Speculation: Will the Switch 2 be more powerful than Ally X ?

The Z1 Extreme is more than 1 year old by now, but it can run all the current games ( even though at low settings ),

I wonder how Powerful the APU in Switch 2 is compared to the Z 1 extreme.

There is the price factor to be added too as Switch 2 wouldn’t be more than 400$ or at worse a 500$ console compared to how expensive something like the Rog Ally X.


Are there any leaked numbers or any indication of how powerful the Switch 2 is?

yes... at least docked. it will be anywhere between an RTX 3050 Mobile and an RTX 3050ti Mobile

(the test in this video/screenshot was without using DLSS, but instead using FSR2, which runs slower than DLSS)


we know it uses the Tegra T239.
the Tegra T239 has 1536 CUDA cores.

if we assume it runs at 1ghz when docked:
1000 × 1536 × 2 = 3.072.000 (3.072 TFLOPS)
clock × CUDA cores × 2
this falls in line with a mobile RTX 3050 (~2.916 TFLOPS)

if we assume it reaches the exact same clock speed that the Tegra X1+ (used in the Switch OLED) can reach (1.267ghz)
1267 × 1536 × 2 = 3.892.224 (3.892 TFLOPS)
clock × CUDA cores × 2
this falls in line with a mobile RTX 3050ti (~3.763 TFLOPS)

Nintendo are pretty much the last pure console company in the game, and they understand their assignment: deliver a cheap console and outstanding games. Given how under-powered the Switch ultimately is, I imagine the Switch 2 will perform on-par with the LCD Steam Deck, keeping it two generations behind the rest of the industry. With that said, if they're staying with NVidia, I would expect their platform-level AI upscaling to push its performance higher.

It will perform about the same as an RTX 2050 or an MX570 4GB with optimization.

And let's see at what clock speeds. The Switch was clocked considerably lower than everyone was expecting in order to keep battery life up and thermals down.

I'm also guessing we don't know anything yet about memory/IO/internal storage speeds etc? So real world performance is just guesswork.

We know it will have 12GB of LPDDR5X and 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage from leaked Vietnamese shipping data

No the chip for the switch 2 is like 5 years old already. It doesn’t have to be as powerful as long as it has features that maximize gaming! That said the rig cpu is better

It will obviously be a lot smarter in a meaningful way like when the current switch launched and that's what matters the most. Yes there's no doubt they'll look stupid after Nintendo announcing the switch 2.

IO speed shouldn't be a problem because the T239 has a dedicated decompression block. We don't know about clock speeds for the GPU and CPU, but considering the chip in it it definitely won't be as powerful as the Ally X, but it will have some features to make it punch above its weight like DLSS and dedicated ports on an optimized system.

I don’t think it will be more powerful than the PS4, to be honest. That's fine. Just don't reduce the battery life too much.
 
Is the Ally X profitable to Asus? I very strongly doubt it will be more powerful if Nintendo's main concern is profit. They will never sacrifice profitability for more power.

Exactly, that's what I'm saying 😄 there's also a lot of things Nintendo could do, but won't do.

But I'm also saying that it will have a very constrained power budget and that a lot of people here will get very, very disappointed. Expectations are all over the place.

The Z1E is a high end chip consisting of high performing CPU cores and 4nm RDNA3 CUs. Nvidia is not magic and Nintendo does not care about performance. The Ally X could never be sold for $400 and still hit a profit. Abandon these delusions.

Companies are eating into their terrain and people are emulating Switch in more powerful devices, the only way they can get away from that is by making another unique feature or make Switch 2 powerful enough to delay emulation and to prevent companies to make their competing products look more appealing imo

I’d expect a huge jump from the current Switch, but nothing that competes with modern specs.

But hopefully it’ll be able to punch above its weight with DLSS etc.

The Switch is still selling, and those devices have been on the market for some time. I imagine Nintendo's not going to attempt to create security through obscurity; platform-level AI upscaling (presuming they remain on NVidia hardware) would already create difficulties for accurate emulation.

Yeah, that would contribute but I don't think they'd put all the eggs in a single basket, imo the Switch 2 being as powerful as speculated with leaked specs is powerful enough to close the competitors gap for a while, but it still looks too good to be true for many 😅

A 12SM nvidia GPU will outperform a 12CU Amd GPU in raw raster perf. But only at similar TDP, so it's going to come down to final clocks.

I'm willing to bet my lunch that it will launch at 499.99 USD.
It will sell along with the Switch 1 for quite a bit of time. Possibly 2 years. (Back compat and all that).
Then at some point they will stop making Switch 1 and lower the price of the Switch 2.

The Tegra is going to be crippled by piss poor bandwidth and cache size, next question. The Switch 2 will not be as performant (real world not theoretical FLOPs) as the mobile 3050 or the 3050ti, handheld or docked.

Hopefully. I must say that my steam deck was a major game changer and surely the best device I have. I really expect that Nintendo can get a powerful device.

In CPU, no. It will lose by a good margin. Now, when docked, Switch 2's GPU could potentially beat it (before DLSS).

It will perform better in docked mode, but yes Nintendo will want to buy the cheapest, smallest and reliable battery they can get away with. The only way to meet these engineering constraints is to compromise on discharge rate, I fully expect 10W system power in handheld mode and will be pleasantly surprised if it can be pushed to 15W.
