What fucking wins? Obamacare is falling apart due to sabotage, DACA won't be replaced by legislation, important institutions are being dismantled from the inside in ways that won't be entirely clear until historians tell us 20 years from now, our administration is woefully prepared for any crisis that might require leadership and restraint, our alliances are being dismantled by braggadocio and economic illiteracy, and Republicans can definitely still pass a wide swath of their agenda in the coming years. Also it's only been 7 months.

But at least the Republicans look bad in our small, insular thought bubble.

Half of this is false of course

The sheer amount of wins for Democrats while not holding a single branch of government is pretty astounding

Defeating ACA repeal was a huge win, regardless of what the administration does to continue sabotaging the law.

Republicans can pass more of their agenda in the coming years, but their best and easiest opportunity to do so has elapsed and that's precisely because of the pro-ACA effort that both congressional Dems and activists outside of the Hill put in over the last several months.

Which ones :/
If you'd told me last year that the GOP was *not* going to be able to cut the social safety net to the bone, I absolutely would not have believed you. Now it looks like they're going to get no legislation done in years 1 and 2. Maybe in 2019 things will look more dire again, but for now it's definitely better than expected.

I'm not sure I completely understand how extending the debt limit by 3 months accomplishes this. The Dems can now insert the debt limit threat to other proposals?

Another debt limit vote gives Dems leverage.

The whole point of getting rid of DACA was to start enforcing immigration laws. If Congress passes a legislative replacement and he signs it into law, WTF was the point?

Trump wants it both ways: he wants to satisfy his anti-immigrant base but also appear not heartless to Dreamers. Killing DACA as an executive initiative and signing a legislative replacement into law lets him have it both ways.

A 3 month increase means Chuck can pull the exact same card on them in 3 months. If they were smart, they'd increase it for a year or more. Sure it's a win for Dems, but so is the 3 month increase, and a longer one means one of our cards is off the table.

@daveweigel

Pelosi is both 1) a political problem for 2018 Dems and 2) a stone-cold assassin in Hill negotiations.
I agree with this, but the thing is anyone who replaces Pelosi would suffer a similar fate as Congressional leaders are inherently unpopular. So 1 is neutralized while 2 is a clear advantage over replacing her with someone like Tim Ryan.

You guys hear Trump talk on Air Force One to reporters. Mentioned Pelosi and Schumer numerous times and in positive remarks. Didn't even mention republicans. S weird.

Hopefully good shit starts to happen regardless of what you think of Trump and his atrocious views perhaps Democrats can somehow maneuver this moment and make some positive change.

There's nothing wrong with Democrats playing Trump as a useful idiot while Mueller does his thing in the background.

Once he's charged with something though, the knives come out.

Ryan spent his morning huffing and puffing that Dems were putting politics first only to have Trump say "do what the Dems say" hours later. Amazing 16D Chutes and Ladders

The level of animosity people have towards Pelosi and now McConnell is built over many years. It's not as automatic and instantaneous as you make it seem.

Schumer was made Minority Leader this year and his approval ratings are already terrible.

Replacing Pelosi with someone new would eliminate the drag on the party for about a week.

Random Human

They were trying to grab your prize. They work for the mercenary. The masked man.
Maybe Dems realized if you butter Trump up he'll always take your side?

Weird day.

Trump doing something for seemingly no reason at all still surprises you?
He's not literally a random number machine and it's not out of the ballpark to assume he'd try to make headway on his number one campaign issue. I presume the past few weeks of frustration has let him take a step back, refocus on his actual goals, and put his energy into things he came into office to do (tear up trade deals and ship college kids back to Nicaragua).

Trump is a living cartoon character, you're giving him too much credit assuming he's actually a functioning human.

It's always made sense to me that given the opportunity, Pelosi and Schumer could walk all over Trump in a room together.

2 sentences from Trump’s gaggle on AF1 that are extremely telling: he said "We had a very good meeting with Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer."

Trump: “[A]lways we’ll agree on debt ceiling automatically because of the importance of it.” That’s something, from a Republican president
Looks like Schumer and Pelosi took advantage of the fact that Trump's relationship with the GOP is poor. Trump supposedly hasn't talked to McConnell in weeks. Pelosi and Schumer caught wind of that and took advantage of the situation. Granted this is Trump so who really knows with anything.

Actually there was a story that he met w/ McConnell yesterday. Don't know the outcome though.

This means DACA passes. Because with the debt limit expiring around Christmas, they pretty much have the GOP at gun point because the Freedom caucus is crazy.

McCain backs Graham-Cassidy ObamaCare repeal effort

http://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/349462-mccain-backs-graham-cassidy-obamacare-repeal-effort

Don't count on McCain.

He at the time called repeatedly for the Senate to return to "regular order," meaning a bill would go through a committee first.

"If it's not through regular order than it's a mistake, but it doesn't mean I wouldn't vote for it," McCain said when asked about his previous statements.

Ok, ideas:

"Trump, did you know Obama was terrible about authorizing the use of drones? TERRIBLE DEAL. What if we made a big amazing and beautiful deal that said we weren't going do that? The ratings would be great."

"Trump, did you know Obama was terrible about working too closely with big Wall-Street turds (you know, the ones that won't let you into their club?) like Tim Geithner? TERRIBLE DEAL. What if we made a big amazing and beautiful deal that said we weren't going do that? The ratings would be great."

"Trump, did you know Obama was terrible about the war on drugs? TERRIBLE DEAL. What if we made a big amazing and beautiful deal that said we weren't going do that? The ratings would be great."

etc etc

Work with the devil you know?
