SDCC: Last of Us movie announced.

I like Hugh Jackman as Joel. They look pretty similar (at least in the movie Prisoners):

I'm curious about length. TLoU was a 15+ hour game, with the cutscenes clocking over three hours if I recall.

Gonna be curious how they pace it and what they cut.

I'd imagine they could cut out the prologue as that could be simply gleened from some dialog and general actions from Joel in the movie as to what happened in the past to make him the way he is.

Druckman and ND are writing the script? That's actually pretty cool.

I mean...they already wrote the script. Unless it is going to be something else in the universe? When it comes to making movies out of these already heavily "interactive cinematic experiences" why go looking for directors? Hire Druckman for Last of Us, hire Kojima for MGS....they have already done it properly.

But yeah, I don't really think cinematic games like these should even be movies. Seems like trying to convert them into movie form actually would take away from what made them great in the first place.

I agree, looks is the last thing on the totem pole when choosing an actor for this. They have to act like Joel, all the quirks and mannerisms that he has.

I also agree with looks not being everything for casting. But to reference this movie again, Prisoners has Jackman acting very Joel-esque: with his brutality, desperation to get his daughter back, and the way he takes matters into his own hands. And the fact that they look the same doesn't hurt either :p

Eh... As a game, it had a decent plot and was enjoyable because how cinematic it was... I just don't see it sticking out from all the other zombie movies Hollywood has released. I'd love to be proven wrong, though.

I could live with Maisie Williams, but Emma Watson matches the looks!

I think Emma Roberts would also be good, that said, I half expect someone pretty unknown --- Ellie is 14, it's hard to play that young unless you are that young. And not many people that age are well known. Hence -- There's a good chance of it being an unknown.

Right but I mean the studios always get a screen writer to adapt someone else's work be it books or video games and I can't think off the top of my head where an adaptation of a video game was written directly by those involved with the game.

So much confusion in this thread. Looks like everybody missed the link to the liveblog that I posted earlier. Okay I made a recap of comingsoon.net's liveblog. This should hopefully clear up some questions.

- Neil and Bruce got two pitches, one from Clint Culpepper at Screen Gems and one from Sam Raimi
- Neil said when they met with Sam he "really got it"
- They got greenlight from Screen Gems to write the film themselves: Neil's writing the script for the movie
- Movie won't come out for a couple of years
- They expect it to be very true to the game, but they have to make changes to make a 15 hour game fit into a movie
- They talked about a different ending among various changes
- The movie will focus on the relationship between Joel and Ellie
- Answering a question, they say they might use elements from the Left Behind DLC
- Maisie Williams is being considered for Ellie
- Bruce Campbell sorta brought up as a joke, someone suggests him for David (NOT casted for Joel)
- Neil thinks the "ambush" would make for a great scene in the movie
- They're creating new scenes to glue some of their favourite game scenes together
- Neil doesn't want to the movie to be a poor imitation of the game, thinks it's good to have strong actors who bring their own interpretation to the characters
- Sam said he won't be directing, Neil will be in charge of selecting director

Yep, Jackman is Joel in that movie.

And also think of a good movie based off a game. That's what I'm getting at. The previous method hasn't been working.

I've not seen that so I'm going to have to find it and watch it this weekend. Maybe it will change my mind about him.

Thank you~
So basically, we didn't get too much new. I hope the Maisie thing holds out and becomes true.
