please put an end to this Bolt/Phelps shit...

NOBODY CARES...They both broke records and they both swept their individual races.

Of course it is! I officially ate crow though, I thought he'd come in 2nd (after expecting 1st initially) and it didn't happen.

I think we still have a shot at the 4x100 due to our depth.

No mate. Just no.

It is a time trial event. Fastest. How you can propagate yourself through the water fastest. Fastest. F. A. S. T. E. S. T.

How you decide to swim should be irrelevant.

Shall we have skipping? Hopping? What about running backwards? Why is swimming treated differently?

Some days I prefer to skip down the road to catch my train. Should skipping be a sport? Maybe the moonwalk perhaps?

Athletics only has one of these ridiculous events, the walk. It’s just 1 medal. Swimming has built a mountain of superfluous medals from redundant strokes.

It's a race. Down the water. Fastest.

Including events because other countries would be rubbish at freestyle...this is no argument. Shall we ban track and field then? The Chinese are shit at that.

Shot vs. Javelin…are you serious? They are different objects. In swimming you don’t get any obstacles or different apparatus. You intentionally cripple your style.

No logical comeback to this at all.

Here's a logical comeback. 1. It's about speed, but it's also about speed in different disciplines. Throwing something is about throwing something as far as you can, but there's different disciplines - discus, javelin, shot-put and hammer. They are different events.

2. Different individuals are good at different strokes. Not everyone excels at freestyle and those who do would dominate the races, putting everyone out of a career. And children like to experiement to find what they're most good at - if they're told they can only swim freestyle, then they'll just say "fuck swimming". The amount of athletes would halve.

3. It would be very boring to watch. I hate watching freestyle. It bores me. The variety brings ratings.

You're talking out of your ass, and even though you profess the "logical argument", there's no less logic in mine than there is yours. In fact, here's an argument:

4. Without the other strokes swimming would be dead. Less athletes, less interest, less ratings, less money.

And that's all that matters chap - swimming needs these strokes, even though all you care about is what stroke is faster. Just because you can only swim freestyle, doesn't mean atheletes who specialise in other disciplines shouldn't get to compete. Remember this. If Swimming followed your rules, there would be no swimming. End of.

You have to be kidding me. Bolt has won two gold medals and all of a sudden he's better or has made a bigger impact than the guy that won 8? Give me a break...
Plus, isn't Bolt only in 3 events? 100, 200, 4x100 relay? Phelps has 250% more gold medals than Bolt even has events...

LOL. He broke a record previously believed would stand for 30 years. I think they've both done amazingly well. Bolt for his superhuman performances.. Phelps for his Marathon run of events. Now stfu with the tears everyone

The man just broke the 100m and 200m WRs within the span of a few days. The last athlete to even get gold on both of those events was Carl Lewis when I was still shitting in my nappy. He is already a legend of the track & field, if Jamaica wins the 4 x 100m relay it'll just be icing on the cake.

Bolt won gold in all events he competed in (will probably win gold in the 4X100 too), same as Phelps. Bolt doesn't have the luxury of having a ton of redundant medal opportunities like Phelps to pad his medal count.

Setting new WR's in the 100m and 200m is, imo, a much bigger accomplishment than anything a swimmer can ever do.

Bolt > Phelps

Discuss

please don't. But honestly, Usain blew me away... Phelps is insanely good but he didn't leave my mouth agape. Whatever, they're both incredible.

Took the words right out of my mouth. His 100m was amazing, but breaking the 200m WR just confirmed it for me.

And lol @ sp0rsk calling me anti-American. Go back to my list of 4 hopes that I posted in this thread before the Olympics started. Phelps winning all 8 was on my list.

Great opinion. So you don't understand swimming. Congrats on showing that. Lets ditch all the unnecessary extra distance races in racing too. Marathon? Who needs it? 200m? 400m? Meh. If you can't win the 100m then why should you be given a further distance?

Wow, that made me realize how awesome Michael Johnson's record was. I rightfully guessed martina would get second, i just thought Dix would get the bronze. As for the americans, they could all have run 19'70, but instead chose the olympics to do a 19'95.

And Sheena Tosta in the other race, just completely ran out of gas. Tiffany Ross... cramps or hurdles, wtf?

U.S track and fail team needs some retooling? are they well paid? what's happening? can't BALCO give them a hand?

Star and Tornado-class sailing (good medal chance in Star, small medal chance in Tornado), Kayaking (500/1000m, same guy in each, blew the opposition away in the heats), we're now up to a third guaranteed boxing bronze. After our women in the open water, I think there's a chance of David Davies challenging for a medal in that, too. On the downside, I don't really rate our 4x100 men's chances of defending given the current 100m field.

My huge outside massively optimistic bet: Jade Johnson getting something.

Thanks :)

I'm not even going to engage in any more dialogue with you (or any other Australian for that matter) because... fuck it, I'm not even going to explain.

The fact that Americans on here are complaining about the typical Australian arrogance and poor attitude shows there's a big problem in the Australian psyche that isn't just limited to the "good natured attack" on Britain.

Incidentally, while everyone's playing up the Phelps achievements, I've heard no mention of what the women's equivalent record is. Anyone know?

And given the bickering going on, I clearly have to say Hoy > Phelps + Bolt. Not that I actually think that, I'm just feeling left out.

I'd missed out Modern Pentathlon, a sport I love just because the disciplines involved get really weird (Equestrian, shooting *and* athletics? Gloriously bizarre, it's like the Posh Medley). To be honest, I don't know if we've all that much potential there, but I know we've won in the past.

Unexpected bronze for us in that hurdles, too.

Redgrave is a better pick than Hoy - golds at 5 successive Olympics, and all that. Shows strength and consistency more than any number of golds in the same event does ;-)

But it's a stupid argument any way.

Funny, at the same time on the last olympics, the U.S had the same 13 medals on track and field (26 of 47 events). only difference was 4 golds instead of 3. So there is still some hope for a respectable result.

Maybe it just says more about the maturity of the sport than much else. Anyway i'm not going to argue about the overrated Phelps again. Phelps most winningest athlete yay blah etc.

Well, Bolt's achievements have been done before...Phelp's haven't been until now. Bigger significance? Pretty obvious.

If swimmers have redundant opportunities to win extra medals, why hasn't anybody else won 8 before? Oh, because it's not that easy, I guess. Use your brains, son.

Bolt > Phelp

I don't want to explain it because I'm not going to change my mind.

But if you want to know it's because 100m is the single most important competition in term of human pushing to the physical limit. I don't care if you can jump 5 meters with a pole or get 10.0 from all 10 judges in water synchronize dancing, I don't care. They don't mean anything to me except being part of the penis contest amount nations.

Of course Bolt is better than some fictional name you brought out of nowhere.
