Looking back, is there any particular reason why earlier consoles had a much lower power draw compared to modern consoles?

Starting with the PS360 generation, we saw power consumption at around 170 watts for the hd twins, the same was true for the current gen, and it seems next gen will be in the same ballpark.

The more Watts, the hotter the chips get. Cooling got more and more sophisticated on consumer devices with time and could transfer more heat away.
Good cooling also costs more money, which is important if you build a machine to a budget, like for a game console.
Chips also reliable support hotter temperatures now compared to 20 years ago.

.... in order for this huge router curved design console to look at home in your lounge room.... we replaced your whole lounge room.

Also we have a floating screen (cool!) that prevents the two groups of people at the coffee table from seeing each other... WTF!

No one claimed the Xbox would have MORE games at launch, just that games from across four generations will work and come with big visual and performance enhancements. The PS4 might have MORE games that will boot up but maybe a large chunk of them will have performance issues and zero improvements. Also the PS4 has some big well rated titles but then a ton of little shovelware games so ehh to each their own.
So when people were fear mongering that PS5 would only have 100 titles for BC, that wasn't them expecting Xbox to have more?

Curious

Because probably 95% of Xbox users would have a problem to tightening one screw. A screwdriver is not such an easy machine...

I mean, look at them just trying to handle a simple IQ test...

. You’ll need to use the PS Camera (for PS4), and the PS Camera adaptor (no purchase required), to use PS VR on PS5.

Man, I always try to not engage with you, but fuck u, seriously, read the fucking DAMN thing, FUD spreader ...

Isn't the tweet just verbatim from the article or am I not reading it right?

The other question there is also, once both consoles start to accumulate dust, which one is easier to clean.

Yeah how effective are the dust catchers in the PS5 and does it require a complete disassembly of XSX to get to the fan or will the whole lot slide out like in the DF assembly video.

But he's not wrong. Whether or not the took a "safer" approach aesthetically. There's something to be said of fitting that amount of custom hardware into such a compact form factor whilst running in near silence.

Yeah, that it's dumb to focus more on making it small than making it work well.

IIRC someone said the air is drawn in from the front on the PS5 vents and expelled out the rear of the console. So all the dust should be on the front on the outside of the PS5 rails, and just needs a vacuum down those rails with a nozzle.

Not sure about others, but my console bays on the TV cabinet always get dustier at the back of the console, and less os at the front, so even that seems like a really good design to not be pulling in dusty air from the rear of the console IMO

I don't think I've ever seen this much controversy over a single screw....one that will take all of a couple seconds to unscrew, then a few more seconds to reorient the stand. Literally about 10-15 seconds at most. Are people really that lazy nowadays?

Its just fake outrage.
The more petty the complains are the more you know someone did something good.

Wouldn't that void the warranty?

From the looks of the teardown video you can remove the fan covers without voiding the warranty. Unless I'm making a mistake there that is.

Maybe it voids the warranty but many liked to keep their consoles clean so will do it any way.

It looks like the only panel that comes off is the rear panel as seen in the DF video but as there will be many connectors and wires etc in the real console it might be a lot trickier to get to the fan to clean it.

Wait and see.

I would never open up a system if it voids a warranty. After the warranty is expired then I don't mind taking it apart. However with the PS5 I would never remove that heatsink due to the liquid metal underneath.

You are fine opening it up the point you can chance the SSD and clean the duty catchers.

More than that you will probably lose the warranty... if you look at the video you have a tape you need to break to go ahead and that is the limit of the warranty.

Are you saying the Xbox Series X doesn't "work well" and sacrificed that for a smaller form factor?

On what do you base this assertion?

Sacrifices are made no matter which direction you go. Doesn't mean the final hardware is a piece of crap but going larger does give it some advantages. Like the Xbox One was super quiet compared to the PS4 due to its much larger size and better cooling solution. If Sony went small with the PS5 they would have to use a smaller heatsink, smaller fan and possibly lower the clocks. If Microsoft went bigger they could have a better cooling solution and higher clocks.

There's advantages and disadvantages to each option.

I agree 100%.

I think Tom Warren's point, though he definitely was too aggressive with it, was that it's impressive the XsX runs well in spite of its size.

It's obvious that the PS5 went big to allow for hefty GPU clocks and to enhance just how quiet and cool it is. The PS4 Pro was loud and ran hot, so I think it's commendable they listened to feedback and went out if their way to design a console that corrected this.

By the looks of it going to the lengths of removing the heatsink shouldn't be needed as the dust catchers and maybe removing the fan to clean should be enough.

“Engineering brilliance doesnt require a screwdriver”...

Sony fanboys go on an unrelated sulk rampage about how to use a screwdriver.

PS5 literally cant stand on its on feet, it needs new feet screwed on... that is not “engineering brilliance” in any form.

Get over it and move on with your lives.

Also just speculating on my part I believe the PS5s SSD needed a more beefy cooling solution than the SSD in the Series X.

Sony could have went with a smaller console but it probably would have resulted in lower clocks, slower SSD and a noiser system. I believe based on the hardware they chose the PS5s size and cooling solution is the right choice.

Its unbelievable to me that someone would actually need a tutorial but I watched the video completely and the youtuber did a bang up job.
Respect 👨‍🔧

I work with screws all the time and it's very important to use the correct size. However it's pretty cheap to buy a set of screw drivers and I don't think anyone will struggle with this.

It's pretty easy to use a screw driver. Just make sure you use the correct size and don't apply too much force when putting the screw in. It really is that simple.

Small group of individuals that were just poking for fun, everyone knew Cerny said 100 worked in boost mode.

No, people have generally not expected Xbox to have more XBO games than PS5 had PS4 games.

If we're talking older generations then i guess sure?

Absolutly no-one said it was hard except for Sony fanboys, its just bad design ... the fact your all so precious about it is hilarious.

While I think calling any of this stuff "brilliance" is a stretch, I do think Sony could have easily gone with a solution of perfectly attaching the bases to the bottom and side, so that the transition could be made tool-less, but then it would go again the design aesthetic having the bases permanently attached to the device don't you? It would look a bit silly, don't you think? Sometimes, you have to sacrifice for beauty.

Well it's supposed to stabilize the system. Without the stand it would wobble alot. I mean you can always buy a faceplate that doesn't require a stand. It's not that difficult to do.

Lets all 100% agree... the design of either stand is not engineering brilliance... and move on with our lives lol

This is really a non issue entirely but this made my chuckle because some people WILL fuck this up and brick their system. Some people are that dumb.

I fully expect some people to buy the Series X and S drives and fuck it up too.

Maybe that's my teen retail years talking when I fixed electronics.
