Report: Marathon Delay Likely as Sony Cancels All Paid Marketing Plans

James Sawyer Reaction GIF

Until or unless marathon is something revolutionary like seige was , in the start I don't see it making out alive
This has concord 2 written all over it.
They can put in on playstation +, gamepass day 1still I don't think It would still retain the player base or save it judging from what I've seen

Doubt this is a delay. This means Sony has discovered that they do not need to pay anything to advertise the game anymore, as the game has reached its maximum potential exposure. Besides, we have Playstation fans helping to advertise without charge. So why not save the money that isn't going to do anything
Marathon threads seem to attract a lot of attention, so you could be right.

Just cancel it at this point, a delay won't save it.
Let them suffer some more, we dont wanna get another "gaas initiative" next gen with ps6, sony has to be uterly demolished by gaas failure to learn from it, they cant get any glimpse of hope, for that they need to lose humongous mountain of money, thats the only way they can learn.

They need to delay it for a year or two and make a PVE mode at the very least. Extraction shooters are just for sweats and the hardcore.

But on the other hand the damage has already been done and nobody cares for this game. The marketing for Marathon and the game itself is just half baked right now. It doesn't help that Bungie has been caught, yet again stealing other peoples work and passing off as their own. Utter shambles up in Bungie. I'm sure Sony are livid at the whole situation, if they weren't already.

Bungie has a history of stealing other people's work, they fully deserve that shit. Is it so hard to have someone verify the sources for all the creative work? You know, to make sure that nothing disrupts a multi-million project?
Supposedly the art director Joseph Cross and some others at Bungie were actively following the artist (AntiReal). So it looks like they were blatantly just copying someone else's homework - so to speak. Even down to the music taste. And tried to pin the blame on some phantom employee when the whole crew was likely in on it. Shameless.

This is beyond horrible. A delay is a must at this point. People's reception isn't well to begin with and add on top of that the art theft

Just delay it ffs :messenger_grinning_smiling:

To me, the right thing to do for sony is to internalize bungie in to playstation studios america, cancel this mess of a game, and let bungie make destiny 3 AND a 30 to 40 hour single player halo spiritual successor with a pvp mode

I don't think you understand; the people who could make a spiritual successor to Halo don't work at Bungie anymore. Pete Parsons got rid of them all. Bungie is a skinsuit.

But... what if they try EXTRA on GAAS hard next gen and charge $800 for PS6 to make up for their PS5 gaas failures?

Someone is gonna pay for Sony's failures and it ain't Sony. It's the consumer.

None of Bungie's problems are on Sony. It takes minimal effort to see what Sony actually paid for, and who actually has been in control at Bungie for all this time.

Also, if you understand the economics of the games market, you'll see why Sony had no choice but to try and expand into the GaaS market. There has been no growth in the core gaming segment for well over a decade. Peak console Install bases are not growing, while production and publishing costs have risen substantially.

That Sony exec who said "all we need is one big GAAS o cover the rest" assumed that hit game would be Fortnite levels of success AND any bombs would be reasonably low costs. He never imagined at the time of Bungie bombing, high cost Concord, and most studios/games cancelled.

He thought at the time if 10 new GAAS come out, if 1 is a big hit and the other 9 breakeven-ish and shut down, that the one winner still leads to big profits.

It's like stocks. He buys 10 stocks. As long as one is a giant gainer that should be enough to increase the portfolio as long as the other 9 picks are so so. Problem is, 9 stocks all dropped 50-100%. So even though his one great pick is +300%, it's still not enough to cover the rest.
I think in this case is more like spending 1 million dollars on lotery tickets hoping to get that 500 mil price ... sure your odds are much better but they still are completely shit ... buying up studios and making your studios do gaas all around hoping for the next fortnite billionaire money maker is insane .... you can hope to make good games like helldivers 2 that are successful but in the end thats it, not some billionaire juggernaut, this things are lightning in the bottle. Its an insane strategy. Specially when you became market leader doing exactly the contrary.

They've brought on a massive bump in costs onto themselves and have legitimately taken some of their own studios out from the draw for a decade because of their choice. They made the wrong one.

Sony should finally realize that it's possible to make a money printing Maschine, but it's really rare and very hard to do considering what is already on the market.

But what is probably going on in their heads is: Oh well not this time, but our next GaaS game is for sure the golden goose…

But what is really worrying me, is that it took actual player feedback to realize that it's not ready yet. There seems to be no one within Sony who can tell if a game is actually good or not.

Three scenarios likely:

1. Getting cancelled
2. Adding PVE
3. Making it free-to-play (and then taking it offline after 6 months)
Adding PVE would take more time unless you're talking about keeping the same garbage gameplay loop with no PVP…. (I like Tarkov)

Truth is the game isn't good and the gameplay mechanics don't fit an extraction shooter.

The game is just bad and won't attract anyone….

Even O'Donnell is kind of mocking them on Twitter right now.

This why "investing" into the belief that a studio's culture or creative force will remain the same over time is foolish. Especially, once they begin gutting long time talent and creators who made the studio name what it was. Other leaderships around the industry should either learn from this or be frightend by it (since they're past the point where they've done it themselves).

I'm not.
This is the best timeline, less GaaS the better.
The problem isn't GAAS….

The problem that these big companies are having is the same issue with the comic book industry… It's women coming into a male dominated space and feminist men….

Ask yourself why we are getting a Ghost of Yotei and not Tsushima 2? At least with Ghost you can copy and paste most gameplay mechanics don't won't be bad.

Sony has been cancelling single player games too…

Have some of you not noticed Sony likes making games for blind people and people with no arms….

They wouldn't let DayZ bring their game to PlayStation without highlighting names on proximity chat so that players could get reported…

You're not getting PVP games made for men by Sony… They are refusing to give us Socom….

All their main characters are women outside of Kratos…

Totally.

Funny how the second Sony buys them, maybe a year later suddenly Bungie financials tank 45%, Marathon is looking to be a disaster, and who knows if there's even a Destiny 3 coming. we all need stock tips from Pete Parsons because he knows when to sell at the high.

Whatever business slides and games under dev (like Marathon) they showed Sony execs must had been so impressive it was worth $3.6B. There is now way IMO some Destiny 2 DLC, Marathon and their GAAS expert wisdom is worth that much. They either totally fudged their financials, promoted Marathon extraction shooter as a giant killer game, and topped it off showing how perhaps a Destiny 3 in the works will lead to a gazillion sales.

Then again, maybe Sony was just so amped up on GAAS with endless money greenlit by the CEO that Jim and Hermen just didnt give a shit and bought up as many GAAS studios they could while not fairly evaluating the acquisitions as they really are.
The acquisition was a panick move from Jim Ryan after knowing Microsoft would acquire Activision. It was not driven by logic rationale and thorough due diligence.

Terrible business decision imho, probably one of the worst M&A decision ever

Does Nintendo not understand the economics of the games market? They don't do GAAS and they are laughing all the way to the bank with what will be the best selling console ever and software that sells laps around other console manufacturers.

Just delay it indefinitely. It's probably what's best at this point. Now that Xbox games are coming to ps5, it's probably natural for them to start on another Halo.

Coz secret behind "modern audience" is- its for female audience, products targeted to women are utter trash in men's eyes, there is a reason only time man watches romantic comedy genre is when he is about to fuck woman who is watching it with him, that is the only reason we are willing to suffer tru this shit, to get access to sex =D
TLDR: If u want avg male gamer to buy ur "modern audience" products better make sure he is getting laid every time he has to buy it, think of it as a selling a bundle, otherwise it will be flop after flop :)

Still impossible to believe the vaulted Bungie decided to make an extraction shooter instead of a full fledged Destiny 3. Pathetic really.

This isn't exactly news though.

This was already hot topic during the launch of Destiny 1.
It's also why Activision pulled out of the Destiny-deal with Bungie.

As for a delay, I don't mind. Let em sort things out.

This is new for anyone that got interested in Marathon because it's an extraction shooter, but weren't interested in Destiny. Personally I've not been interested in Bungie since Myth II, so hearing these stories about toxic workplace and tone-deaf leadership has been eye-opening for me. It makes sense considering the situation they're in.

Also, it is piling up on the already huge, negative PR heap and adds to the 'rock and a hard place' situation Bungie got themselves into. Cancel the game now and dump their investment, or delay and pump more budget into the project, when the game will likely do bad numbers, also due the competition of Arc raiders.

What console? Their last console was wiiu and it was laughed all the way to the trash bin.

A huge chunk of the acquisition money was for employee retention, though, to head off this exact thing.

What Sony didn't realize though, or didn't want to realize, is that Bungie has been a garbage company full of shysters for a long-ass time and this shit is just part and parcel.

"This information comes from Colin Moriarty."

Seriously though I thought this dude left gaming years ago to spread the gospel of politics or something. 😂 I had no idea he was back on the gaming side.
Runs the biggest PlayStation podcast on earth and multiple other gaming podcasts. I think they are making easily a few million dollars a year. He never left gaming, last stand media is about the only "games journalism" I listen to because it's not full of absolute shite. Just a nuanced podcast with a lot of industry details that many other outlets brush over or ignore.

Colin knows more about the games industry than a lot of people even though he does have some hot takes.

Nintendo have done as well as they have only by folding their console and handheld console businesses together.

DS did 150m units (2004-2016). Switch (2017-) did 150m units. Wii did 101m units (2006-2011). Wii-U 13.5m units (2012-2017)

If you look at total hardware sales over the lifetimes of both families, and add on top non-mobile console offers over the same period, you'll see a constant downward trend on total hardware units sold.

Remember, hardware isn't a major profit driver. It only matters insofar as having enough hardware to shift proprietary software is the important part.

By consolidating down to single SKU's for their multi-million selling first-party franchises Nintendo have made their business more efficient and profitable, but they haven't really grown the larger market at all.

That kind of doesn't work once they're way, way past having a major chunk of significant key people in their workforce. Bungie is well past its creative prime. The people who made it what it was, brought them widespread acclaim, as well as established their positive rep, have been rotated out a long time ago. The current leadership really took Sony for a ride with that clause. They've been riding on the glory days of the old Bungie crew and harvesting the benefits from that perception.

This is Jim Ryans legacy. LMAO

Out of all the things they could have made, they choose a GAAS trash shooter. lmfao.

You were bought by fucking SONY/PLAYSTATION. Make a goddamn New AAA Single Player IP with a significant MP component... You know.. Like HALO.

these idiots deserve all their failure. This is what happens when you chase nothing but money and trends. Now your studio will be a laughing stock and probably shut down. Good riddance, retards.
