Lincoln was a political genius. His efforts to win the Republican nomination in 1860 showed some of the strongest political mastery of anyone in American history. He did state some strange opinions (such as the deportation of freed slaves) prior to taking the office of President, but you have to realize that he was a politician in the swing state of Illinois so he had to walk a very tight line. If he had gone to say that he was opposed to all slavery and wanted it removed in the current slave states, he would have faded away in Illinois politics almost instantly and it's likely that our history would be very different. Ultimately, it's his actions that matter and that have a lasting impression. He guided the nation through an absolutely horrible war, won, and fought through the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment, which is far more important than any position he had as a state politician.

oh, i'm not downplaying his contributions or what he accomplished as president, just the actual history of him, and what he did, in relation to the current incarnation of the GOP

I agree with you completely. It's hilarious to see them champion him as this embodiment of modern Republican ideals, when Republicans in 1860 were the party that championed government intervention in the economy, massive infrastructure investment, and open immigration policy.

yeah, this is because we have universal healthcare for the most expensive group of people. Poor and elderly. That and prescriptions.

i mean, for all the rhetoric given to Obama killing the constitution, i find it humorous, and slightly telling (telling that they are dumb as a box of rocks) that they then turn around and proudly espouse Lincoln as their own... the man who, you know, actually did trample on the constitution

What's the worse way that Lincoln trampled on the constitution?

As probably the greatest executive power overreach in the US's history showed, following the letter of the law and nothing else is not the greatest way to run a country.

Obama NLRB recess appointments unconstitutional

Looks like this is probably headed to the supreme court.
Good thing Harry Reid fixed the fil... oh... never mind...

Would be nice if he actually allowed the Senate to recess, rather than letting McConnell run the pro-forma sessions. That was the only reason Obama had to appoint people the way he did. Sigh.

It will be a bit of a clusterfuck if the decisions they made really are invalidated. The CPFB has been doing good work.

They are?
It fly smack in the face of their "real conservatives opposed Bush II" narrative.
Or are we back to the "decider in chief best president ever" phase?

You expect consistency? They are just happy that

A) their narrative of Obama as divider has support
B) they can make a false equivalency to W
C) their propaganda effort has been successful

Hey PoliGaf,

I've been watching a lot of Rand Paul speeches on his YouTube channel lately and frankly I love almost all of his ideas. I think he's the candidate the GOP needs to be relevant again.

Any reasons why gaffers don't like him? Whats the general consensus?

And what are the chances he runs in 2016?

Good news out of Virginia

http://livewire.talkingpointsmemo.c...-ralph-smith-r-opposes-electoral-vote?ref=fpb
Virginia State Sen. Ralph Smith (R) has come out against a proposal to apportion electoral votes in the state by Congressional district, warning it could set off a chain reaction of similar schemes around the country. Smith sits on the closely divided Privileges and Elections Committee that is examining the bill, meaning his opposition likely ensures the proposal doesn't reach the floor for a vote.

“What if all states got to skewering it to their advantage?" Smith told the Roanoke Times in explaining his decision. He added that he would only consider a shift in Virginia's electoral vote rules "if every state does it that way."

Hopefully this kills it for good.

They're not really mentioning anything but the fact that Obama is the most divisive president. The only numbers they're putting up are 86% and 10%.

Whenever I see the guy speak I always get the impression he has a legit learning difficulty or something. He's like a ten year old.

Edit: I get it's apt when you consider his ideas and grasp of reality.

Why do you that? Just because of the way he speaks? Or what he says?

Well, this sucks.

Just found out one of my cousins just died. Makes it even worse considering my mom spoke to him just yesterday and he said he was perfectly fine.

This has not been my week. :(

I tend to get that impression from most libertarians and tea partiers. The fact that he seems to be a combination of the both of those things seems to be no coincidence, then.

Zero chance he runs.

His ideas sound nice, as did his fathers, but they wouldn't ever work in practice.

I could see him running, like his father did, but there's zero chance he wins.

yeah, he's gotta carry on the R. Paul moneymaking legacy of getting money for nothing every 4 years. Zero chance he'd be anything in the GOP, and anyone who says Benghazi was the worst thing since 9/11 deserves to be laughed out of the room.

This court ruling seems to invalidate nearly every recess appointment ever made (since they aren't usually made due to vacancies arising during recess)

Hasn't Rand already said he'll run in 2016? He has nothing to lose: he'll keep his seat easily, he'll attract some of his father's campaign folk, etc. His father's campaigns have been the second most impressive online machine behind Obama's, and Rand is smart enough to take advantage of it while the rest of the GOP dwells in the 20th century.

His verbal smack down of Christie struck me as a blatant admission that he'll be running and try to make 2016 the 1964 of our time.

Paleocons loathe Lincoln and consider him to be one of history's worst villains. The "Party of Lincoln" motto is mostly embraced by neoconservatives (who endorsed Pres. Bush's legal approach to terrorist detainees by invoking Lincoln) and in the past by northern Rockefeller Republicans who were pro-civil rights during the 50s and 60s.
