Quantum Break PC performance thread

I uploaded a let's play of the entire first Act:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dN1U8-SEM_I

I've been playing the PC version (i6700k, 16gb RAM, GTX 970, SSD) and overall the framerate seems pretty smooth, well above 30fps at a combo of medium and high settings. The game looks stunning but is being held back by the non native resolution which is painfully obvious and makes for a blurry IQ. In cutscenes it seems like this rendering technique isn't always used and you get a glimpse of how the game should look on PC - glorious. Hopefully this is patched and the film grain is removed.

Impressions from the actual game:

Story seems pretty decent so far.
Gunplay is absolutely fantastic (I expect no less from Remedy)
The time manipulation powers are so much fun.
Soundtrack is solid and presentation overall is brilliant (outside of IQ).

Also
Alan Wake 2 trailer
easter egg near the start was soon good, it's in the video for those interested.

Can't wait to play some more. While the PC port isn't great it looks far better than the console alternative from footage i've seen there and runs smoother too, at least for me, so I wouldn't dissuade people from buying it too much. If you can stomach the price and go in with the right expectations that is.

No. The issue is that UWP games do not actually run in real exclusive full-screen. It's just windowed mode, basically (borderless window) which doesn't support things like this anyways.

Really? That's a shame. RTSS seems to work with both bordered and borderless window games for me, even adding the overlay to windowed games:
g8iKlsv.jpg

The FPS and frametime are consistent with games I've had issues with in the past. I always use the Global setting and just switch it on and off when needed.

I'll defer to the expert though! Any chance of a QB PC analysis soon?

RTSS doesn't work with UWP.
NV's driver limiter works but it doesn't help with smoothing the frametimes.
Game's own 30 fps limiter works but it doesn't help with frametimes either and there seems to be some input issues happening when you enable it.

I can confirm that, tried to lock the fps with nvidia inspector and i got a far worse input lag than before... Besides the game was still running like sh*t.

sod that, considering all the problems the PC version has and the added layer of excrement that is UWA I won't bother waiting and just play the XBone version in all its 720p(ish) glory.

pcgh continues to update their article. seems like another heavily amd favored game. a 390 is matching an overclocked 980ti in frametimes. a fury is ahead.

What gets me the most is not even the upscale blurriness - this actually looks kinda ok considering the overall game's styling - but how the light source halos are staying visible through the main character for a second or two when the lights get behind him. This is just some temporal rendering console optimized bullshit I can't play the game with.

Example number one, notice the remaining light pole halo on his back:

SSRs seems to be rather cheaply implemented as well - anything which isn't seen on the screen is disappearing from reflection the moment it exits the screen. Sometime it's pretty jarring:

Then there's the constant flickering noise on the reflective window surfaces. I mean, this isn't supposed to happen, right? Or is there some explanation for this in the game's plot?

No wonder with that quality of PC version optimization - GCN cards will natively run the game better than anything else.

Is there a link to this? Are there any more tests where they use an AMD card to compare instead on an nVidia one?

Is there any way to remove the grain filter and render the res natively so the IQ isn't so soft?

No to the first part and as for the second - you can downsample from your native resolution x1.5 to get it to essentially render in your native resolution. As for the results of such manipulations - you be the judge.

Here's the downsampling from 4K to 2560x1440 (and "native" 2560x1600 for the reference on the right):

It's sharper obviously but not by much in my view as there's still a shit ton of pointless postprocessing crap happening to the frame. And the performance is obviously awful as what's happening in the left screenshot is this: rendering the game in 2560x1440 with MSAA 4x, upscaling it to 4K in the engine and then downscaling it back to 2560x1440 with the driver.

It looks a lot better to me, but obviously we shouldn't have to decimate our performance to get the game to render correctly. Really hope this is fixed because I do want to get/play this game.

guys, stupid question i'm sure, but i seriously can't get windows 10 to let me change the default install drive for w10 store games.

i try choosing my D drive, and it just defaults back to C [tiny SSD for OS only] after i click apply...

really not sure what to do!

Hey guys, sorry if I missed the answer to this, but big thread.

I have a pretty good PC, but the game's running like shit for me. What can I do to optimize it while keeping the graphics as not-minimum as possible?

My PC:

GTX 980
i7-6700K 5.0GHZ
32GB DDR4 RAM
Windows 10 [duh]

Playing on 2560x1440.

No wonder with that quality of PC version optimization - GCN cards will natively run the game better than anything else.

People at /r/AMD aren't having much issues with this game. I think 390s are running this game better than 980ti's overclocked.

But since 80% of players are on Nvidia I guess...I mean even on here there were no bad reports from the AMD users. Anyway with AMD can confirm?

What happens if you try moving an existing WinStore app (Settings>System>Installed Apps) to that drive? I you don't have any other apps, maybe get Twitter or something small then try moving it, default apps can't be moved.

That is also present in the Xbox One version. There some cut scenes like you describe where it seems like it is rendering at a higher resolution and very clean AI.

Thanks for the info. i'm on the low end of high end with an i7 and 970 so I may not be able to downsample without massive performance issues but i may give it a go as the IQ is kind of messing the experience up a tad. Really shocked Remedy put it up like this, and sad if MS forced them too, because otherwise it would be one of the best looking games out there.

I may be one of the few who actually owns the game in this thread so I wanted to throw in my experience so far.

I've played about roughly 2-3hours into the game now.

My rig is:
i7 4770k Overclocked
760 GTX 2gb (Piece of crap)
16gb ram
2TB SSHD

In any case, its all been rather smooth. The game detected that my system is on the low spectrum and, it would be correct, so I just left it there. It plays fine. Only a stutter when leaving a cutscene and transitioning to gameplay.

Look yes, the image quality (IQ) is not that sharp but I think that's because it was a stylistic and engineering choice, not some thing inherently wrong with the port.

There are alot of good things to say. The game launches instantly, and loads unbelievably fast. Animations are great in the game. Its a fun game overall. Great acting, and voicing.

Also, closing it easy. I'm not sure why there were any worries about being able to close it in the first place. If you bring your mouse to the corner, it instantly shows an X to close. Do you guys typically get stuck in Win10 apps, lol?

Just stick with the preset the game decides for you. Honestly, you could lose the AA and crank up the texture some and have it perform better/the same, but the overall appearance would be better.

I find whats in bold to be lacking in a lot of these MS PC releases lately. Many who don't own nor have played the game have a lot to say about it.

If you consider this pretty picture as a "no issue" then ok, sure:

Frametimes-R9-Fury---1440p-pcgh.png

390 is running the game somewhere aroung 40 fps in 1080p - I don't know how's that considered in r/AMD either but to me this seems rather low for what is essentially being rendered in 720p to be presented in 1080p.

From my own experience the game is kinda playable in 2560x1600 on an OCed 980Ti but the framerate is far from smooth and is probably around 40'ish-50'ish on all maxed.

Broke down and bought the game this morning, like the impulsive fuck I am. My interest in this game was too high, I started to gain a morbid curiosity towards this port, and whether I could deal with it's shortcomings. I will be testing shit later, so I'll tell you my experience. My rig:

GTX 970 w/mild OC
i7 980x @ 4.0GHZ
12GB DDR3 @ 1600mhz

Probably going to lock the shit to 30fps right off the bat, I want to see if the frame pacing is at all tolerable. If not, well I'll be seeking a refund immediately from Microsoft support lol.

6700k, Titan X (sli, not that it matters) and 16 gigs of ram, this game does not look or feel good at 1080p. Forget about the slideshow 4k is.

The disappointing thing is that you can tell there are some amazing looking assets under all of that graininess. Like, there is a very near parallel universe where this is one of the best looking games around.

was waiting for this long time, so had to buy it.
i have
cpu:4690k @4.2
gpu:970@1400mhz
ram:16gb
(its pretty much the recommended specs plus a bit of overclock)

so completed the first act here's the impressions
game deafulted itself to medium and i didnt bother much with the settings.
performance wise it felt good (like a stable 1080p60)
but yeah it is definitely grainy and doesn't feel like a sharp 1080p image.
still it looked pretty good in motion from time to time.

i have a not so good 4mps connection. first video episode streamed okayish.
some action heavy scenes became kinda jumpy and video quality lowered from time to time but it completed without a pause.

game feels good at the time. action was kinda fresh with time powers and the story/side materials are interesting to follow.

So can I expect 60 fps @1080p on high settings with 980ti and i7 6700k? I have been waiting this game for so long, I really hope that my PC is capable of running it at 60 fps.

Man, I was really looking forward to this game.

Hope performance patches and GSYNC support come next month because I refuse to play it in it's current state, even with a Titan X.

Well, I'll be quick: I'm interested by the game, I can get it for 15€, but I'm worried that with my old rig I can't run it at all...

So, with: i7 3770k (@3.50ghz), GTX 660ti (yes...), 16Go DDR3. Can I hope to run the game, at low? Middle? I play on a 1080p screen and 30fps would be really enough for me.
I know that my GPU is really weak but I don't plan to change it anytime soon, I would just like to play this game, even though it's on medium or even some low settings.

Thanks!

I'll start to go back through the thread, as i am sure this might have been answered.

But... how do i install this game on to a different drive? Right now it tells me i don't have enough space. Which is true on C:. I went to storage and change the new apps to be installed on to a different drive.

Any thoughts?

You know what this is? This is Dark Souls 1. This is a publisher saying "What? You wanted it on PC, it's on PC, what's the big deal?"

I'm baffled at things like the reconstruction techniques. PC doesn't need console's tricks to eke out a bit more performance, and we don't want it. We've never wanted it. Give us menu options to turn down, don't force BS like this on us.

I hope shit like this makes UWA die a quick death, so this will end before it gets any more out of hand.

15 euros?

It's hard for a lot of us to really have any input while we wait a week+ for our PC codes :3

Yep, this certainly reminds me of Dark Souls 1. Hopefully, some patches can resolve the largest issues.

NVM... i guess i found the answer.

On the queue i had to scrap the original download, and then set it to download again for it to read the new drive. Kinda dumb, even if it makes sense.

How do i install all the 70 gigs? right now its only 40 something gigs.

havent read through the entire thread but whoever claimed he was getting 60 is probably wrong or using low settings

For some reason my performance takes a decent hit when running Mirillis Action, but even with it on I'm getting a 50+ fps at 1080P / ultra (the HUD overlay is super small lmao): http://sendvid.com/43fc3muk PresentMon shows my FPS to fluctuate between 57-60.

This is on PC with i5-4690K, gtx 970 and 16gb ram system
