To be fair, this a dedicated gaming device that's a (likely overpriced) midgen refresh aimed at the tech autists, it should be able to do what is common on the PC. At this point I'm really struggling to see the point of it.
I still have a PS4. Got a powerful gaming PC. I need something for the living room. I want the best that there is at a decent price.

Sounds like the Pro is perfect for me, no?

Do we really need to go beyond 60FPS?
Graphics and gameplay is more important than frames IMO.

Going beyond 60fps helps with motion clarity/resolution on modern displays (stuff like black frame insertion helps but that induces flicker and dims the screen).

The bolded part... "likely overpriced"....

Explain that, please.

This is me trying to give you the benefit of the doubt.

Hard to say overpriced when will be at least 2x cheaper than any pc with similar graphics capabilities
Yeah, although it is probably fair to say PlayStation (and Xbox) get punished in value assessment because they've traditionally offered so much in relative terms for so little - because console install base and platform cut have been measures of success - now that selling hardware has become a risker and less cost effective proposition - against a backdrop of overpriced £1500 smartphones and GPUs - any attempts they make to offset that risk with higher console pricing is unfairly framed as overpriced.

I want a cheap Pro model, but by the same token if they decide to price it at £849(£769 without the disc drive) and use the profits to sell base PS5s at £269 with a disc drive I wouldn't consider the Pro overpriced and poor value for money.

/edit
IMO at the end of the day, those of us that have to have a Pro will justify the price if we can afford it, but for the good of gaming we all really need new next-gen owners at the bottom getting onboard, and even at such a low price many that are disengaging or going straight with iPhone/PC would need a price like that or better to get in.

Why? By the time it comes out it will be dated. Better off waiting for PS7
When the PS5 Pro releases, we'll be soon after talking about wanting a PS6.

Especially if Microsoft really release their next-generation in 2026. That's 2 years of threads begging for the PS6 and how the PS5 Pro was a mistake as it made the PS5 generation longer.

It's a never ending cycle to want more power, just like how rich people always want more money despite not needing it.

I know I am way in the minority camp but give me an option to buy a beastly 5090 powered $4000 PS6 and let me skip the mid gen refresh

Plus give me true ultrawide support :)

Maybe at least you can give as a hint when we,the mortal ones, can expect some new information?
We all know ,that you know,so.....

When you think about it, consoles are insanely cheap devices. Especially looking at the fact that device can last for 3+ years.
There are a lot of things I upgrade much sooner than 3+ years so 100% agree they are a very cheap for what people get out of them

Plus with how long cross gen lasts now look how much mileage people are getting out of their PS4s still.

The speculation about no disc drive has me convinced its time to play the last game I have on disc that hasn't been beaten yet.

Pro getting ultra with PSSR
Even if it technically could, I doubt it since most console titles don't use Ultra settings for optimization purposes. Also, the differences between High and Ultra are likely to be negligible.

I don't know what there is to not like about the pro. If you already own a PS5 like me you can recoup half of the cost by selling it on. It's the same with pc part.

Sold my 6800 bought a 7900GRE, end cost to me was £280.

Sold ps4 pro for £250, end cost of PS5 was about £200.

Who doesn't want double the performance for £200 ish money. It's a no brainer as far as I am concerned.

I haven't been keeping up - any rumors on when the PS5 Pro will get officially announced? Is anyone thinking it will be delayed into 2025?

The same crowd who think 30 FPS is perfectly fine.

I'm predicting an announcement timeline similarly to the PS4 Pro. Announced on 7-Sept and released on 10-Nov.

If the PS5 Pro doesn't have a frame gen option, I would consider it a huge miss and borderline failure on Mark Cerny.

I remember PS5/Series X end up the 30 fps cicle, but now we got devs and tech saying putting 30 fps games is an artistic choise.

PS5pro will have the same fate.

I guess you can't rule out something unforeseen but I really doubt a delay to 2025. We know games are now being patched and the dev kits have been out since last year (incidently for me this would make Pro being 6nm very likely IMO).

I really think an announcement could come as soon as next week.

Look closely and you'd fine some pretty cool insights here. I bet you $1 that the PS5 Pro will be roughly equivalent to the "Performance" preset here :messenger_winking: (hint: base PS5 is closest to the "High" preset here)

IIRC, base PS5 is comfortably in the high 80s in performance mode at locked 1440p native. The performance setting looks extremely unambitious for Pro, even if running native 4k

Yes it may, but this gen has had mostly the option of a 60 FPS option. I would rather have a pro that can sustain that better with higher resolution. Technology moves it's why we upgrade our pc every few years. I want that option with consoles.

All current-gen platforms support FSR3 frame-generation already.
I'm thinking more of a post processed frame gen solution like Fluid Motion Frames/Lossless Scaling built in as a system option. Artifacts and latency aside, it requires zero work from the game developers point of view and can be retroactively be used on any game.

Incidentally, Sony sent out the press invites to that Sept 7th event on the 9th August 2016. That's why I think a similar announcement could be imminent for PS5 Pro.
This time around, I don't think we'll know like before. Sony has been very secretive about Playstation stuff this time around.

If it wasn't for Tom Henderson, we'll be in the complete dark on most of the PS5 Pro stuff.

Was it Henderson that leaked the dev-docs?
That's where most of the info came last time around before the announcement too - someone actually leaked the dev-net docs.

Generally I agree but actually in the case of a console launch Sony with the PS5 were much more open I thought. We got the April 2019 Wired article and then the Mark Cerny deep dive in March 2020. Not saying they will do similar for the Pro but at the same time I would be surprised if they just did a blog post or SoP.

Well, it's 3 in all, Tom Henderson, MLiD and DF, with Tom being the first leak parts of it.

Kepler_L2 has sources within AMD, so he knew parts of the setup, but he doesn't have the document.
