So the CBO report esentially says raising the minimum wage is good for poverty but bad for the economy, so don't raise it during a recession unless you can create half a million new jobs. Not an easy task for a liberal president, huh?

It's not like the republicans are doing anything to actively create jobs.

Not sure how these aren't considered interlinked.

Similar to people taking Obama to task for focusing on healthcare reform instead of "the economy." Because sure, people going bankrupt or taking on big debt for treatment doesn't have a drag effect on the economy at all.

Who's the hippie-looking dude?

Some reality show actor that became popular with Republicans for comparing gay marriage to bestiality and saying black people were happier before becoming enslaved by civil rights and welfare.

How did I miss this earlier in the month

By the way, how the fuck do you spend over 5,000 dollars at a restaurant?

I don't care how successful I get, I'd still rather go to a TGI Friday's.

That CBO report is pretty ugly. Killing 500k jobs by executive order will just be another obstacle for vulnerable dem house/senate candidates.

But isn't Irrational Games supposed to be an American success story that Republicans told us will happen to us if we work hard enough and bootstraps, etc?

Ken Levine screwing everyone at Irrational over to pursue his own dreams is the American success story.

Isn't Ken entitled to the sweat of his brow?

By the way, how the fuck do you spend over 5,000 dollars at a restaurant?

Yeah I'd take Five Guys or Steak n Shake over any overpriced DC steakhouse any day.

Ruths Chris / Flemings / Morton's is really good for a special occasion. Food alone shouldn't run a person over $100 unless you're gorging. Steak $50, appetizer 10-15, side dish 10-15 and desert 10-15. For that group to run up a 5k bill, a ton of wine (high priced wine at that) had to be purchased.

Thay is somewhat indicative of another issue--people only see growth as health. An economy isn't healthy unless it's rapidly growing. I often hear references to Japan's "lost decade" as proof that slow economic growth can destabilize and destroy a nation. But here's the thing, during those slow years of growth, Japanese companies were posting massive gains, they had insanely low unemployment nationwide (~4.2%), and their economy has progressed better than most European nations over the same time frame.

Growth isn't always the best indicator of economic health or stability, but for some reason it's the only thing US Businessmen and Policy Makers care about.

Yeah but some would simply say that Japan has been supporting itself on insane debt and that they are pushing off the real impact to later.

That being said, it's pretty obvious that a healthy economy is not driven by amassing wealth, but by spending it freely, and for that you need a large comfortable middle class.

Why? They have the Yen. People have been fear mongering about their debt since forever.

On that topic growth it also helps their population growth is lower meaning you don't need as much of a growing economy. I believe its more equitably distributed so they don't need to have larger growth to cover the gap (with out redistributive measures). And I believe there is a lot of poverty in Japan, its just hidden or tackled by families that live together.

500$ is a fucking lot, but fine cuisine places like Alena, French Laundry etc. tend to set you back around $250 and with wine it can easily be doubled, if not more. Whether it's worth it is an interesting question, I definitely never consider such places when I was poor, and if you do a money per minute of enjoyment type of analysis, they always fall short. But those places do provide a unique experience that you can't really get anywhere else, and while I still can get a bit of a sticker shock, if you think of it like a vacation, while $500 for a couple for a onetime weekend ain't cheap, but it's not billionaire money either..
But spending that type of doe at Ruth's Chris is loltastic, that chain is designed for people with more money than sense.

I will say that about that gathering of dickwads, if you're keeping a place open 3 hours longer than usual, nice tip is the fucking least you can do.

p.s.
TGI Friday is the worst of the worst, no one should ever rather go there, and unless you leave in the worst strip malled suburban hellscape there is no reason to go there.

IIRC, the average bill at Urasawa in Beverly Hills is over $1k. That's probably for a couple. It's easy to spend well above that too!
Urasawa is stupidly expensive, I'll never consider going there, but no way it's over 1k per person.
And if you include wine the sky's really the limit in any semi decent restaurant.
Is that omakase style? That's ridiculous btw. Lol
I think that's like $400, which is still fucking ridiculous if you ask me.
I love sushi, but I'll never pay such prices for it. Even if that's going to be the best sushi in the world (which I seriously doubt it is) it's going to be only marginally better than places that has much more reasonable prices.

That's amazing.
Spending 6k on TGI Friday's is some Brewster's Millions shit.

Yes. It's like $400-500 a person (as chichikov mentions) for it. It's in Beverly Hills, like 10 person at a time, long time reservation. I also think he's only 1 of 2 people in the US legally allowed to serve pufferfish (fugu).

I said over $1k for a couple, not per person. The sake can put you back from what I read. Bottles at $350!

If I was ridiculously rich, I wouldn't think twice about doing it once. Might as well spend the money on something lavish like that even though I generally agree with you.

Jiro from Jiro dreams of Sushi is like $300 I believe.

That's amazing.

It has to be one of those telephone game situations because I don't even understand how $6k is possible at TGIF. I mean, unless he left a $5k tip or something. I mean, what is the most expensive bottle of wine there? $50? Maybe? How would you possibly rack up that bill over 6 hours without buying food for the entire restaurant or it being a tip?

So it turns out Oklahoma will have close to $18 million less to spend than projected in the governor's initial budget. This is mainly due to low corporate tax collection.

http://newsok.com/low-corporate-tax-collections-hit-oklahomas-budget/article/3934982

Of course, this will do nothing to convince the governor to abandon her plan to cut taxes by an additional projected $136 million starting next year.

Voodoo economics are ruining my state. At least my city government seems to have its shit together.

I was going to comment on the fact that this will do nothing but cause her to cut more taxes, but I see you already made that comment.

So, what I will add is:

lol Republican governors?

Well... SC had a budget surplus recently. However, in a Dick Move by Nikki Haley, the president of USC wanted to freeze tuition for at least a year since prices are already outrageous. However, to do that, he needed 10mil from the state to make up for the difference. Well, he asked for that the day of the state of the state address by Mrs. I"ve-Got-A-New-Gun. Well, during the state of the state, Mrs. I've-Got-A-New-Gun. budgeted all of this money for K-12 education and other shit, but didn't mention a dime going to USC.

This is after Mrs. I've-Got-A-New-Gun replaced Darla Moore on the board of trustees with someone who contributed to her election campaign.

Edit: Changed her name to something that describes more recent events. :D

So, lol Republican governors.

Did liberals re-name "global warming" as "climate change" to avoid the embarrassment of the coldest winter ever debunking their heat assertions?

I've seen this question many times on facebook lol

A warming planet does not preclude extreme swings in weather (be it hot or cold) but try telling the average American that.

Should've been climate change from the beginning IMO.

They're trying to do the Post 20 week abortion ban here in SC despite data showing that abortions post 20 weeks are rare.

These fucking people:

GOP Candidate: Protecting LGBTs From Getting Fired Is 'Segregation'

A Republican congressional candidate in Nevada is arguing that legislation that prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity is segregation.

The candidate, Cresent Hardy, called the Employment Nondiscrimination Act, which prohibits employers from discriminating against their employees based on sexual orientation, a "segregation" law. The Employee Nondiscrimination Act has passed the Senate, but has yet to be taken up by the Republican-controlled House of Representatives. Hardy is running for Nevada's 4th Congressional District. Hardy is a member of the Nevada state assembly.

"When we create classes, we create that same separation that we’re trying to unfold somehow," Hardy said in an interview with the Las Vegas Sun on Tuesday. Mother Jones flagged Hardy's comments on Wednesday. "By continuing to create these laws that are what I call segregation laws, it puts one class of a person over another. We are creating classes of people through these laws."

Hardy also told the Sun that he would "always vote against same-sex marriage" because of his religious beliefs.

Do these people even understand the words they speak? By passing anti-gay laws, you are, in turn, causing segregation yourself. Idiots.

So CBO put out a report on the minimum wage hike to both $9.00 and $10.10.

According to them a $10.10 hike would cost 500,000 jobs, or 0.3% of total employment, but would take 900,000 people out of poverty and increase the wage of 16.5 million workers. Apparently the theory is higher costs leads to higher prices leads to lower demand leads to lower production leads to unemployment, alongside the usual worries about high tech automation replacing those jobs.

A lot of the report seems to expect higher price increases than I expected since I thought the percentage of minimum wage costs in the over all costs was pretty low. I also wonder what industries they're talking about that are so sensitive to price increases that they'll be a big fall in demand if the industry increases price as a whole. Like I don't see people stop going to fast food restaurants if every single restaurant raises the price of their food by a dollar, particularly when 16.5 million workers will be more likely to afford that price hike. I wish CBO gave examples for which firms they saw as at risk for unemployment increases.

Of course the jobs part is the only part that's going to be reported on because jobs are the only thing that matter. We could apparently have the worker rights of China as long as we have good employment numbers.

Pro-McConnell ad: I don't want to repeal Obamacare, I want to fix it!

Mitch McConnell has spent the last six months beating off attacks from his Republican primary challenger, who alleges that the Senate minority leader hasn't done enough to stop -- repeal, really -- Obamacare.

Which makes a new ad in support of McConnell, released Wednesday by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, a little hard to explain. The words "repeal" or "stop" are nowhere to be found. Instead, the ad touts that McConnell "is leading the fight to fix this Obamacare mess."

The ad starts by reiterating some of the conservative scare lines about the law -- losing a doctor or skyrocketing premiums -- and then praises McConnell for his work to "fix this Obamacare mess" by lowering costs and reducing red tape. It ends with a message urging voters to support the senator.

Ironically, that almost sounds like the "fix, don't repeal" message that Democratic campaigns want to utilize to fend off Republican attacks over the health care reform law, as TPM reported.
Hilarious and also pathetic. McConnell is going down.

Also:

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/...ceeds-2014-exchange-enrollment-goals/5610531/

WASHINGTON — Well before the March 31 deadline to buy insurance, California announced Tuesday it has already exceeded its 2014 enrollment goals for its health care exchange.

By the end of January, 728,410 people had enrolled in private health plans through Covered California, and 100,000 more signed up in the first two weeks of February. About 26% are 34 and younger.

"These enrollment numbers mean that with six weeks to go, California has already exceeded its projected base enrollment for the 2014 open-enrollment period," said Covered California executive director Peter Lee. "While this is a strong showing, our goal is not pinned to meeting projections, but to making sure every Californian gets covered."

Eighty percent of enrollees have paid their first month's premium, Lee said, and another 877,000 are eligible for Medicaid in California.

More money collected in taxes and less money spent chasing down and imprisoning pot heads and pot dealers. Seems like a win-win to me.

OK, there definitely WILL be problems. There will be high drivers, there will be people to smoke too much, etc. But net total cost-benefit analysis seems to be in favor of legalization.

Man, it is going to be hilarious if the McConnell loses.

GOP leadership losing in the south? That would be sweet.
I wouldn't read much into it - McConnell's brand is particularly toxic, and Grimes would have a very tough re-election fight on her hands in 2020 - but certainly no GOP operative is going to want to see that headline.

So the XL Pipeline just got crushed in Nebraska...

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/201...aw-that-allowed-keystone-pipeline-to-proceed/

Lancaster County Judge Stephanie Stacy issued a ruling that invalidated Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman's approval of the route. Stacy agreed with opponents' arguments that law passed in 2011 improperly delegated the decision-making power to Heineman to give the company eminent domain powers within the state. Stacy said the decision should have been made by the Nebraska Public Service Commission, which regulates pipelines and other utilities.

The lawsuit was filed by three Nebraska landowners who oppose the pipeline.

"Under the Court's ruling, TransCanada has no approved route in Nebraska," Dave Domina, the landowners' attorney, said in a statement. "TransCanada is not authorized to condemn the property against Nebraska landowners. The pipeline project is at standstill in this state."
