I'm late (as always, most stuff in this thread happens while I'm asleep) but I must say that Kuroko no Basket never tried to be realistic, not even for a second.
Dude, the chick could see players' stats flowing in the air around them when they take their shirt off. In the first fucking episode.
That's like the show telling you, right off the bat: "My goal is not a realistic portrayal of basketball."
Let my wish cross over time and be brought back into these hands
Believing in miracles Ill go towards a new door
Im always advancing towards the future
Alone in the midst of the pouring rain I pause on a hill
Drops of rain wet my cheeks with a fleetingly disappearing light
As I place a world blurred in blue before my eyes,
the unceasing headwind blows fiercely
With a quick pace I overtake the shadows of the flying clouds
as I dash through time
Breaking the endless spiral, I begin to run, searching for the light
Believing in miracles Ill go towards a new door
Im moving forwards while grasping onto this prayer
Let my wish cross over time
Come, return to these hands of mine
As I cut away my hesitation I open the way to my destination
I will stand and face the future again and again
Spilling from my up stretched palms they dissolved into the sunset
I knew that the shards of my childish dream would never return again
I wonder how far Ive come from
the place in the midst of my blue dyed memories
I walked alone on this endlessly continuing road searching for the light
If there is something that could
make the stopped clock hand rewind then
engrave what has been lost
into the continuously revolving cog of destiny
I will overcome this lament and the pain
and embracing the pride I have obtained to my chest, reach my destination
I will stand and fight again and again
Breaking the endless spiral, I begin to run, searching for the light
Believing in miracles Ill go towards a new door
Im moving forwards while grasping onto this prayer
Let my wish cross over time
Come, return to these hands of mine
As I cut away my hesitation I open the way to my destination
I will stand and fight again and again
Im always advancing forward
To the time when the light will shine
Towards the future
Right, that's what I'm talking about. You can figure out how things work if you read enough decent analysis and rewatch the show a few times, but it doesn't really matter in the end. Anno was far more concerned with the emotional and symbolic impact of scenes in Evangelion than if the expository crap spewing out of the character's mouths was reasonably comprehensible.
Exactly. The characters (and their emotional states) are the most important part of the show for Anno. A serendipitous by-product of having a lot of weird visuals and strange exposition is that you activate that part of a persons mind that loves to solve puzzles. This has kept the 'fandom', and by association discussion of the show itself, active for far longer than it ever should have been.
As humans we're always trying to take a vast array of complicated and irrational sensory data and form it into a cohesive, logical narrative with which we tell the story of our life. That desire to take all these desperate elements and craft them into something cohesive is exactly why people got so hung up on 'solving' Evangelion even though there was nothing to 'solve' to begin with. I guess that's even better though, because if it can't be solved then people will never stop trying to piece if all together.
Seriously entertaining episode. The notion of the generational feud was a solid foundation and even when a matter of pride, Lupin treating this like a game was too much fun. Toss in Gullimar's pride versus Zenigata's and what's left is a really solid ep with a hilarious conclusion. The entire ending heist sequence had me laughing hard.

Anno really is an evil genius. I guess it's a good thing he used his evil powers for something irrelevant like anime instead of something that could actually destroy people's lives.

It was probably just a case of Anno getting piss drunk one night and writing a bunch of bullshit that over the years has been interpreted to mean a million times more than he ever meant it to. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if that was actually true.
I have a different set of expectations for every show based on what it seems like they are going to deliver. The latest episode of Accel World was more enjoyable than KotS 11 for me.

The Fate/Zero Image Song Album "Prayer" that Articalys keeps linking to is indeed awesome. I heard it a few months ago, if you like Aoi Eir's voice from OP1 (Memoria), this whole album is performed by her.
It's deeper if it has no meaning because that means everyone can read into it however they'd like. There are an infinite number of viable interpretations!
The Top Anime of the 90's ANNcast was pretty painful.
This was pretty boring, I didn't get to finish it. It reminds me of those two other young animator training projects last year that weren't Kizuna or Ojisan. The forgettable ones.

Dusk Maiden's promo was a close up on Yuuko's boobs. So it has delivered on that promise early episode and even offered a brisk pace of plot advancement as as service.
Evidently I missed this extra episode so catch up time. With an overall runtime of about 8 minutes, it's a handful of 1 minute or so shorts that are random, perverse, disgusting, or perhaps all 3! One of the shorts actually made me ill with its concept which is rare as I usually have a high tolerance for this sort of thing. Not really worth a watch and I think I was happier not knowing it existed rather than reveling in extra content of which I was previously unaware.
In conclusion, yes, I'm a history major, and fantasy is my favorite genre. And that's why I hate anime and manga fantasy settings almost as much as I love them.
I wonder if that's just cultural, given that I'm sure Western fantasy has shit like ninjas and samurai and kung fu specialists all mixed together because the author thought that shit was cool. I'm trying to think of an anime fantasy that I watched and unless you count stuff like Brave 10 or FMA, I don't think I've watched any.
On the note of Saki though, but what about Nodoka, who insists that such powers aren't possible?
(Manga spoilers)
Of course, given Nodoka's somewhat average performance in her last couple of matches, maybe she should consider revising that opinion...)
But yes, in that world the powers are clearly real, whether or not Nodoka believes them. Even if you explain away Saki and Teru's stuff, Toki and Amae Koromo's leave no room for doubt. But yeah, I agree that it's reasonably internally consistent; the series doesn't present itself as existing in exactly this world.
Well, it's funny because she defeats invisible girl by simply saying she doesn't believe in superstition. Of course, her "skill" is being able to abstract a game to pure rules and mathematics.
That kind of thing CAN be annoying sometimes, though, even if it's expected and obviously wasn't thought about... not in every case, but certainly sometimes. But yes, the below is much worse.
The irony is, of course, I don't give a shit about sports so technically none of this crap should even bother me.
I used Angels in the Outfield last week, but I could also bring up Rookie of the Year, the premise of which is that some teenager breaks his arm and is suddenly the best pitcher in America and manages to join the local MLB team. That's something that will never happen in real life, but that film acknowledges that it's an impossible situation that only exists in the context of the film. It's not as if the MLB is full of 14 year old baseball stars, so having the main character be an exception - and given that everyone acknowledges that he's an exception - is at least perfectly consistent.
The film is also upfront about its premise, so it's not like you're watching a serious baseball movie that veers into insanity after the first act.
I know I responded to this earlier, pretty much, but I entirely agree about Stargate SG-1. I've never been a fan of conspiracy theory plots, so that was strike one against the series, but stuff like that really highlights how little thought really went into it. You're entirely right, ignoring all of those 9/11-related issues while they go on exploring the universe with alien technology is completely absurd. Stargate SG-1 really is a series that's only good when you pretend that the rest of the world doesn't exist, and it's just their team (not from Earth at all, or something) out there exploring the stars... but overall, I didn't love that series, and didn't usually watch it regularly, and the reasons why are more related to the conspiracy stuff as to anything else.
SG-1 got stupid because it had an actual conspiracy within the show made up of ex-CIA guys.
So you had these evil humans stealing tech for themselves and even THOSE guys ignored 9-11!
is when the episode lost me. Not that he can't have that reaction, but how that reaction actually happened and how it was depicted was just... well, janky like a Japanese game built on UE3.
Okay, this show is good now. Or at least, it's bearable. As bearable as any live action Sailor Moon produced with the budget and expertise of a live-action television series is going to be, anyway. It's fun!
I love some of the little details in these, like the party hats on Caster's monsters, Lancer's bubble pipes reflecting the colors of his spears, or the snow-Berserker nomming on Saber's arm.

I don't think he realised what he was doing at first - but he quickly cottoned on to it and by the time we arrived at Rebuild of Evangelion he had clearly decided to 'build' a mystery into the mythology of the show, rather than have a mystery arrive naturally as the result of 'bad writing'. It's quite fascinating, really.
I think Im the only one watching, but Hiiro no Kakera matched and exceeded my expectations. Apart from being brutally attacked by game loyalists in the fandom in the beginning elseware, the characters were better than I expected, being actually cool and memorable and the plot mlre intense and action packed than I thought.
Saint Seiya Omega as well, Its like everything I want in the genre and having old saints appear is definitely memorable.

this somehow managed to surprisingly be even shittier than your average beach episode and i wasn't even expecting this ep to be anything other than garbage to begin with.

Yeah, it's odd how something that's generally well made in all areas can be so dull. I mean, it's not Hyouka levels of dull but then again it doesn't look nearly as good as Hyouka.
