So for a period of 1992 through 2019, Republicans have only won the popular vote once and will have still managed to hold our government hostage for just about that entire period. So much power from so few votes.

Except there's literally no proof of that at all. These people gave them what they supposedly wanted and still lost. I mean Teachout lost in NY. If progressive populism was going to win anywhere it would have been here, in a state that the Dems carried handily.

I totally agree with you. Having said that, I don't think it's premature to say that the Clinton turnout of the base was a clear and unmitigated failure. So there has to be some way to reconcile those two realities.

Umm, they have virtually the same message.

She's a far better politician than he is. Same policies, same ideology, different delivery mechanisms.

Well, it's the truth. As uncomfortable as it is, the reality is that whites decided this election. Trump appealed to the ugly side, Clinton...well, she did something I guess?

How is it the truth?

1.) Hillary Lost
2.) Progressive Socialist Dems lost worse

How can you reconcile that?

Michelle Obama should run. She doesn't have much political experience but then again she has more than Trump. Why not.

Because they'll try to tear her to shreds. Clinton was built to withstand this and prepared her whole life. Michelle didn't.

Because black + woman is probably a losing combination no matter the candidate in 2020.

But, why did they get less votes than Hillary?

Because as the GOP went further right people like me thought it would be safer to go with someone more moderate. But her baggage and 8 years of frustration with the Obama administration with little promises in the way of change or what she would be able to do differently decreased turnout and left people who would have voted out of the process.

That's what I'm struggling with today. Was Hillary always gonna lose the Midwest, or was it just the biggest strategic blunder since Giuliani decided to not campaign until Florida in 2008? We might never know.

I still don't think Bernie was a good candidate either; but at this point, everything I thought was true is completely wrong.

Also, not to bedwet even more, I just looked at the 2018 Senate races and... fuck. Trump's gonna have a Republican government through 2020, isn't he? He would need to fuck up so bigleague that the Democrats take the house somehow.

well, silver lining.

I hope he's ok :(

He's ok, dude got married this morning. Wanted to get it done just in case.

I feel like it's all on personality and "swag." Whoever we go with in 2020 needs to have those things.

Any chance of Michelle in 2020?

She likely won't, but she's such a perfect candidate.

I wouldn't blame her after she saw how they treated herself, Obama, and Hillary during her time as FLOTUS.

Where did Adam go?

Everyone going through the stages of grief in their own way right now.

This is an emotional blow that will take a generation to resolve, I don't think anyone can process that quickly.

Electoral College needs to die. When it basically fails to elect the person the majority of voters want in two elections since the year 2000, enough is enough.

I did not ever think the EC would come back to bite us in the ass again. Not this soon.

This is one of the worst days I've had in a long time. I am legit worried for this country's future.

We'll get through this man. I feel you though man. My soul kinda hurts right now.

Why is this so difficult to understand.

The Progressive Senate Socialist Populist Candidates GOT LESS VOTES THAN HILLARY.

Bad candidates lost. You can be at the right ideological place but if you are a shit candidate or in the wrong historical context you will lose anyway.

Finegold and Teachout are shit candidates now?
Wow you bernie people are hilarious

Zero. She wants nothing to do with politics.

The Dems have no one in 2020 who can inspire its base AND win enough votes from others.

And on the topic of moving to Michigan: don't do it. Or Ohio. I'm fleeing the Buckeye State as soon as I can find work elsewhere. That's been the plan for a while, but it's been made abundantly clear my kind (read as: not a hard right white Christian Republican) is not wanted here.
i am more inclined to think there isn't anyone inspirational as long as history hadn't already proved it wrong. sanders is an old guy, but he came out of nowhere. trump sort of stumbled in too. obama had a good speech in 2004, but he wasn't considered a frontrunner for 2008 back then. i think the dems actually have a lot to choose from, but they need to really understand voters and how obama did well.

More than anything else, I'm just mad at myself for becoming so absorbed in a bubble of group think and failing to imagine what could possibly happen. It is a lesson that has constantly hit home and yet, here I am, not expanding my worldview and ignoring what actually could happen. My reality has been shattered and it is hard to know where to start by rebuilding it.

Go outside, take a look at your country, all of it, talk to your fellow US citizens.

Edit:

Had no idea he requested a ban. Hope he is ok and decides to come back. Donald is not worth it.

She appealed to the better angels of our natures.

White nationalism won.

I am surprised. But I'm not confused. Nor am I in denial like many other people.

Being tied to a shitty candidate who would have been the most unpopular candidate in modern history if she wasn't going up against Trump will do that. I'm not sure if you're aware, but if the top of the ticket loses all of the downballot tickets suffer dramatically as well.

But please tell me more about how running the most disliked candidate in modern history was such a brilliant move and far more preferable than running Sanders who by the end of the primary emerged as the most popular sitting senator.

"A real progressive populist would have won!"
"Progressive populists lost all over the country."
"Well, they too would have won if we had run a real progressive populist!"

Thanks white males, tell me more about Bernie Sanders
You can stop erasing the POC who supported Sanders any day now.

Assuming the final Senate composition is 52-48, democrats would need 3 states to flip. So Arizona, Nevada, and one out of the following:

Mississippi
Nebraska
Tennessee
Texas
Wyoming

While holding every other seat.

Republicans will almost certainly have 4 years of complete congress control.

I don't know. Each race is worth looking into what went wrong. I think we can come up with better explanations that we can use in the future rather than "racism just wins so we are fucked".

It's hard to do that if you're a racial minority or lgbt citizen though. I've been consistently told across my almost 20 years of being on this earth that my rights aren't a pressing issue or not a big deal by my own country.

Except they also lost in states where she won. Teachout lost in New York of all places and she was basically female Bernie.

She was falling behind in some polls.

I honestly didn't pay a lot of attention to the race after a certain point. Still shocked she lost like that.

Sure, my bad. Many people of color also chose this year to implicitly support a white nationalist for president instead of Hillary Clinton. I hope they get what they wanted.

Jason Kander ran 16 points ahead of Hillary.

seriously people

Kander 2020, he ran16 points ahead of Clinton

and the GOP can't talk about "experience" for the rest of their existence

Can't run a secretary of state from Missouri as President. He needs to hold either a congressional seat, a senate seat (which is out of play now) or the governorship realistically.
