SDCC: Last of Us movie announced.

Okay, so I knew Druckmann was writing the script, which is incredible but he also gets to choose the director?? Holy shit, this might be good!

Josh Brolin has been my choice for Joel since the game came out. He'd be so good.

I can see that...

I think Emma Roberts would also be good, that said, I half expect someone pretty unknown --- Ellie is 14, it's hard to play that young unless you are that young. And not many people that age are well known. Hence -- There's a good chance of it being an unknown.

Maisie is hardly unknown.

What? No it isn't. Most definitely focuses on both characters, but if you're going to single one out it's Ellie.

Nope.

Debateable.

It really don't think it is, ultimately Ellie is a huge part of the story, but her entire fate lies in the hands of Joel. Ellie was looking for a father figure, but you don't see much of an Arc from her as you do with Joel. Clearly shown with the opening scene and how much that impacted joel, which ultimately decides how it would all play out. Ellie is just along for the ride.

I think Emma Roberts would be anatural fit *IF* she's not starting to outage the part -- Not that she looks old by any stretch, but, again, 14 is really young.

can a 23 year old play 14? might they up the age of ellie's character a couple years? not sure on both fronts.

I kinda wish they would do a different story than the same as the game's. But you can't have a The Last of Us movie without Joel and Ellie, and I imagine the best "sequel" stories will obviously go to the games.

So it's kind of a sticky spot.

Maisie as Ellie makes me kinda happy though, if it happens. She'll have a year or so to learn how to fake an American accent, so that shouldn't be a problem.

As much as I love TLoU and adore Bruce Campbell, him as Joel is utter bullshit.

Brolin or Jackman would be epic. Campbell is too much of of a clown archetype for me to take him seriously as a character like Joel.

He's not up for Joel's role. They basically joked about the possibility of him playing David. No one was mentioned as a possibility for Joel.

Definitely would go for Joelin over Jackman. But honestly if Druckmann is in charge of casting he'll probably make the best decision.

Funnily enough we were talking about movie castings in the Remastered thread and I brought up Anson Mount for Joel.

Since the movie announcement this comes across my feed. lol

Agree with this so much. People make the Ellen Page joke all the time but honestly to me Ellie and Ashley's faces are interchangeable despite not actually *looking* the same. I can't see one without the other.

Holy shit what game were you playing.

The same one you were?
after his daughter dies, Joel disappears from everything he knows and goes rogue, even when he first meets ellie he is only doing it in exchange for something, he really can't be bothered with her. His connection is obviously made through his experience with his daughter, and slowly, but surely allows himself to open up to the possibility of facing that pain again. He's faced with a choice, suffer again or potentially save the world, and he chooses to follow his vow to never let it happen again.

- Neil doesn't want to the movie to be a poor imitation of the game, thinks it's good to have strong actors who bring their own interpretation to the characters

That fine, but I think they should keep the first 10-15 minutes of the game as the opener.

With the right talent, there wouldn't be a dry eye in the house.

Seriously, Anson Mount would be perfect. The guy is amazing and would be fantastic as Joel.

Yeah I agree. They talked about that at the panel actually. Sam Raimi encouraged Neil to keep the opening of the film very similar to the opening of the game, so that gives me hope.

Sorry, but Ashley doesn't really look like Ellie. It is only the voice you are after...

She really does, though. Watch some of her mo-cap stuff and her facial expressions. Her eyes. You can see absolutely see that shine through in Ellie, even though the animations were hand drawn. They used Ashley as a reference point.

Haha, I guess they need a real 14 yo or people will complain.

there are great actresses this age, but since it takes a few years to get "known", if they cast someone this age it'll be someone pretty unknown -- like I was saying. Which I'm perfectly fine with. I don't necessarily think it's always important to jam well known actors into established characters. Sometimes an unknown is great, even preferable.
