Persona 5 Review Thread

Zelda will probably win the most, but P5/Nioh/Nier/Horizon/RDR2/Odyssey/SoW will all get at least scattered awards, and maybe even a good chunk of them. There's also probably 1 or 2 annual/semi-annual franchises that will have unusually strong entries this year and end up competing.

This is going to be a hell of a year.
Aye.

I too think that Zelda will probably win the most overall, but even then it's not necessarily a guarantee.

Look at what happened in 2014 with Super Smash Bros and Bayonetta 2 or even Dark Souls 2, the three best rated games of the year...

If RDR2 releases, it might give it a good run for its money, but I also think that multiple other titles will, including Nioh, Nier, P5, Horizon Zero Dawn, The Lost Legacy and perhaps a few others even.

Super close to a 95 (though we still have some lower reviews yet to be added which will bring it down a notch).

How the hell is World of Goo so high? Got that for free with my Wii and didn't even find it fun.

So I've never played a Persona game before, but these reviews are making me interested in the game. A couple questions first.

1. Is it true that if you mainline the game's story, it'll take 100 hours?

2. Does the game have an over world?

3. Are there random battles?

4. Is most of the story reading like in Zelda or voiced like most games today?

1. 80-100 probably.
2. Yes, it's Tokyo. You go into dungeons from different points.
3.No
4. Anything major is voiced, lot of side things aren't.

World of Goo was fun IMO, but more importantly, it was one of the early indie success stories back when we were going from bite sized arcade style games for $5-10 to more varied offerings. It had interesting physics-based sandbox puzzles, good music, and atmosphere back when those things were novel. Now a million games offer those things, so World of Goo probably wouldn't stand out as much.

1 - Yes but I think 80 might be a safer bet depending on how well you maximize your time.

2 - Kinda. You have a town / city you spend a lot of time in doing day to day stuff as well as a lot of story stuff. The spit works you got the town for the school / real world stuff and then you go into dungeons for the JRPG battling stuff which is corridors and levels.

3 - You see enemies pre battle and can avoid them or sneak up on them for a advantage at the start of battle

4 - Mostly voiced with some text only bits for less important things.

1. It's way shorter if you aren't a completionist. Only 70-80h

2. It is a zone based game. It is a neighborhood game. You'll be glad that the points of interest are close together.

3. Initiation is deterministic skill based mob composition is random.

4. Hours of voice acting but it isn't completely voiced.

1. it depends on how you play. It's a bit longer than your typical JRPG and average is probably around 70~80 hours I guess? I usually play slow and it took me 142 hours to beat it.

2. overworld in a sense of PS1-era world map where you freely move around? No. It has a map where you can select cursor to go to places you want to go.

3. no it has symbol encounter

4. Lot of main story stuff is voiced, although not all. Most of side stuff are not voiced.

Thanks for the responses. The length is kinda scaring me. RPGs I typically like are 30-50 hours max.

Also what is a dungeon? Like is there a comparison it to them in anything in Horizon Zero Dawn or The Witcher 3?

Love Persona and everyone is free to do with their money what they want but I can't help it unless you want to support Atlus I don't think there's a reason to buy those DLC they're bad value. Especially when you consider how likely a Persona 5 Crimson or what not edition will be that will include all of it and more.
But then I'm def not one to talk about that shit xD I bought FE and SMT dlc. Those are pretty atrocious too to be honest. :p

It's an area with a specific theme attached to it where most of the fighting happens.

Imagine a building, with different rooms and corridors, puzzles and enemies doing patrols. At the end of said dungeon there is a room with a boss fight.

There is a casino inspired dungeon at the very beginning, for example.

Does this help?

Is Persona 5 PS3 version even going to be on the PSN store? I only see the PS4 version right now.

Ugh, I don't want to hunt a disc.

EDIT: Nevermind, apparently atlus confirmed it will be on PSN on launch day.

I haven't even finished Zelda, but I've waited too long for this game to wait! Those reviews are great.

It's not good enough? Hmm... Better graphics, better story, better gameplay than any of those games. I don't see nothing till RDR2 contending with those categories.

We don't know anything about RDR2 yet, we don't even know if it will be released this year.

Every time Zelda is mentioned it comes along with the downplaying of another game and I seriously don't get it.

I get it though, might be because it's the best rated game this generation and with sixty 100-scores, probably the most critically acclaimed game of all time.

P5 is a great game but it's not clicking with everyone like Zelda did, is that bad? I don't think so, P5 wasn't designed to appeal to literally everyone and their mother. It's a game that takes pride in what it is and that makes me proud, its a lot like Nier in that regard, pushing the genre further to its limits, yet staying true to its roots.

Is it April 4 yet?

Can't focus on work and cant focus on other games either.

I'll have to wait a little bit longer even, as I imported the UK version, was an amazing deal though that is worth the wait I guess...

The game was like Tamagotchi a one hit wonder, it appeared as quickly as it disappeared. I didn't find it very entertaining either but it had the right concept and worked well at that time.

Seriously? That's a really shitty move, imo unacceptable.
Come on Japan, sharing videos and screens is actually free promotion. A visually beautiful and super stylish game like Persona 5 can only profit from this.

That really sucks about sharing pictures. A 100 hour game should have plenty of nonspoiler content that can be shared.

The spoiler thing is pretty much just a pretext. Many Japanese studios/publishers still find the idea of freely sharing their copyrighted content suspect. Japanese studios also like to have fat watermarks on their PS4 share screens. Completely blocking everything goes a bit too far though.

Seriously, can't play anything and get into it. All I can think of is Persona 5.

Are you done Horizon? I had a blast platinuming that.

On the other hand I just cant get into Nier Automata or Zelda BotW.

People are making Zelda become that guy nobody wants to hangout with cause he brags all the time, but does only cause he picks up the tab. lol

Every time Zelda is mentioned it comes along with the downplaying of another game and I seriously don't get it. Plus Persona 5 will get some GOTY awards, it's not getting 9's and 10's for nothing.

Edit: seriously tho, talking goty, it's more contenders this year. Zelda, Horizon, P5, and others personal favorite. It'll be hard for any one game.

Horizon has a lot of technical polish, but aside from the incredible combat and beautiful open world it's AAA bland as hell. I think it will be on the list, probably top five, but other games will charm more people.

It's definitely not good enough to hit the top spot.

I've not played Zelda, I'm basing my guess on the response it's had. I honestly can't see another game landing like this did, not this year.

Perfect! I'm going to do so much listening to podcast now about P5. The only thing stopping me from buying is the length. After 50 hours I always lose interest in any game.

Definitely going for those Ann(e)-don't fight me about this, and Makoto themes the second they unlock. Probably some of my favorite female Persona character designs since Mitsuru and Yuko

Game is great, and came out before there were a lot of high profile indie games. It has a ton of charm for a puzzle game. Well for any game actually, but it being a puzzle game makes it more impressive. There also weren't that many great non-Nintendo games for the Wii, so maybe the good ones stood out more.

Yeah this was disappointing to say the least. Don't understand the strategy because that's quite late. Don't see many buying at launch not being done by then.

The strategy is clearly them wanting people to buy outfits, instead of getting them for free. Notice how all of the paid stuff will be available within a month of the game's release.

Atlus going to be Atlus I guess. Can only see myself buying 3-4 costumes and no persona summons dlc by the end of it. Guess I will delay new game plus until June/July.

How is normal difficulty in the game?
I saw there's a new challange mode releasing on the 4th and was wondering if it's worth going for if normal is too cheesy. Any details?
