Vox has obnoxious headlines but is pretty good for a center-left liberal perspective. I prefer their podcasts to the articles, though.

It's a blog, but ginandtacos.com is pretty interesting and funny commentary from a political science professor in Chicago I think, though uh occasionally he's less sensitive than I'd probably like. He also is pretty good at criticism of liberal centrism if you're into that, especially if you want someone who isn't an actual socialist doing the critique.

If you're looking more into the socialist side of things, Jacobin usually has some pretty good articles, though I think they're often a little too class-focused and occasionally downplay racism. I've been meaning to subscribe to the actual magazine for a while but haven't gotten around to it. They also have a pretty good (and free!) short collection of essays about socialism if you're interested in it as an ideology but have questions because all you've known is liberal capitalism called The ABCs of Socialism.

Pod Save America is a good podcast that's basically Keepin' It 1600 but now under its own brand. If you hadn't listened to it before, it's four former Obama staffers who do commentary and try to help people get involved with activism.

New Republic is pretty good and a decent range from liberal to leftist. I haven't read a whole lot of their stuff though.

For news-y news, I do NPR (mostly when I'm in the car) and WaPo for domestic coverage and BBC/Al Jazeera for international news, though I don't think these are what you're looking for. Hope this helps!

Yo but he's a Smart Wonk Conservative with Big Ideas about how to Help People Gain Liberty and definitely isn't a Randian hack that masturbates to poor children starving.

Sarcasm?

Where do you guys go for your progressive "news and views," so to speak?

I was a pretty moderate liberal until recently but I'm feeling particularly amped and radicalized under Trump. I listen to a lot of Chapo Trap House and follow a lot of politicians I like directly on Twitter. Jason Kander even liked one of my tweets (too bad I live in Maine).

I won't be the last to recommend Pod Save America if you're not already on that. The old Keepin' it 1600 crew's new podcast; they are a bunch of former Obama aides. Excellent insights and interviews.

EDIT: I see I'm beaten, but tbh PSA deserves its own post anyway.

thoughts?

greatest politician of all time? or mad man that ushered in a new age of imperalism and militarism for Germany?
What the fuck is even going on with this guy's recent post history

It's a bizarre mix of European history fetishism and unsubtle racism and Warhammer 40k

Sorry I am a long time lurker from Europe but I really need to ask a question...
Regarding Paul Ryan, how can someone with such a libertarian approach would ever write a bill giving ownership of the companies to the workers?
Sorry for the question
Edit: Bismark was a pretty great politician for what the middle europe was used to, but he was also helped by the situation post Napoleon in which the small states in the "Holy Roman Empire" actually noticed they needed to form a new identity. Still should have formed better long term relationships instead of playing like me in any strategy game (just single time deals)

I apologize for the fake news. Looks like whitehouse.gov isn't updating with legislation for whatever reason, but Trump has signed 3 bills into law.

S.84 - To undo the law that Secretary of Defense can't have been in military within the last seven years for Mattis.

H.R.39 - To continue Obama's program to recruit software engineers to develop government programs and websites

H.R.72 - To give Government Accountability Office access to required federal agency records

Undoing the "Stream Protection Rule" for coal pollution, and the rule for "Disclosure of Payments by Resource Extraction Issuers" in SEC filings are on Trump's table. Both rules were put in place by obama in late 2016.

That's all for passed legislation thus far.

I don't know if he is an libertarian, but many establishment republicans are close to libertarians when it comes to economic policy but not completely.

Jon Lovett needs to be fired from Pod save America.

I like his voice on the show.

I enjoy all four of the guys, but Favreau, Vietor and Pfiffor sip the Obama kool-aid a little too much sometimes. Sometimes you don't get the impression they think that anything is going to turn out bad in the end.

In between his jokes, I appreciate how it's usually Lovett cutting in to remind everyone how fucked up everything is and, no, our best days aren't still ahead of us if we don't get up and do something.

EDIT: Vietor gets the "oh, that's right, you're here" award of the group if anyone gets it, though. So I can see why he doesn't like Lovett. lol

Pfeifer fucking lost me wth his little mini-rant a few episodes ago about needing to support Trump's presidency even if we don't like him because, "guys, people could get hurt if Trump's presidency isn't successful."

And it's like...have you heard about even half of what Trump wants to do? People will get hurt if Trump's presidency is successful.

If anyone needs to go, it should be him. Thursday's podcast used to be an instant listen for me like Monday, now I put it on the bottom of my weekly pile if there isn't a good guest.

He's kind of already turned lol. He's on team full obstructionism now.

Because Ryan's not smart. He just wanted to privatize social security because he hates the government so he wanted to put it in the stock market. But he didn't take time to realize that this huge sum of money from the social security fund would cause labor to own most major companies through their social security investments.

It was not intentionally written that way, he just hates government.

So ages ago I had the idea for crowdfunding for lobbyists. That got confusing when I looked into how lobbying works.
Today I had another one, has anyone tried setting up a site that allows donations and then gives them to a congresspersons opponent if they don't vote a certain way?

Did he also not know that social security funds tend to also be invested into state debt? He really has no idea what social security is and the benefit for the state to have one (and not only for the citizens). Thanks for the explanation, it just sounded weird when you first wrote it.

Cool shit. We should work with this guy.

From tomorrows edition of the Times.

Stuff like this is why I'm more hawkish than you'd think given my political leanings. The US is standing on a street corner with a body like The Rock, and we're just watching people like Assad just abuse others all over the place. The continued reign of people like this is absolutely a moral failure of our country.

We will control the means of production in order to finance our liberation from work, and a disciple of Ayn Rand will hand it to us. Lol.

I mean, I'm more in favor of US military power than most leftist but you sound like someone before Iraq.

remember me
Lovett is the best thing about keepin it 1600/Pod Save America and the Monday episodes are the best because of him. Favs is the 2nd best. Vietor sucks and I wouldn't miss him.

The thing with shit like assad is like...what the fuck are you even supposed to do? Kill him? Ok. Power vacuum, situation in recent history usually gets worse. Good odds of all hell breaking loose, like libya. De facto colonize the place, like afghanistan? ok, you get to pretend for as long as you like that the taliban won't take over as soon as you leave. Even what one could very generously try to call a success story, like iraq, very clearly wants absolutely nothing to do with allowing US troops in their borders (besides that token force that was left, obv).

I mean, it's like the NK problem, but considerably less dangerous for its neighbours. And all the while you might very well have to tolerate shit like bacha bazi to get anywhere. And all of that? For no clear gain to the average american. No guarantees that you'll make it better after intervention. No guarantees even that you won't make it worse. Only guarantee is that it'll cost a fuckload of money that could sure be put to better use somewhere else. (not that funneling the dosh anywhere else like, say, infrastructure, would be an option on the table, given the political power makeup)

Honestly, i don't know how to approach a problem like that. Completely understand why some countries just provide what humanitarian support they can and call it a day.

It's a bizarre mix of European history fetishism and unsubtle racism and Warhammer 40k

I mean...w40k kinda already consolidates the other two points.

I mean, I'm more in favor of US military power than most leftist but you sound like someone before Iraq.

I've always held that the aftermath and overall handling of Iraq was the bigger issue; I think there's a moral imperative to do something when you know there's a guy next door who's murdered at least 250K people in his reign.

I tend to get riled up in discussions about political sovereignty when stuff like this comes up because it's really in poor taste to me to talk about "we shouldn't interfere in how other countries are run" when a person living in one of these regimes would likely not be comforted by your respect for their border. If Trump were to start massacring Muslims and gay people, I'd hope places like Canada and the UK and whatnot would depose him to save people instead of worrying about the imaginary line drawn around our country.

If anything Trump signs adds up to even something like SCHIP or Lily Ledbetter I will be shocked.

I mean...w40k kinda already consolidates the other two points.

Heh, I love Warhammer 40K video game stuff but the only acquaintance I ever knew in real life who bought those miniatures was creepily obsessed with the military history of Nazi Germany. It was like a genie brought a dumb and distasteful internet meme to life. It was the only time in my life when I have seriously thought I was talking to a potential mass shooter.

If Trump were to start massacring Muslims and gay people, I'd hope places like Canada and the UK and whatnot would depose him to save people instead of worrying about the imaginary line drawn around our country.

No country would dare lift a single finger. Stern words would be all you'd get.

Yay I finally got to answer in a phone politics survey. Got to express my disapproval for Trump, Paul Ryan, Davros
DeVos
, Immigration Ban, Sessions, etc.
They also asked whether I approved of the Media or not
It seems like a stupid thing to be excited about, but the last time they called to poll they hung up every time I answered that I was a Democrat =/

There's really very little to stop this from happening if Trump wants. It's scary how much of our system is held together by not electing psychotics.
Because the American Political System didn't account for the fucking of Education Republicans have promoted for so long now. No one who signed the declaration thought that a Demagogue would be able to even run for president, let alone win, or that the governing bodies that are supposed to check his power would be so blinded by Partianship that they'd let him fuck over everything so long as he has an R next to his name.

Republicans know that Devos is more unqualified for this job then anyone else, but they don't give a shit about the good of the country because "Fuck you got mine". They would burn the entire country down to ensure that Democrats could do nothing.

This all makes so little sense. We all thought Paul Ryan and McConnell would've hamfisted all their wet dreams to Trump's desk by now but there's almost no activity. I'd say there might be a strategy to it, but they're all likely just reeling from Trump's disasters.

Ryan has to herd cats to get Republicans to agree on passing anything and they have no plan to actually govern. Their big win was going to be repealing Obamacare but they're facing major heat. Taxes are complicated and they're facing huge corporate lobbying for different stuff there.

McConnell needs 60 votes to pass anything outside of Trump's cabinet nominees and Dems can grind things to a near-halt if they want.

They can only cram so much stuff into budget reconciliation.

Meanwhile Trump's running around setting fires with an incompetent White House staff and making it impossible for the GOP Republicans to push a coherent narrative since Trump changes the media focus every 2 seconds.
