PoliGAF 2017 |OT4| The leaks are coming from inside the white house

Excellent insight below.

The media's war on Trump is destined to fail. Why can't it see that?

The news media’s alarms about Trump have been shrieking at high C for more than a year. It was in January of 2016 that the Huffington Post began appending a denunciation of Trump as a “serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, birther and bully” to every single story about the man. It was last August that the New York Times published an essay approving of the profession’s collective understanding of Trump as a political mutation – an unacceptable deviation from the two-party norm – that journalists must cleanse from the political mainstream.

It hasn’t worked. They correct and denounce; they cluck and deride and Trump seems to bask in it. He reflects this incredible outpouring of disapprobation right back at the press itself. The old “liberal bias” critique, a minor deity in the pantheon of Republican paranoia since the days of Trump’s hero Richard Nixon, has been elevated to first place. Trump and company now use it to explain everything. And the news media’s reputation sinks lower and lower as they advance into their golden age.

Is the excellent insight in the comments? Because I don't see any in the article.

It's in the article. He gives a brief overview into why trust is eroding and their reputations are sinking. They'll have to change their approach if they want to win and be seen as legitimate on Trump as well as other pertinent issues.

Ratings and trust in the media are both up compared to Trump, though...

I mean, the constant barrage is clearly having an effect here. If it didn't, Trump wouldn't be bitching about it like he does. The fact he is upset all of the time tells me he's extremely concerned over being called out on his incompetence.

Additionally, he has managed, despite having the House and Senate, to so far pass zero major legislative items. The big one that was passed ended up largely being a victory for Democrats.

He'll always have his base of core racist supporters that will not waver. I don't give a shit about those fucks. The more important thing is Dem supporters being energized and independents either being depressed or realizing they fucked up by "giving him a chance."

That's one of the most important results of all of this imo. It also seems to be affecting the performance of Congressional Republicans as well.

Incredibly naive to assume that media corporations would rather defeat Trump than enjoy their highest ratings in years.

In other news, new White House communications director says he's being transparent and deleting old tweets because opinions evolve and all that matters is Trumps agenda. He's not very good at this.

He's not very good at tweeting at all lmao

Yup. This is where the "9th dimensional chess" stuff falls apart the most (well besides Trump being a complete idiot of course). If he was actually good at politics he'd turn his support into governance. He clearly has not, and it's hurt him.

The media is supposed to report the news. And the president of the United States being a corrupt, idiotic, incompetent, ignorant, jackass that constantly says outrageous thing is news.

What should they do? Put their heads in the sand and pretend everything is normal?

Yes, says Chris Cillizza, proudly utilizing his English degree after a failed career as a playwright.

Yes. Trump voters have hurt feelings from this bad press and their desire for revenge against arrogant liberals is tearing America apart...and disrupting the integrity of internet threads.

That feeling when you're watching old Sesame Street with the kids and Michelle Obama comes on as the First Lady.

...then you remember Melania would never go on Sesame Street and trump is president.

What's the chance of Kelli Ward actually beating Flake in a primary? McCain beat her 52-39, which seems closer than it should've been, and Flake has some of the lowest popularity numbers in the Senate. Is there any polling available? A WaPo article from a month back implied that he's feeling a bit scared.

Of course, if she runs for the semi-open seat, this discussion will be moot.

Ratings and trust in the media are both up compared to Trump, though...

Their numbers are up based off what? The numbers are typically very low like the following poll: http://www.npr.org/2017/07/03/53504...sened-under-trump-trust-in-institutions-down\

Also, the coverage doesn't match up with what people want to know (based off what I've seen): https://twitter.com/SteveRattner/status/888112148181680130/photo/1

If you've seen recent info that suggests the media is far more popular or trustworthy, then please share that with me.

Also the big one that was passed was an appropriations bill.

Cool, you got the bare minimum expected of every president and got completely fleeced by the minority party in the process.

Like imagine if all Obama had to show for his first six months was a GOP-sponsored funding bill that cut Social Security.

If you look at the insanely low approval ratings for the GOP healthcare bill, you can see what the pressure has done. If Fox News wasn't on full time defense, they would be cranking their info machine against the evils of Obamacare. Because they haven't been able to do that, Democrats have completely controlled the debate and we get quotes from Republican voters in the NYT like this:

Fox News is obviously massively powerful. They made 55% of Republicans believe that Trump Jr. never had a meeting that Jr. himself admits to. But we are seeing the limitations of their influence here. They don't have the bandwidth to defend Trump and push their agenda.

As long as Hannity has to have Sekulow and Gorka on every single night, the GOP is going to have a hard time winning any sort of policy debate.

Oh gee you can't remember why you opposed Obamacare?

Rising subscriptions to NYT, WaPo, rising CNN viewing growth, rising MSNBC growth, and Fox News decline in popularity reflect that, if nothing else, the general news media is doing just fine regarding public influence.

I'd post articles, but I'm at my phone. Google would suffice no problem though.

personally I think it's kinda dumb to suggest that "no one" cares about the Russia story when Russia-related news is leading to newspapers breaking records for subscriptions and page views and freaking Rachel Maddow is regularly #1 on cable

Polling people about "the media" is futile because "the media" is an indefinite mass that ranges from The Young Turks and MSNBC to NYT, WaPo, ABC, CBS, NBC and CNN to Fox News, Breitbart and InfoWars to local news media.

Polling Trump against some specific media outlets shows a different picture entirely: https://www.axios.com/exclusive-astonishing-poll-about-trump-and-media-2453120782.html

This fight back from Dems has been really inspiring. They've gotten a lot of shit for low-spirited efforts, so their coordination here is much appreciated!

So I literally don't get what CNN, the NYT, the WaPo, ect are supposed to do.

1) Be nice and pretend that Trump is a normal president and ignore the Russia investigation.

2) Brainwashed Trump voters maybe hate them slightly less.

3) ?????????

4) The media is finally able to slay Trump.

So I know you're being sarcastic, but i'll try to explain LaughingStock's implication. That, if the media were to give Trump more of a benefit of a doubt and stop covering him so much, people would trust the media more. What LaughingStock ignores is that the vast majority of distrust in the media was created by Trump and would still happen regardless of the media's objective treatment of Trump. The distrust has little to do with the media coverage and far more to do with the President publicly attacking their credentials twice a week. And he will not stop because it benefits him to eliminate as many possible outside voices influencing citizens as he can.

"A red flag for Democrats continues to be a perception that Trump is isolating himself from the GOP base with his tweets. Not only do most Republicans approve of his use of Twitter, but asked to describe those tweets, the No. 1 mention among the GOP is 'truthful,' with 'entertaining' in second place."

Yeah. One of the biggest problems with politics is viewing it as entertainment with winners & losers.

Yeah, Trump's going to shit on the media who are critical of him even if they try to do the "lol both sides" game. Or if they kiss his ass for a couple years and then turn on him.

They have a duty to report the truth.

I don't think the Trumpbots who are critical of the media even care enough to read the "DC insider People mag" stuff about who partied where.

Yeah. One of the biggest problems with politics is viewing it as entertainment with winners & losers.

I think that just shows what is pretty obvious. If you're a member of the GOP and haven't jumped off now, there is nothing more to do. They will die with him.

My priority is Dems being energized and independents breaking away in enough numbers to make waves. As long as those items happen, Trump's core base can go play in traffic for all I care.

At the least, the # of those who would possibly jump ship by now are miniscule enough so as to not consider. The best way to shore up numbers now is to rile up your own base and do better with independents.

Did Sessions ever issue a statement besides "Ah wee-yul not resi-uhn" or are they just going to ride out the WaPo story?
Pretty sure they're going to ride it out. Trump sees Flynn's firing and Session's recusal as mistakes, so as far as they're concerned, they're done making concessions.

This is new. Literally EVERY other article/poll about Trump voters says the majority of them wish he's stop fucking tweeting. I'm going to need to see way more data saying they actually like it before I believe so.

I agree that "politics as sport" is one of the worst aspects of our current political climate.

My Senators are still saying to keep calling on healthcare.

https://twitter.com/SenFeinstein/status/888839817366192128

We may vote to start debate on a health care bill next Tuesday. Which one? No one knows. It’s ridiculous.

https://twitter.com/KamalaHarris/status/888866252596367361

Stay focused. Health care for 22+ million is still at stake. Keep the calls up: (202) 224-3121.

Does anyone know what's the latest after the Senate Parliamentarian made their rulings?

Keep in mind "Trump voters" includes nearly every Republican but also a large chunk of independents. The former is the base who eats this shit up, but Trump won on the backs of swing voters who were so desperate for a change they were willing to put Trump in charge (who's always been portrayed by the media as a savvy businessman, so what's the harm?).

Every poll i've seen shows most republican voters wanting him to stop tweeting or to tweet less. I mean, you can like your quarterback but that doesnt mean you like it when he fumbles or throws interceptions.

The way in which they're doing it is much more preferable. Fenstein acknowledges we don't know wtf is going on, Harris's is a "good job, keep the pressure up" message.

Neither is Chicken Little-ing.

They (Trump supporters) basically want everyone to have a very low bar for Trump. Like, if he goes two days without a fucking crisis of his own doing, he should be considered good. They dont understand that Trump is failing the lowest bar imaginable that you won't set even for someone who flips burgers. Like, no one is even talking about how Trump gave away our secrets to Russians inside the oval office.
