Next-Gen PS5 & XSX |OT| Console tEch threaD

If you have a 4k TV that doesn't sound a decent upgrade.

The console is outputting 900p on some games (even without raytracing).

If you paid $500 for the mid-gen refresh, you aren't the target customer for the XSS to begin with. XSS is a low cost upgrade for X1/1S users that just want to keep playing the latest games but aren't all that concerned about resolution improvements from 1S (though the XSS runs a lot of games at higher res than the 1S could ever muster).

Dirt 5 on Sbox is 576p @ 120 Hz...basically standard definition. Like a PS2.
I think I've seen you bring up that number often and I don't know why you (and others) feel the need to cherry pick the lowest values when trying to dog on consoles lol. Same goes for people screenshotting lowest fps graphs.

That's the lowest bound in a dynamic res. It looks bad, yes, but it's rare and the 120hz mode is an option anyway. The PS5s lower bound is 900p which is what Xbox gets clowned on for running at when playing the 120 FPS Boosted One S titles...

According to VGCharts (iirc) the upper bound is 1080p and usually around 1080-720p. I think that's fine for a console targeting 1440 or 1080 screens typically..

Oh, that's very true.

Yo, DarkMage619 DarkMage619 why are we getting such horrible resolution at 120hz? What's the point of hyping this feature on XSS (that is done much better than PS5 according you) if it runs the game at a VHS like resolution, it's weird, why are you using this to point score exactly?

PS5DE seems to run it better. Plus has the 4k support and uncompromised next gen titles.

Don't get your hatred for the PS5DE at all, when offers superb value for money and seemingly more solid 120hz experiences as well.

Attractive option for gamers on a budget.

The Series S is fine if you are on a budget and are just getting it for kids or something, but when you start to factor in the extra costs that you might need (it's only got like 364 GB usable space, right?) it becomes less attractive.
You're fucked if you get more than one CoD game.

I don't think the console is weaker than the XSS though. It's probably some sort of technical issues with trying to upgrade the PS4 version for the PS5. Even Sonys 1st parties are only providing framerate boosts with their games. I haven't really seen any that provide resolution boosts to BC titles on the PS5.

Can we stop saying the PS5 is weaker than the XSS?

It's getting really annoying at this point.
Please point out where anyone said the PS5 was 'weaker' than anything. I clearly said the XSS the 'weaker' console has features the more expensive PS5 lacks. That is the interesting thing. The XSS is the worst right? It's holding the generation back! Yet despite that is punching above its weight and that's pretty cool.

As far as the technical issues with Biomutant and the Sniper game people had all sorts or explanations as to why the Xbox didn't do great with the launch cross gen titles. Bottlenecks and server blades were tossed out. I'm certain people have a good idea what is going on with certain PS5 games out of poor development teams.

So now your suggesting the PS5 is holding the gen back?

If you think a 2021 "next gen" console with sub-HD resolution is "not a problem" then I feel sorry for you.

The Xbox 360 could run games at higher resolution... 15 years ago.
Xbox 360 did at 120 fps?? The console warring nonsense is so fucking tiresome, damn. How is it a problem what an optional mode goes to at the very lowest in a dynamic resolution?

It's not a problem because you have other options if the low resolution bothers you. Again, it's great to have options :messenger_winking:

So far it seems to be 2 games with issues? I havent dug deeper into it and stayed out of the threads for obvious reasons....

Biomutant is one, Sniper Contracts 2 is another. I dont think both situations are similar but I saw the words tech difficulties in thread titles for both games.

Biomutant isnt delayed, but it has some kind of issue on PS5.
Biomutant is a BC title so far, there's no next gen version. What is it's resolution on PS4 Pro?

So talking about the tech and the BC capabilities.

Are there any BC games on tbe PS5 that get a resolution boost? I'm not talking about variable PS4 Pro resolution that hits the upper limits more often btw.

It could be an issue that BC has on the PS5. Then when a native version gets made they can increase the resolution past the PS4 Pros.

I don't think there has been, no. Only the upper bound stability like you mention.

Seems like it's an issue with BC on the PS5. Those two games tried to boost the resolution past the PS4 Pro and they ran into issues when they tried to do that through BC.

I'm really curious if anyone has an idea on why that might happen.

I know this is a hot take, but I believe that a console released in 2020 should be better in EVERY way than a console from 2005.

It's not an issue, it's just how hardware BC works. If the game has DRS, it can reach the upper bound more frequently using PS5 'PS4 Pro' profile, but it can't have higher resolution unless you make a native version.

It is an issue if the developer wants to target a higher resolution without making a native version. Microsoft must be doing something that allows them to do that. Which is neat BTW.

These are links for SoD3 and Fable trailers, made by Blur Studio.

Saying all trailers are outsourced is a hyperbole, I know, but considering these two cases, I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case for most of them.

For sure these were CGI. But the Halo Engine demo was specifically stated to be an engine showcase for their new engine tech. It would be a barefaced lie for that to be CGI too.

And the later Halo gameplay demo was far too awful to be CGI, lol.

There appears to be talk on games been delayed due to PS5 technical difficulties... Has anyone heard of this? Is it just Bollocks? 👍

Isn't it only one game?

Like I said in the other thread when you have these tiny dev teams trying to put out games on like a bajillion platforms (i.e. PS4/XB1/XB1S/XB1X/XSX/XSS/PS5 and PC) something has got to give.

There's really nothing more to it than that.

It can, like i said earlier YS IX is a proof of that. Maybe there are more games like that, but i know about only this one so far.

Uses DRS apparently on the Pro, so they just set the upper limit to 4k, so the PS5 reaches it in BC mode.
It didn't have native 4K but used something of a dynamic resolution scaler to get close. The extra power of the PS5 has allowed the game to charge past that.

YS IX received an update to increase resolution on PS5, meaning they had to alter original code to include specific one for PS5. Same case as Days Gone, TLOU2, Ghost of Tsushima, Ratchet & Clank and many others. In some ways, these updates created PS5 'native' versions, unlike crossgen games which are totally different versions.

IntentionalPun

Ask me about my wife's perfect butthole
Xbox BC is emulated, which means devs can make improvements without altering the original code, hence HDR and FPS boost.
What would Xbox One need emulation for on Xbox Series X?

The PowerPC was emulated for Xbox 360 -> Xbox One emulation, but I don't know what emulation would really be needed for Xbox One games on XSX.

Oh well you might not be aware but running games at higher framerates usually means lower resolutions. It IS done better than PS5 since in many cases that system can't run many games at 120fps AT ALL. On top of that we are talking about a console designed to run at lower resolutions in the first place so not sure what point you are trying to make pointing out the high framerate mode is lower resolution. Bernd Lauert Bernd Lauert said 'not a problem on a 1080p set'. I'll never understand people talking about beating something, games at 120fps , vs. nothing, significantly fewer games at a 120fps. I guess brand tribalism is strong in some.

What is with you guys and this hate talk? Who is hating the PS5DE? I bought the disc version. But I don't believe the PS5DE offers a better value than the XSS unless you only care about PlayStation 1st party titles. It has fewer features and fewer games at high framerates than a console that is CHEAPER. Biomutant runs at a HIGHER resolution than the PS5! That should never happen. That is not a good value proposition to me. This ignores things like Game pass which many here attack for odd reasons.

People can game on whatever device they choose but it is a fact that the PS5 runs fewer games at 120fps than the XSS. Excuses can be made but that is the truth. It is on Sony to improve the value proposition for their device just like it was on MS. They should earn our patronage.

Where did they get that info about DRS? There never been dynamic scaling in previous Falcom's games. And also i can't find a single source that can prove their claim about DRS. All i can find is that it 1080p like on base ps4, just with better performance. Maybe they are right, but i'm not convinced yet.

Really sounds like they are running the game the same way that they do on the PS4 Pro. Except the higher clocks allow it to reach 60FPs.

Basically the PS5 is just imitating a PS4 Pro at higher clocks. I'm not sure if it's doing something similar to emulation.
That is how BC works on PS5... it is not the first BC title to show that and people go crazy with the narrative lol

So since the PS5 can run games at 120hz, then I guess it's not lacking any features that the XSS has. So your claim is wrong, unless PS5, can't run any at all?

I'm guessing you mean PS5 is inferior as doesn't run as many games at 120hz? Ok, got that. The XSS can run more and to do it, sometimes, it needs to reach some very low numbers.. VHS like numbers. Hardly encouraging as games get more complex.

Looks to be the the more solid 120hz implementations, at better resolutions, are on the XSX and PS5/DE. Which doesn't surprise anyone to be fair.

But I don't believe the PS5DE offers a better value than the XSS unless you only care about PlayStation 1st party titles.

I think the paragraph wrote before puts another tick for the PS5DE. It seems to be offering the best value for money, especially for gamers on a budget, (especially if want better 120hz experiences), who want 4k gaming, who want all the next gen bells and whistles, and 100% uncompromised versions of games. They are the true next gen experiences after all, whole point of upgrading.

Biomutant runs at a HIGHER resolution than the PS5!
The PS4 version of Biomutant runs exactly like the PS4 version on a PS5? That is the definition of backwards compatibility, isn't it? What's the issue?

I guess brand tribalism is strong in some.
Because people are saying you are wrong?

It's a bit rich coming from you, using a hardly used feature in an attempt to point score and let's not forget:

  • You were the only supporter of the XBL Gold price hike on the forum.
  • You hid a broken XSX on here.
  • Was the number one supporter of the Kinect.
  • Said every single PS5 had coil whine.
  • State that developers are incompetent after they complain about the XSS.

But everyone else are the fanboys, I suppose. Strange.

How's that for brand tribalism.

Not sure how accurate that website is with its dynamic res claim, but there's a tweet saying it as well.

Has there been any tests run by VG/DF?

😂 I said the XSS is punching above its weight. You can't find any quote I've ever made about holding things back. No body thought the XSS would do ANYTHING better than the mighty PS5. Especially for less money. It's a positive XSS comment more than a negative PS5 comment. People talking about holding back the generation back were never serious people in the first place. The XSS is a well designed device.

No sadly, it has too small audience for this kind of analysis.

I should learn how to pixelcount image, this game particularly will be piece of cake if you know how, because seems like it doesn't have any kind of antialiasing.

Obviously you aren't implying that quality mode doesn't exist on the XSS, that would be very disingenuous of you.

Developers? Why aren't they serious people?

With a mentality like that we might as well bring back VHS.
The funny thing is that we are six months into this gen and we already have a 1080p game on PS5 in returnal. That's just the price you have to pay for 60 fps in an effects heavy shooter. To get this to run on a 4 tflops card, you are looking at resolutions below 720p.

I remember when the PS3 was eviscerated by DF and pretty much everyone on these boards for coming in below the standard 720p resolution way back in 2006 and 2007. Here we are in 2021, two gens later, and its being celebrated. We live in strange fucking times.

Developers? Why aren't they serious people?
Give me this quote of a main line developer stating the XSS is holding back this generation of gaming sir. If you can give their current gen only title using the consoles features that would be a bonus.

Say this with me.

The PS5 is a well designed device.
I think the PS5 is a nice console with some serious shortcomings. Only time will tell how those shortcomings are addressed as time goes on.
