MS don't give a damn. Consumers are too damn predictable. All they have to do is slap on a new coat of PR and dangle a copy of Halo and Madden off a fishing hook. They'll be in for a good run in no time.

about a quarter of Americans dont have internet access and about 1/3 of all 360s never connected to the internet and even if Madden and Halo are to die for, servicemen and women literally have no way of playing them with the Xbone. This isn't some little thing.

I wonder what Microsoft is doing and thinking behind closed doors. I'm not that old, but I've never seen something quite like this before.
I imagine, internally, they're very split.

They want a device that is less aligned with the traditional Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo console dynamic and more in line with connected devices like tablets, AppleTV's, Roku's etc.

If successful, it could pay off huge for them and become incredibly profitable, even if they move fewer units than this generation.

Some theorize MS is expecting all next-gen platforms to sell fewer units than current gen, so they're taking Apple's old approach by only targeting developed nations and richer households, hoping that their overall potential profit-per-unit will be much higher than the 360.

It's a huge gamble, one that could only be done by a company with an astronomical marketing budget (Samsung, Apple etc).

The true believers see the XBOX as an in-home entertainment PC and see Steam as their inspiration/competition.

Problem is that they're the only ones who see this. Even if they're right in the long term, they're NOT right at this very moment.

says right here they will have a workaround for them to play so long as game is activated once and no subsequent 24 hour check, they are just not giving details

I think that was referring to the rumor of IP checks for region locks. Basically if you have a US account and have activated the game once you can continue the rest of the 24 hour checks in an unsupported country. It doesn't say you can skip them.

I feel that's huge. Microsoft has essentially banned all importing. And if the military guys want to import a game while overseas they'll be shit out of luck as well.

What kills me is how Sony beat them to the punch at making a console that has the potential to compete with Steam. A "Steam box" if you will.

Self publishing allowed, no cost to send out patches, indies excited about profit sharing arrangements... Sony took the Steam model, slapped it in a closed system, and made it to where you can also get games on a disk. Steam has an offline mode too! So, there's that.

Like, it's not exactly like Steam, but it's close enough to where small time developers are hyped to have their games on PSN, Vita, and Steam. How did MS fuck up this bad? Shit, plus even has limited time sales! Who else are we familiar with that does that type of stuff?

what the hell happens if you move to another country?

You have to rebuy all your xbox games for that country?

What the hell MS?
really?

My favorite part of next-gen is seeing the complete shit storm that is happening to MS right now.

They should of just back peddled on their used game and online check in bullshit at E3 and ditched it all. Yeah, would you of seen some criticize? Sure. Would you be in the tsunami filled shitstorm that is going on now? No. *grabs popcorn* we are in for a long and hilarious ride.

Surprised to see maddow weigh in on this

I'm not, if you know her. She's a big supporter of the military, given her family history as well, and she frequently fights in the name of any member of the military (ex: wanting parades in major cities for the mark of the end of the Iraq War).

Another day, another hilarious Xbone PR fail. This is the worst console ever created. What a disaster.

I don't think I've ever seen a company so openly tell their existing customers to basically go to a competitor. "We know you enjoyed our previous console but guess you're out of luck on this one." The whole thing is a shitty deal with zero benefit for the customer.

Daaamn. It's a testament to

1. how bad Microsoft has truly screwed up this thing, and
2. what balls Maddow has

when you consider the first two letters of her employer's name.

NBC owns MSNBC in full. Microsoft is no longer an owner in any way of the brand. They serve only as a hedgestone in the history of the channels creation.

I finished reading all of the articles.
There are no special concessions for military whatsoever. But there are new details on how the geolocking works for everyone.
If you activate a game while you're physically in the US, then they can play it in an unsupported country if you have an internet connection.

Holy crap, I expected them to have thought of this and made a statement before now. The military/college student campus thing was mentioned sometime just after the big online only announcement wasn't it?

Like I've posted in other threads, my deployed location which hosts thousands of soldiers/sailors/airmen/marines year round will be unable to utilize this. As it stands right now, the CAC has a ratio of like 10-1 for 360s to PS3s. That's a lot of Xbones aren't going to be purchased.

If tomorrow I woke up and saw a thread with a news item saying 'Xbox One preorder form in shop gives women papercut, woman dies of scepticemia - Microsofts PR tell family she should have ordered online/go fuck themselves' I honestly wouldn't be surprised at this point.

They are...godlike. I don't want them to stop.

his was the Microsoft response we recieved:

“With Xbox One you can game offline for up to 24 hours on your primary console, or one hour if you are logged on to a separate console accessing your library. Offline gaming is not possible after these prescribed times until you re-establish a connection. Although we’re very excited about Xbox One, we remain dedicated to Xbox 360 now and for years to come. In fact, we are expecting some of the greatest blockbusters of 2013 and 2014 to come out on Xbox 360 such as ‘Grand Theft Auto V,’ ‘Call of Duty: Ghosts,’ ‘Madden NFL 25’ and ‘FIFA 14.’”

“I don’t have additional details to share and can’t speculate on workarounds at this time,” wrote Xbox rep Danica Stickel in an emailed response to questions, repeating the suggestion that troops could just use the 360 instead. “Although we’re very excited about Xbox One, we remain dedicated to Xbox 360 now and for years to come. The thing that defenders of the always-online Xbone approach always fail to overlook that the PS4 is also an always-online machine. It just doesn't NEED to always be online.

You can leave the PS4 on its sleep state and it can still download updates and all that shit for your games while you're away. The Xbone requirement to be always online is PURELY for DRM purposes.

This. PS4 will also have the services like Netflix and stuff. And yes with PSN+ its gonna do system and game updates

Yeah. This is really a storm in a teacup. The Xbox one was never going to be let into any Military base in the world, not with a mandatory camera attached, DRM or no DRM.

No offense though, do US servicemen really spend a whole day on the front line, then go home and play battlefield and call of duty? That would be the fucking last thing id want to see.

Its like a prostitute going home to watch porn.
Not the same thing since gaming is digital and looks fake. Porn is real.(Except Hentai)

The norm once you get too big to fail. :3

They never got too big to fail. They were neck and neck with Sony last gen in sales.

Always seemed to me the typical military type would be playing Xbox, and everyone I knew in the armed forces had a 360. Will be interesting to see how this pans out.

No. You just can't get any new ones, lol.

Wow, do you guys think mainstream media will pick this up?
Would be freaking hilarious to see Bill O. Reilly go after Microsoft :D

In germany some mainstream news outlets mentioned XboxOne and its policies while covering the whole "prism" thing. But they will sure as hell not go after troops stuff. Nobody cares about the military over here.

It's like MS is slapping us hard in the face with this draconian atrocity.

You know what I think? If the X1 flops hard, MS will do a relaunch removing all DRM BS and upgrade to 8GB DDR5 RAM.

I will get that if that happens.

They are going to change a console to appease like 2% of an install base? Doubtful.

ya, who gives a shit about the military.

-_-

why? Why are you so eager to forgive them? lol, it's like the pimp who tells his ho, don't make me hit you baby, I don't like hitting you.

Kinda unrelated, but does anyone have the actual quote when Microsoft said something along the lines of "Why would you live in countries where you can't play/afford Xbox?" I keep seeing that meme go around and I can't quite put it together.

They're expecting 1 billion combined next gen consoles sold.

It truly does, I just don't know how to do it.

I can add it, I made the original gif. Now I'm getting better so don't need another gaffer to loop it lol.

Will be bigger though and I've not got making them more efficient down yet.
