This is taking way too long.. =\

Prediction? I predict the GREATEST OFFSEASON IN THE HISTORY OF SPORT.

Just think about the trades and free agents! All clubs being in the hunt to sign top talent instead of the usual 6 or 7 teams! Older players retiring, surprises as the younger guys who played last year in the AHL take a big step in their development (I say right now Dany Heatley wins the Art Ross), it's going to rule. :D

It sucks they had to shut down for a full year but the corrections were badly needed and the NHL itself is finally willing to significantly change the rules in order to free up play.

Matt Stajan > all

Call me when (and ONLY WHEN) it's completed, delivered, and signed on the dotted line. My heart can't take the abuse. :|

If you mean Stajan > the rest of the Leafs after they're forced to trade or release half the team to support Belfour, McCabe and Nolan's salaries against the cap... yeah I can see it too. Opening night, it'll be Sundin centering the #1 line with Robert Earl and Jeremy Williams. :D

Nah

Players will take pay cuts to play in a city where they won't get laughed at

I hope the Flames can keep their players. I'm done with hockey if we lose Iginla or Kipper. Sucks that this lockout happened right after our big post-season run.

At least the Lightning didn't get to raise a banner yet. :lol

Pretty sure Jarome's on lockdown and the rest of our squad is gonna be mostly the same. Luckily we've raised good grittty cheap home grown talent and I can't fukin wait.

One thing to watch for is a clause that only prevents a single player from making more than 20% of the salary cap

Players such as Jagr and Yashin already make more than that much, whats gonna happen to them lol

Well they got to keep the Cup for an extra year.

Could have been Calgary if they scored in overtime in Game 6.

I like opening old wounds! :)

Anyways, useless Lewis is out and Babcock is in for the Wings!

I really wasn't look forward to the Wings future as I hated and despised Lewis.

Its going to be strange watching teams I actually like sign some free agents, I can't wait to see how next season plays out. I also want to see how this draft plays out, I've already accepted that no team I like will most likely get Crosby, but crazier things have happened.

Even after the 24% rollback and the many expiring contract?

Yagr, Tkachuk, Lindstrom and Yashin's contracts are all over 20% after rockbacks.

I'm hoping Canucks can re-sign most of their guys for atleast one more year.

I'd like to see Crosby go to LA or Edmonton so I'd get to see him a lot. I just don't want him to end up on a defensive team or a team that has had loads of success lately like Detroit or Colarado.

Theres rumours of 2way arbitration in the deal.
The players are just getting bitchslapped right now. Its starting to get sad. Im almost starting to wonder if the players will vote this deal down.

Everybody compares the Leafs to the Yankees. Remember what happened after the baseball strike? The Yanks won 3 or 4 World Series. Could the same thing happen to the Leafs? I can only hope so!

Anyone who's followed my posts on this knows I've been anti-owner (though not neccessarily pro-union) for most of the way. But the whining from some of the players about Goodenow is simply embarassing. WAAAHHH HE BRAINWASHED ME, I WANT HIS HEAD ON A PLATTER. Shut the fuck up. Everybody knew what the deal was five years ago, and everybody said how fucking stupid it was. Instead of saying something a year ago, you kept your mouth shut like the rest of the sheep and towed silly PR lines like "we'll never accept a salary cap" and "we'll sit out two years if we have to" or "I'd rather never play again then accept a salary cap". You gambled, and you lost. Deal with it.

Thankfully the new deal will give retired players a huge boost in income...about time they looked after their own.

hadn't the Yankees won more recently than the 60s?

have the Yankees been crap on ice since the start of the expansion era?

SIT ON IT LEAFY!!

I think it is a completely understandable expectation- nay, requirement that all Leafs fans assume.. expect the Leafs to win the cup 3 or 4 times within the next decade.

Doug Gilmour will come back and they'll win six in a row

The only reason why the Yankes have won is because the MLB system is completely broken and unfair.

Once this thing is over we wont have that anymore in the NHL so the Leafs will actually to *GASP* use their brain and own talent to win instead of their money. Good times. I almost feel like starting a Gary Bettman appreciation thread (dont worry I wont)

Jim Rome says that the NHL has bought a full page ad in the NYT thanking the fans. Rumour is it will be in Thursdays paper.

If this really is a reset button I'm gonna be pissed if the Devils come out sucking. If they lose Brodeur I will be so fucking upset.

Meanwhile, do we need an official Canucks damage control thread? With Bert in limbo and lots of players to sign, my concern can only grow. I don't know if I could stand going back to the way things were in the Messier era. -_-;

Nothing would make my day like Naslund leaving Vancouver. Oh how wonderful it would be :D

Bertuzzi is a turd. Did he even score 20 last year? I dont think so. The guy is a 60 point player who had a couple freak seasons of chemistry. I'm just looking at his stats now... the year he has 97 points he was a +2?? Christ.

Watch him get shipped off and turn into the 25 goal scorer he is.

Bwahahah, Messier Era. It's funny how quick everyone forget about that, fans and non-fans of the Canucks just sort of pretended like the Moose hadn't even been there the second he bailed. It was such a weird situation the way all the big hopes just vanished and then Mess did a ninja quality fadeout back home to the Rangers... who immediately tanked even harder than they had been. Coincidence?

At least during the Flames rough patch (usually called "the 90's... and most of the 2000's too") you could smell the stench of their imminent failure during the preseason so they never really let you down. Every year they'd draft guys that had THN going 'huh... Flames went off the board there' and then they'd whip up a pair of 10 game losing streaks in November to make sure *everyone* knew they weren't going to amount to shit. If your team is going to blow, all I ask is that you can tell a mile away and get your jaded on early. None of that shockingly bad season that comes out of nowhere nonsense. Leave that to the fans of the Blues or Sharks a few years back when they would be pre-season favourites to win their division and then they'd flameout and miss the playoffs. That's gotta really, really hurt.

okay im gonna try watching hockey when it starts back up, which team should i root for.
It's a tough call, the landscape will have changed so much it's conceivable that more than a few of the traditionally elite teams will have a lot of trouble maintaining past success. Being a brand new fan to the sport is pretty much the only time you're allowed to choose a successful team you have no obvious connection to as "your" team and get away with it, if you're into that whole 'cheering for a team that can actually reward you with success' bullshit. If so, the easy old pick would be the Avalanche: of course picking them as a team means you're a shameless front running charlie and also signs you up to cheer for the Yankees, Patriots and Real Madrid.

Where do you live? Just pick the nearest team to you geographically (within reason, if you live in like north-east Tenneessee no one is going to force you to cheer for the Hurricanes, that's just cruel and pointless).

Well at least that way he wont have trouble finding tickets

Like I've said before, the Leafs will start signing free agents to $1 million a year contracts with Leafs TV offering them a $5-million contract for a TV special. :D

That's the truth man. Or if Calgary would have played like they cared for the first two periods of game 7. They just looked so tired until midway through the 3rd. Then it was awesome. But too little too late.

Thank god the Flames played so well in the third period of game 7, because the first half of the game they were so very brutal that it would have left a bad impression of the whole series and detracted from an amazing run.

Mainly though, I think of Martin "Eliminator" Gelinas almost winning it all in the last few minutes of regulation in Game 6. God. *doubles over as if punched in stomach*

:lol :lol :lol Messier's last eight years simply proved that he's BY FAR the most overrated "leader" in the history of professional sports. He couldn't even lead a camel to water.

He had 60 points in 69 games (and was +21) in his last season. All oldschool GA hockey fans know you're pretty stupid when it comes to the sport of hockey, so I don't need to detail how ridiculously stupid saying he had a couple freak seasons of chemistry because he had one average season which was marred by a suspension. It's just assumed with most Oiler fans on this board. :)

Every team will fucking suck this year with the roster they have. There's next to no point in making any predictions, save for the criteria of what top tier/veteran players will almost surely be bought out.
