Military personnel on Xbox One; Microsoft responds

I thought the pr coming out of Sony after the ps3 unveiling was bad. I thought the Wii U was in trouble. Now, looking at the Xbox One, I can't help but think that those former two things are just drops in the water and this online drm stuff is a huge rock rolling down a hill and crashing.

Never said worldwide. Not once. Your goalpost is imagined.

No you said you expect the XBO to outsell the PS4 this holiday season and even offered a bet on it. You didn't narrow it down to a single country until later. That's moving the goalpost.

A few million consoles won't affect MS bottom line. That is a small percentage of the install base.

It's not just about the guys that are actually in the army.

If Daddy Marine gets a PS4 to take to the boonies where he can;t get a connection, what do you think he'll get Jr Marine for Christmas? What about his brothers and sisters and cousins and shit? He'll talk to them, they'll be turned off too. Not all of them sure, but some.

Me. 6 month self ban on this site. I'll ask a mod to enforce.

You seem pretty confident. The loser gets banned from posting for six months.

This doesn't seem very smart.

Several GameStop employees and people who have pre ordered have said they were given far fewer pre order slots on XB1 than what Sony has given them. CBoaT has also claimed they are having yield issues in manufacturing, which means they won't be able to spit out as many units this holiday. CBoaT is also never wrong. All indications are that Microsoft won't be able to spit out as many units. Based on the information out there right now, it seems foolish to risk your account on something like this.

I remember trying to guide some people through connecting the PS3 to college Internet and not having success. I think I remember having to tell them to speak with the school admins regarding the issue.
Yeah, I think there is a way to connect at my school, but you have to jump through so many hoops, it's not really worth it. Not to mention that our internet crashes all the time.

This sounds exactly like what an MS exec would say. Which is kind of missing the point entirely, but hey.

It's not missing the point so much as saying that internet connectivity is key to their strategy. And because of that choice, Xbox the brand is going to take a beating. They probably knew this would cost them literally MILLIONS of sales. If they never announced any of this online check and complex reselling of game restrictions, they would have those sales. So they must be doing it to jump ahead to a position in the industry that doesn't even exist yet, at the cost of going to fast for a good many people.

Sure, gladly.

I will live up to my end, and I know just the avatar for you guys if you're wrong.

Er, I've stated above though that the avatar condition is not something I'm comfortable with. If I win, I won't ask you to switch avatars, and I'd like that to be true vice-versa.

No, that's clarifying the bet. Moving the goalpost is when you change some condition in a dishonest way.

The whole military angle is pretty much a media shit storm waiting to happen.

MS would do well to nip that in the bud pretty quickly - maybe offer hardware that doesn't require the check-in and whatnot for military bases?

The second they do they release an avenue for the console to be exploited. For their DRM to work it needs to check in every 24 hours to make sure every license is accounted for.

What I'd like to know is, why the Spanish Army can afford to give their troops internet access in places such as Afghanistan (my brother is out there now and pops up on FB now and then), but the US can't?

There is this security guard I always bump into at the Post Office. Casual gamer, always asking me stuff because he's not in the know.

Today he told me there is no way he his getting an Xbox One.

Was he a 360 only gamer? Because that just might be close to the last nail.

who? Explain.

Rachel Maddow is a progressive commentator on MSNBC. She's very well spoken, very politically critical, and very fact based when she goes at people.

Her making a tweet (god damn, I hate that word) about this is a huge deal from a mainstream media pick up. Not only that, but there's no way Fox is gonna let the liberal lesbian be the one standing up to MicroSoft for the troops.

So, yeah, it's kinda a big deal. We'll have to see who picks up on it, but the traction is getting fierce.

They should stop being in the military and move to a Xbox One compatible country, or just buy a 360. #dealwithit

Just buy a PS4

They can't. Pachter said it in an interview. They designed the Xbox so that it is dependent on that stuff.
For example if you play Halo and say "Xbox, play Fifa", it can instatntly switch to Fifa. Therefore the game has to be completely on the HDD, because it has to work without the disc inside the console.
So, if they paddle back and let you lend your games and play offline and stuff, people would just install their games on the HDD and give away the disc. Since the console isn't online MS can't do shit about it.

They would have to take away those "instant" features, but I don't think they want to do that.
It's all software, I'm pretty sure they can change the way it works.
Even with the "instant" games thing, how many games can you "copy" to the XBONe?

Or maybe you just have to hold your physical game so that the Kinect authenticate it. jk

Doesnt matter, you still lose. They are not going to outsell ps4 in US either. They arent even out preordering them. And no crying about lack of stock or some bs.

I had the same thought my friends that were in the dutch army and on tour in afghanistan also popped on skype and facebook.
Only downside was there internet usage was tracked just in case someone would leak critical information.
Maybe the US is just backward with internet from what i hear in OT is there are like 1 or 2 big ISP companies.
They have pay a lot for shitty bandwidth and still have caps?

Exactly what i was thinking of! What about marines! US MARINES WITHOUT US CONSOLE!

US MARINES + JAPANESE TECH!

World is coming to an end.

I can't believe it. Microsoft has virtually unified everyone who even remotely gives a fraction of a shit about videogames against them.

I'm waiting for Sony to donate a bunch of PS4's to the military to really stick it to MS

They should totally do this. If the troops are deeply entrenched in the Xbox camp then they might be unsure about making the jump to PlayStation, so Sony should get the ball rolling and get their console into the hands of service men and women ASAP. A bit of goodwill and taking a bit of a loss will only earn them good publicity and respect in this instance, and probably earn them coverage in the mainstream media. They really should capitalise on MS's bad decisions to make themselves out to be the good guys.

This sounds exactly like what an MS exec would say. Which is kind of missing the point entirely, but hey.

And it's been trotted out for everything. "People with slow internet? Not that many people. People with no internet? Insignificant. The military? Only a million people. College kids? Meh. People not in the initial 21 countries? They're not the core market."

After a while that adds up to most of the market. They could have announced a far more powerful 360, won E3 with that showing, slowly introduced digital downloads and its advantages to the masses, and continued to gain market share. Spending so much on exclusives is obviously a good idea and combining it with all of that would have been awesome. What they've done instead is bonkers.

College Students? What did they do to them now!? lol

To get a stable connection to PSN or XBL was a hugeee pain in the ass at my university. It was basically only doable by lan connection, and even then during peak study times you'd lag or DC like some shit. Most of my college carrier, my PS3 was offline except for very few times I'd connect it to download a patch or something. Same with most people who owned a 360. It was all about LAN and local co-op.

RE5 was seriously the highlight of my sophomore year. Me and my room mates had near infinite fun with that game.

CBoaT is clearly an insider, but he is occasionally wrong.

The only thing that comes to mind recently was the prince of Persia showing he said would be at the MS Confernece. He may have mistook the opening of the new halo teaser as a new PoP game. It's a long shot I know but if he's an insider, maybe he only got to see the start of the trailer and that was it.

Can normal people have this solution too, pls?
“Military personnel will be able to take their Xbox One and play their games with them without an issue as long as the game has been ‘activated’ once in the U.S. Your games go with you and play, no issues,” she says.

Time to visit your local army recruiting station.

Pretty OT, but are portables popular in the military? It strikes me as a lot more reasonable to bring a PSVita/3DS along with you than a giant console, though of course you can't play the best versions of Call of Duty on these platforms.

I've always actually found it a bit surprising that folks bring consoles off to Afghanistan (a GAFer posted a great Afghanistan view in the in the "Post your setup" thread) and such due to weight concerns, though I guess as long as you keep the weight down to a certain level maybe people don't care what you bring along with you. Ditch the socks, bring an xbox.

LOL. So basically deal with it.

This is ridiculous, although the military should keep Lanning Halo CE on Original Xboxes, because it is still the best Halo game, especially on LAN.

They really need to put a Disk check feature into the Xbone so you don't have to be online ever if you don't want to be, or in this case, can't be.

says right here they will have a workaround for them to play so long as game is activated once and no subsequent 24 hour check, they are just not giving details

How does that quote imply a workaround for the military?

I love the idea of Sony donating thousands of ps4 to troops.

"The official console of the us military". Maybe custom paint jobs for each branch?

Or worst case scenario: somebody told him PoP was coming to confirm he's CBoaT.

The thing that defenders of the always-online Xbone approach always fail to overlook that the PS4 is also an always-online machine. It just doesn't NEED to always be online.

You can leave the PS4 on its sleep state and it can still download updates and all that shit for your games while you're away. The Xbone requirement to be always online is PURELY for DRM purposes.
