"Nothing to fear but fear itself" can possibly be taken to mean fear the irrationality born from fear. And in a sense this is exactly what happened with Trump it seems, though even that may not be the simplest explanation.

God damn. Yeah, validating my mentality of "we're in a safe state. So let's make sure it stays that way." And I was probably in the safest state (and with like nine million props to vote on.)

She's like an awkward nerd with overly earnest good intentions who is vaguely aware that she comes across poorly but doesn't know how to fix it so she's stopped being overly introspective for fear of what she'll find.

After watching the Samantha Bee video it seems more like any personality and authenticity she did have was washed away trying to be a politician in the 90s and early 2000s.

Think it is less the nerdiness and more the robotic personality she was essentially required to adopt to stop pissing people off for being an independent women.

which democrat would have put the white nationalist on the democratic side?

lol

this is bigger than hillary.

Turnout was way down, man. People were not enthused. I still think it's fucking foolish and they're gonna regret not voting, but that's the reality. (but yes, he did bring a lot of the worst fucking assholes out of the woodwork to make up for the problem)

I supported Clinton from her announcement. I think she'd have been an amazing President. I think that it was absurd how many were out to get her (FBI, Russia, Wikileaks, GOP).

And yet, I will absolutely admit that she was a shit candidate for this cycle. We need someone principled and charismatic to run to have a shot. Authenticity (or the perception of it) is paramount. Experience and endorsements mean little.

She was a bad candidate for a crazy election season.

Absolutely a portion of blame falls there, I agree.

This is bullshit. Here I'll try to summarize something.

Politicians and Political Parties have as their principal objective WINNING ELECTIONS.

Failure to do so is a reflection of their inadequacies, not the voters nor the country.

I really goddamn hope this is the moment that buries this complacency

This election sucks.

How much of this is voters being lazy and how much is the gutting of the VRA and Govs like Walker making it harder and harder for people to vote

White working class. Bernie was the champion of that shit. Even Joe Biden has that going for him.

A life long politician, establishment as it gets candidate like Clinton was the worst choice. Dems were self indulgent.

I mean, have you seen my other posts?

She screwed up by running, he compounded the error.

He was trying to win a primary, and successfully made it almost 50/50 after being some random old socialist dude in single digits that no millennial had ever heard of.

She lost to black Barack Hussein Obama, almost lost to Bernard socialist workers party Sanders, and now fascist sexual assault Trump. It's 100% her.

I find numbers like this to be good news. Certainly the doom and gloom that people were predicting in the thread are not true. Democrats can win again with a good candidate.

Scintillating hot takes.

Much of America is fucked.
I was completely wrong, as was every prognosticator. I'm okay with that. But I'm sad for the people affected by this.
White rural racists apparently don't need to have their doors knocked.
Trump sounds like he's accepting an Oscar.
No, I don't think other counterfactual candidates would have won either - UNLESS - they were also able to appeal to white rural racists. His victory appears to be due to running up the margins with a wave of these voters, many that don't normally vote. And that's not something that a Warren, a Bernie or even a more conservative Biden stops.

Trump has resonated with a dark, hateful part of the electorate.

When a huge number of voters vote for a white nationalist that is an indictment of those voters and their country.

It's very simple as to why this happened. The Bradley Effect, which states that if you sense there's an open opposition to your views, you're going to hide it. Considering the things Trump supporters have been called over the course of this campaign, along with its' volatility, it makes perfect sense why that vote happened. When I started looking into the polling data weeks ago, I could tell that there were oddities that made me think 'yup, he's got a shot at this.'

The mainstream media, Fox, CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, the Republican party, its' candidates, the Democratic party and Hillary Clinton, got beat by a rookie. For the highest office in the land. It's going to take a long time for the people invested on her side to cope with this result.

It's going to be renamed the Hillary Effect from this point forward. It will be a long time before a woman can ever run for President again.

this is bigger than hillary.

Arguably another candidate could have actually produced the turnout to counter Trump's rural surge, which it's turning out wasn't actually that big when considering the number of people who just didn't fucking show up.

Yep.

I read this election so poorly. I need to pull my head out of my ass and relearn the world.

In all seriousness I think that the state government is going to balk at all of the Trump presidency proposals and just stop short of ignoring them. I don't know how effective that will be though.

Depends on the policy, but fairly effective. Look at Obamacare. So it depends on what it is.

But shit like a wall, etc? Nah.

SPOILER: Columbus finds America
Oh man....

8 years I met my wife on the eve of Obama winning the election. NYC was amazing place to be...

8 years later we had to celebrate our anniversary with this fucking disaster.

I don't know what to think anymore, this has turned my world upside down.

I just hope somehow that Trump really is a new york liberal deep down inside and somehow proves everyone wrong. But just like my faith in the American people, it's a fucking pipe dream. Good night GAF :/

I'm stunned, humbled and ashamed. Hard to fathom.

At least the art that falls out of this catastrophe will be something to witness.

A lot of it could be the gutting of the VRA. Many of these voter suppresion laws were passed in 2011-2012 but couldn't be enacted until the 2014 election.

We couldn't count on those people to vote against Donald fucking Trump, those people cannot be relied up

Minorities turned out in swing states. It was the white dem leaners in WI, MI, MN and the rest that just didn't turn out.

Aka a group that most likely heavily supported Bernie.

is there any hope

if white rural voters can sway the tide like this

does it matter? Does anything we do matter? if someone could rile up white people like this

does it matter?

for the first time I had medical care. I got myself taken care off. I'm coughing right now. It's gonna be gone isn't it. I'm so sad. Sadder than I realized I could be over something like this. hillary was our firewall and she failed. fuck her. fuckehrer.

State governments have a little more sway than a president?

I keep thinking to myself that it's ok because I live in California. Is it really??? Honest question

Certainly hope so cause my wife and I are starting to apply to jobs out there to get the fuck out of Florida. My brother lives in San Jose so that's going to help is narrow our s search

This read is flawed. Reading the electorate like this is what made this situation happen and nothing will be fixed by stubbornly calling 50 million people racists. Is not only the racism, is the anti establishment charisma that Clinton lacked since she became First Lady.

This was so fucking evident since October last year. But yeah, Clinton and allies didn't listen.

Only really applicable in WI and NC. Doesn't account for PA, FL, or MI.

Maybe OH, but not as much.

It's really all about the fact that dems just didn't show up.

And that only 112 million people out of 350 million actually cared enough to vote at all.

Turnout is not that down

I think it's up in the swing states. Which is what matters.

That less people in NY voted doesn't matter. Also lot of votes out there. It should cross 120 million.

My hope at this point for the future, 2018, 2020 will be that Clinton being a weak candidate was the cause of this. Low turnout, white women voting for Trump because they hated Clinton. If it's the other thing, then things are looking very bad for the future.

I'll choose to believe it's the other thing until election results prove me wrong.

The other thing is that being a racist works as long as you have a bombastic personality, no matter who you run against.

I know that feeling. I stopped coming to poligaf because of the proliferation of posts claiming Clinton was a better choice than Bernie because pragmatism/centrism wins elections, (in a year where the vast majority of the country hates congress/politicians/wall street?? somehow?).
