Does it matter? What's important is that a new console gets good early momentum. Once that happens the rest follow.

People are sheep, a big reason PlayStation always sell over 100 million is party because everyone's friends are on there.

That was always the early winning post that got set. Especially around the times Sony and Microsoft would launch consoles in the same month, or time period (or in the 360 case launch aligned). I can't remember if it was used during the sega v Nintendo days ?

So weird to put numbers like that right after the end of the quarter, must be a bug, we shouldn't have data before early August.

This was likely a forecast that predates the launch, as just the Japan figure for shipped will be around 2 million with high sell-through and we know Circana has the launched pegged as 1.3M+ so selling just 500K the rest of the month would mean barely any stock for one of the biggest markets.
