met Quiet yet!

I'm more bothered about the fact that -I- can die on Motherbase just exploring it. What the fuck! Lol.

Had a friend at work who died messing around at Mother Base right after getting there. Fell off into the water and that was it. You'd think Big Boss would, you know, at least be able to swim or in the very least have his crew help him out of the water.

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
Also hearing that people are losing their top notch crew doesn't bode well for me. I guess I'll only be logging in for the daily rewards and disconnecting from the server. Hated being invaded in souls games and I'm sure I'll hate it even more now.

I'm pretty sure it only applies to FOBs. Only crew assigned to or played on FOBs are vulnerable. Mother Base staff should be fine.

Mine is only level 3 so all it added was marking... the skills are still ???? when I try to analyze soldiers.

Violent members seem to have a chance to kill your crew, unless Malak dying is some kind of story event or something. His status is "Fatally wounded" instead of KIA like the operatives that die on combat missions, for example.

20 hours in...MGS5 really is 2014's Destiny. The similarities are staggering.

+AMAZING play mechanics, feels great to play when the action starts
+Looks really nice, although clearly cross-gen

-Open World is really a few walled off linear hot spots used for main missions and filler "free roam" missions, with resources to collect. Areas you think you can traverse, ya can't. Its a hassle getting from one side to the other. No NPCs, villages, anything particularly interesting or notable.

-You spend a lot of time sitting in loading screens after you extract from every mission. Your ship takes you back to the hub base, until you realize its horrifically boring with maybe 2 activities and you can't interact with anybody, so you go back to the loading screen ship.

-There's not a whole lot of narrative momentum or structure, you can play for hours and not really have much of an emotional investment in any of the world or its characters. Main character feels like an avatar and not a person. You do "main" missions thinking they'll advance the plot, and not only are they very similar to the filler missions, but it feels like nothing you did mattered anyway. Just another chore taking care of.

-There's a big grinding metagame they attached to it, so you're always on the lookout to collect a hundred different things to build yourself up and micromanage various components of your loadout. IDK, they felt this was a needed evolution over the old games where you just played it and found cool shit in the world. Now they make you grind for it.

Can't wait for the expansion next year that makes MGS5 a great game

As much as I want to say "you're wrong, MGS5 is great!", I can't really disagree with most of your points.

With that said, I still play Destiny a ton and I'm having a lot of fun just playing Phantom Pain, criticisms aside.

I also got way bored with helicopter extractions. I feel like loading screens are becoming more unacceptable in current gen and I'm peeved every time I have to extract in a helicopter without having the ability to just have the copter pick me up and drop me someplace else without any unnecessary delay. You can do that on mother base, but even that's ridiculous because the copter decides to fly fucking laps around mother base before actually dropping you on the pad you want.

It's not really a big complaint, and I predict there'll be more options as I get further in the game, like extracting on a fulton'd storage container and such, but jesus can the copter just cut the bullshit and bring me where I want to go?

To be fair, Big Boss was never as talkative as Solid Snake.

I do think the voices aren't distinctive enough, though. Miller and Ocelot sound the same sometimes, and Kiefer doesn't do a great job standing out either.

Watching my brother play Peace Walker, well... it's night and day. He had a lot of dialogue, but you are correct. It's still a major difference in TPP.

I hope that future MGS games aren't always open world like this one is, or at least that they have scenarios similar to the older games as well.

Well, some people are just putting trouble makers as guards on their FOB, which means they're completely disposable anyway and you have a chance to troll an invader if they try to steal them from you. lol

the online is fucking annoying. it makes loading longer for the damn menu or when I'm loading into a mission. when I was offline because of server errors, it would load super fast. I might just go offline for good if this loading garbage keeps up.

Aye. To be honest I think the balance between gameplay and story was fine. There's never been more game in an MGS before, but those story threads, the narrative direction, even the crazy Kojima cutscenes are still here. I really, really hope those who say stuff such as "Silent Snake" in response to the lack of them in the early going stick with the game. I think what they're after is still here. And I say that having - apparently - only still seen part of it myself.

Yeah its annoying as fuck.

Also the FOB tuts and messages etc. Honestly, I just manually disconnected. Its better that way.

In my game he has no status at all. Just an empty bar. wtf.

I've fallen to my death so many times climbing around MB....

Once, I fell so far I broke my leg but I didn't die. Lost 30 Heroism. Insult to injury. I just imagine all the soldiers who saw it laughing at me. "Did you see Big Boss fall and break his leg climbing that pipe?!" :(

Suddenly you can't interrogate guards anymore??
Duh :p

If you read/listen to Kojima's old interviews, he always wanted to make a game like MGSV but couldn't due to hardware limitations/other stuff. This review by Simon Parkin--a fantastic journo btw--nails it.

This is the final evolution of a video game director’s singular vision, one first painted in the crude pixels of the 1980s and now fully realised, fully resplendent.

It's weird since many of the same combat mechanics were in Ground zeroes but I feel like I'm able to deal with the stealth much easier.

The reflex is a great idea (even if you want to avoid it). I'm just tearing around the world and dealing Diamond justice. I haven't really gotten to the point where enemies are reacting with gear or tactics so I'm sure that will change things but I'm sooo much happier with just the minute to minute gameplay. I don't feel like I have to restart if I'm seen.

That will probably change if I try to get S ranks but I've gotten A or B on every mission and getting seen maybe once at most. Those mission objective will probably be a bitch but I'm not worrying about it yet.

I'm one of those (finished mission 6 last night) and is just a minor thing for me, besides I'm pro Solid Snake so I don't mind if Big Boss doesn't talk, he has nothing interesting to say most of the time. -_-
Game is fantastic and I'll play it until the very end playing most if not all missions.

I did Mission 6: Honey Bee last night for the first time and... wow.

I did it 100% stealth until right at the very end. I can't even imagine how you can stealth and also rescue that prisoner/hostage. I got semi-close and then he got executed. There are SO MANY guards in that last spot that you probably have to rescue him before they take him into those ruins. I also can't imagine how you can S rank this with stealth either. Anyone know of a video of someone doing it? I saw an S rank video but the guy seemed to just run&gun most of it.

At the end of the mission to took me an 1 hour 6 minutes and I got a B rank/octopus.

The show must go on. The series didn't stop when hayter was shit canned. It won't stop either with kojima gone too.

That wasn't the indication we had before that PR guy came forward. Before that the line was 'Konami are focussing on gambling and mobile games'.

Then the instant MGSV is a success: 'MGSV WILL GO ON! WE VALUE THE SERIES! KONAMI ARE DEDICATED!'

Such two-faced bullshit.

I'm sure MGS will continue. I just feel evolving MGSV with "living battlefield" ideas is something I'd expect from KojiPro. A new team? Who knows.

Fully agreed – just got the impression you weren't aware of that development!

Just got a message from Miller saying mother base is under attack, and a strut is taken over so I should head back, I went straight back and...

There is nothing here :/ no missions, no cutscene, nothing.

What gives?

This is why all the Mother Base stuff is important.

It adds context. Context to your actions, context to the story... Context to everything you see and do.

A) this sounds like a spoiler, please spoiler-tag. I'm 30 hours in and this hasn't happened.

B) It could be your Forward Operating Base that's under attack by an intruder. If you're that far and have unlocked it.

You can definitely lose staff from Mother Base. Combat dispatches have a small chance to kill your staff and some of mine died while in the med bay.

How long does it take for DD to grow from a diamond pup into a diamond dog?

Also every time I fly away on my helicopter I tranq him and he flops over. Sweet dreams!

I just waited until they took him back into the ruins, then I threw a smoke grenade and went in and fucked the three of them up. Picked up the dude, went back out and fulton'd him.

Shit, seems that once
Malak
is dead you've lost the skill for good, even if you replay the mission :(

Least I know now not to Deploy any of my staff with unique skills

I just waited until they took him back into the ruins, then I threw a smoke grenade and went in and fucked the three of them up. Picked up the dude, went back out and fulton'd him.

I did the same, fultoned him out of the hole in the cave roof.

Everything turned to shit after that though and dhorse saved my ass.
