Overwatch |OT2| A New Low in Unlocking and Microtransaction Systems

Status
Not open for further replies.
Just hit 9 and I've gotten 3 legendary skins: Nevermore Reaper, Stunt Driver Soldier 76, and Ra floaty monk guy. Too bad the only guy I get to play is Lucio (why you no heal, randoms).

So if you all had to make a tier list right now, what would you all make it?

It would all be personal experience, but I would like to hear some thought on it

Top: McCree, Lucio
High: Rein, Widow
Everyone else: Everyone else
Bottom: D.Va

Top four are staples in every game and are always safe picks and always useful if they play well. Winston and Zarya are very strong too.

Whoa, this is wildly different than what I've seen. I wonder if it's a console vs. PC thing? I see tons of Roadhogs, that one being so low strikes me as especially odd.

Blizzard really needs to fix Matchmaking...50% w/l rate is bullshit. Every time time I win.. im guaranteed to get grouped with noobs the next game.

From a pub perspective...

Escort/Hybrid/Assault:
S: Reinardt, McCree, Mercy, Lucio, Widowmaker
A: Bastion, Torbjorn, Junkrat, Soldier, Symmetra, Tracer
B: Zarya, Winston, Roadhog, Genji, Reaper, Pharah
C: Zenyatta, Hanzo, Mei, DVa

Control:
S: Lucio, McCree, Roadhog
A: Winston, Genji, Reaper, Pharah, Junkrat, Soldier, Tracer, Mercy, Zarya, Widowmaker
B: Zenyatta, Bastion, Mei, DVa, Hanzo, Reinhardt
C: Symmetra, Torbjorn

Lots of caveats like Symmetra is obviously not A tier on the attacker team and Reinhardt is only S for attacker teams.

I was gonna say before the edit, Symmetra is like in 2 entirely separate tiers depending on whether you're attacking or defending.

She's got her good control maps, too. Dynamite on Night Market.

Actually, it's... pretty much just Night Market, now that I think about it. Fair enough.

Yeah, people need to learn to actually defend the point and not running off on their own like it's team deathmatch. There are actually objectives to follow in this game!

Lucio's average pick rate is not significantly different from McCree's (compare them to the next most common pick), and he gets most of it from being picked excessively on King of the Hill maps. McCree suffers on King of the Hill, but he dominates both offense and defense on capture and payload maps. Lucio can be confidently said to be dominant in KotH, but McCree is pretty clearly the best hero in the game if people are picking him more than 100% of the time in every situation other than King of the Hill.

The real difference though is that Lucio is one of three legit healers and you pretty much need one of those three in every team. Even if you need "attackers", you have six options and realistically Hanzo and Junkrat could also be classed as offensive IMO but fit just fine where they are. They do good damage. So that kinda skews those results IMO.

It says "Competitive" overwatch, so presumably pro players in tournaments

I really really need more XB1 people to play with. Add me, folks. GT = psyfi. Shoot me a message (on here or XBL) so I know who you are!
We've played. :)

Are you going to be on tonight? I'm thinking of hopping on a for at least a few games in the next 15 minutes or so.

There's one Ilios map that Symmetra's really good on. The one where the point is in the building on the cliff with the open sides. Her and Winston work super well there together.

I've never tried her on Night Market. She's my most narrow hero and I don't even consider using her outside of defense and only for the first point.

I guess it could work but really, why wouldn't I just pick Lucio/Pharah to knock people off the stage?

So I was taking a day off from Overwatch today because I've been pretty busy and sometimes I just need a break from playing games, and I was catching up on some Overwatch community content. Saw the honest trailer, got a couple chuckles out of it. Anyways I came across a Unit Lost video who I've watched a couple videos of and they had one talking about a Kotaku article about how Kotaku ranked characters and I remember reading it and laughing, but in this video the guy is just railing on it and he's really upset and I don't get it. As far as I can tell the kotaku list is an ongoing gag making fun of top "n" lists and then I was reading the comments on the video and it was full of hate towards Kotaku and I'm just thinking to myself, "I thought the community for this game was better than this?" Everyone here on GAF in this thread has been super cool. So what's the deal? Did I just take a wrong turn somewhere and see the bad part of the community or was I just blind to some of this vitriol?

I don't agree with you about Hanzo and Junkrat, the difference with defenders and attackers is that they require enemies to walk into their space / sightlines, and can't aggressively push anywhere near as successfully as attackers. So they are not the the same as other offensive options in that regard.

Problem with that is that the attackers are also great area denial threats in themselves. So they fit the role of both attackers and defenders, crushing tanks and others as they push onto the defended area, while being versatile enough to be successful aggressively, pushing through and initiating close and mid range engagements.

Finally tried Winston and it's pretty fun. Leaping to the back of their line and picking off their squishy heroes then running away is hilarious.

Are you sure? Not unintentionally by one on your team?

When you try to ghost form away as reaper and you can't seem to move backwards... until you see your teammei-t's wall behind you.

this game seems way better on PC, amirite?

However, I've never been good at PC shooters nor do I have a good PC setup. I am good at console shooters though, is it worth getting this game for Xbox?

This person gets it^

Agree completely. I'm only really good with about 2-3 characters. Even though a Bastion is kicking our ass, I couldn't really do shit as Genji cause I probably wouldn't even be able to get close to him.

Ideally you'd know how to play some characters very well and have enough understanding of a few other characters so that you can use them when required. Usually if the team is calling for a specific character to be used, it's because they're the hard counter to whatever the opposing team has. In that situation, you just have to be good enough at the character to do specifically what they're made for. I'm not a good Genji but I can also least swap to him for a life to take out a Bastion if need be and then go back to whatever character I like once the team has pushed ahead.

But naturally you can't reasonably expect this of the random players you were paired against, and you can't expect everyone to know how to use ever character. I can't do shit as a Widowmaker, personally.

Mei being last makes me sad. She's so good.

I will say I don't think Mei is that bad. McCree and Lucio being the two top characters is going to make Mei look really bad because she doesn't do that well against either. Mei is also just, you know, tactical, and I wouldn't be surprised if it took a while for competitive to figure her out. Lee Sin wasn't always the best jungler in the game either.

Symmetra is more of a snowbally character in those maps to me. While you can get clutch knock off kills, once you get control of the point and wait for the next wave from the other team the turrets just make everything more annoying to wrestle the point back. The teleporter is also nice here since the other team wants to be getting near and fighting for the point, not tele hunting...but if they leave it up it's hard to get momentum back.

If that's where you'd enjoy the game most, yes.

Though it does have a few extra things on PC - leaving games as a group is probably the biggest difference.

And is it just me or does that Lunar symbol look like a pokeball? Def picking up a couple shirts.

This is competitive play, not normal play. Obviously us plebes will play whoever we want and it won't make much difference, although you do see a lot of McCrees and Lucios.

I don't understand what metrics they're using for "competitive play". Official ranked isn't available yet and I'm not aware of any official tournament scene.

In competitive he's basically someone that the other team is able to farm their ult off of because of his health pool.

There have been a lot of tournaments, even through beta. There was even one last weekend sponsored by Dolby with a people from Blizz e-sports in attendance.

Then they aren't marketing it very well. Haven't seen anything from Blizz at all about officially sanctioned tourneys.
