This is my first MMORPG and I'm a huge Star Wars fan. :lol

You will be fucked bro.

Gaming bliss at it's best, you will feel addiction like you never felt before from a entertainment source. I can tell already, this game is going to be HUGE if it delivers in the gameplay and content. I don't think that Bioware will fail.

Forget about any other games you play, The second you jump in you are not touching anything else for hell even up to YEARS. So sell your games/consoles etc because they will become paper weights. :lol

God knows that is true because that's what happened with me and WoW.. And I played Lineage 2 before it and Lineage 2 was pretty mediocre at best but still hooked me like a crackwhore.

I never understood MMO addiction. I played WoW for about 8-9 months in total. Got bored. quit. I played SWG for about 2 months. Got bored. quit.

I guess I don't have that crazy lust for loot. I just like cool looking armour not some shit that adds an extra +2 stamina. Doing the same instances over and over gets soooo boring as well. I honestly don't know what people do in WoW these days after playing from day 1.

I just sold my 360 so who knows. ;) I am about to buy a new graphics card because it's the only thing holding me back from getting great gaming performance from my PC so it's good to hear that this game is awesome. Plus after seeing those bad ass E3 trailers, I'm pumped.

It's the joy of collecting loot ya, and playing with friends, running instances killing bosses etc, and of course pvping if you where into that. Or collecting mats to play the auction house game, fishing, tradeskills development for items or perks you want, running 40/25/10 man raids 5 man instance and shit for epic LEWT or a set of items that you wanted really bad to look "awesome" :)lol )

I did a lot of exploring initially (vanilla wow era and then 40 man raiding/AV (alterac old schoolpvp) which was nuts and depressing after a while (<--molten core and BWL)) and then later on you focus on maximizing your best stats etc for dps, big ass pvp damage to get a kick out of you owning someone lol.. And or leveled other character classes to get a different feel of the game.

Blizzard did a lot of great things with WoW, I am sure that if you had stayed longer you would have kept playing even in an on and off basis.

There's just so much shit to do/collect/see/hear in WoW.. And that's the sort of content diversity that Knights will need to compete in the long run, along with IMO rare world items that are not obtainable via just raiding (if there is any in the game, I have really read much on it)

MMORPGS can be fucking amazing if done right, despite all the hate that WoW gets from some people in my honest opinion it is the first game of it's kind to create the level of addiction that it does the way it does it if given a fair chance. Oh yeah, knowing about lore characters and learning about it's universe helps out in the immersion and involvement with the game. That will also apply to Knights, so if you guys are interested in the game but don't know much about the "Star Wars" stuff go play some KOTOR 1/2 and shit. You'll end up loving it all.

I registered my account on the website October 22nd 2008...I thought I was signed up for the beta but apparently not. T_T

The mistake is assuming just because you registered that you get in.

A two-day beta smacks of a friends-and-family weekend to test out one zone.

Closed beta will probably start October or November. Just in time to ruin semester grades :D

No beta for me but I'm glad to see it's starting soon. Wonder how big this size of testers are for this round.

The rumor currently is 150-200 people chosen for this two day Beta. It may be a focused group test for the beta starting (the official announcement of game testing will likely be on Friday).

Yeah...I know :(

I always have the problem with mmo's where I follow them for awhile but don't really get excited until close to release.

I've been exciting about this ever since I first heard of it. I can't help but be hyped and I just want to play NOW! It's hard to contain myself.

I'm kind of excited for this...but I will not lie...not as excited as I could be.

You see, I was a Star Wars Galaxy vet. From day 1. One of the first Jedi on my server (Bloodfin) and still remember the sense of wonder and awe that came with that game. That was an adult MMO. No hand holding. No bullshit. You EARNED success in that game.

Too bad casuals want easy-jedi...

The things I would do for another Pre-CU SWG type game.

I got my Legendary Vibrolance a week before the CU hit, the game was never the same :(

Becoming a Jedi was brutally hard and didn't require skill but dumb luck. It took 6 months for the first Jedi to show up. even in SWG they made it easier with holocrons(and then made it a starting class with the game ruining update).

Also this is an age of Jedi and Sith. They haven't been purged like in the original series so why would it need to be so hard to become one?

Have you ever tried out old-school Ultima Online? There are still some private servers around that go back to the game's original era. The way I hear SWG vets talk about the old SWG is exactly how I feel about UO.

UO has zero turorials. No quests. Zero guidance. Just pure unadulterated fun and discovery.

Just watched the Gamescom and PAX footage.

Isn't it slightly disturbing that irrevocable progression-changing decisions will be made by OTHER player characters in your party? If I'm playing Light Side and the decision to murder everyone comes down to someone playing Dark Side (or just someone that wants to be a douche) that kinda sucks.

It almost seems weird that they even stress the irrevocable nature of the game/story progression, since the trend in WoW is to make more and more things changeable and revocable (talent re-specs, race, gender, and now even faction).

Planet Hutta does look crazy-good, though I'm not really confident that those sweet buildings in the back are actual in-game geometry.
Tell me about it. Couple that with the light/dark decisions having an effect on your character's personal skill progression and I think they just scared me away from pick-up-groups entirely.

Fuck that noise.

If you guys listened to the Darth Hater podcast you would have found out that during their hands-on time with the game that any choices not made by you would have no effect on your own light/dark side meter. PUGs are safe so no need to worry.

EDIT: I think I misread your statements but still good to those who were wondering if other users' choices impacted your standing.

Take off the rose colored glasses, pre-CU SWG was total garbage. The game was shipped broken with classes missing entire skill trees. There was literally nothing to do once you'd leveled up your skills. CU and NGE "ruined" a game that was already a total mess and hemorrhaging subscribers. They were progressively more radical and futile attempts to save their subscriber numbers.

Although I wouldn't like hand holding, I want it to be logical and straightforward.

As soon as I was dropped of into the main world of Anarchy Online, I was totally lost and didn't know what to do. So I spent months just walking around, doing nothing.

I tried half a dozen times to get into WoW like that, but never could. I think this game will do it for me though.

Pre CU was still better. The game had tons of problems, no doubt. The battlegrounds for example that launched with the game never worked and after months and failed patches they just removed them from the game completely... so many patches they implemented failed to fix things which was one of the saddest things I've seen from any MMO. No mounts or vehicles first couple months was also sad.

The game had a lot of great ideas and was sandbox in design just like UO, but too much was broke that they just never could fix.

The game was overly ambitious and complex that the devs themselves could not handle the game they made as they wrestled for years after with trying to make simple shit work.

Much of said content was stuff originally promised for at launch that didn't make it in the game till much later on. They failed at the most simplest of tasks as well. There was a pistoleer skill that didn't work for example that they "fixed" in about 8 different patches, yet nothing ever changed. The game was a massive mess and even when a patch did fix something, it broke countless other things somehow.

Lot of material eventually when the CU and NE came along just completely removed stuff from the game that they could never get to work right after years of work to simplify things.

Exciting to see that the game is getting to the point where closed game testing is starting up, a little less than year from launch so looks like things are on track. Bioware has been very secretive so far with TOR, which is always a worrying prospect if they are going to make it for launch.

I will certainly be playing day 1 though, can't wait!

I saw a picture of the actual invite e-mail that was sent out to the lucky groups. From reading the entire thing it looks like it's just for this specific event and not a full blown beta account. Meaning that once this event is over there may be a chance you aren't selected to be in the next one.

When Game Testing was first announced, BioWare mentioned that they would be doing the Beta testing in waves (my guess is that this is a preliminary version to the real version coming very soon, or it happens to be the first and shortest of the waves to come) - those people chosen for waves would be switched out for entirely new people UNLESS the people in previous waves were very good at reporting bugs and getting reports to BioWare.

Ah alright. I was under the impression it was standard beta testing procedure. If this gives people a better shot at landing in a group and actually makes people contribute to bug reports then its all good.

I signed up for the beta, but I will be fine if I don't get in. Lot of the stuff especially the story stuff I want to experience day 1 mostly complete and not in some unifinished state.

A fair and honest warning to the new guys

For those that don't know what you are in for... (As a ultra veteran WoW player that quit about 7 months ago and have quit like 3 times before that but I think it's for good now)

STAY AWAY FROM THIS GAME, you will get FUCKING ADDICTED.

If this will be your first MMORPG you do not know what you are getting yourself into.

Bioware is going to REALLY give Blizzard a run for it's money and then some.

I had forgotten that I had signed up for the beta back in "Account Created Date: 10/01/09" LOL... Oh Jesus hold me.
Exaggerate much?

People who say stuff like this have no self-control. The games aren't giving you a hit of heroin every time you do something good in the game.

This game won't threaten WoW anymore than any other MMO that's released, Age of Conan, Aion, and Star Trek Online, were all supposed to do this. Turns out, not so much.

Star wars has a massive fan base to tap into for a player base but to say that it will have success similar to WoW is hard to imagine. WoW has been quite dominant as #1 for a long time now, SWTOR would have to be quite good and be lucky as hell to match that success. Don't get me wrong however, I would love to see WoW toppled from it's skyscraper pedestal, and I hope for the best from SWTOR. Not just to slay that behemoth but to be an awesome gaming experience that I can enjoy for years to come.

The fact is, it's taken years for WoW to get as much content as it has and to be as balanced. It will be near impossible for a game to take it on at this point. The best you can hope for is a distant second.

Only Blizzard can topple Blizzard, unless there's a game out there that's been in development for seven years and complete reinvents the genre.

Lets not keep turning another mmo thread into a "topple WoW" argument. Even the devs don't expect such a thing and are aiming for a modest subber base in comparison to the 11.5 million of WoW

First, 11.5 is a bullshit number. ~5 million in NA and EU. Asia subs are inflated because they don't pay monthly subs, they buy time cards. People who haven't played in months ago are still counted. Blizz also makes a lot less per player in Asia, Chinese players pay $.06/hour to play.

Second, nothing will topple WoW, there is no need. Old age will get it eventually, and it's already begun. The game has peaked and subs have plateaued about 2 years ago and are slowly starting to decline. They can stave off losses with expansions only for so long. It's not about toppling WoW, it's about becoming the heir apparent, which they are definitely trying to position this game to become. They certainly seem to have the right combination of IP and design approach to make that happen.

This should be the goal for any upcoming MMO - not trying to topple WoW, but be WoW's eventual replacement.

WoW is growing stale and Blizzard knows this. WoW will topple itself in time and Blizzard will try to make the new MMO they are working on to become its successor. The problem is that it will literally be as hard for Blizzard to do that as any other developer unless Blizzard creates a WoW 2.

As for BioWare, I think they got realistic goals for TOR. As long as LucasArts and EA share the same subscriber goals then TOR should do just fine. It does look like TOR, at the moment, has the best chance to become WoW's successor because of the IP it is built on and the developer pedigree behind it. Only time will tell though.

Anyway, I'm waiting for the BioWare update today. It's been delayed (it's still supposed to come today) and I want to see if it's an official announcement of Game Testing starting. Hopefully that will clear things up as to whether or not Game Testing will be regular or if the two day test announcement to those select people was just a focused test group and the actual game testing hasn't started yet.

I'm a HUGE Star Wars fan and have been anticipating this game since it's announcement. It keeps looking better and better too. But I can't help but wish BioWare was working on a Mass Effect MMO instead. I really hope that in the distant future they do just that, because it seems like a missed opportunity if they don't.

But yeah...bring on TOR. Looks fucking sweet.

Multiplayer combat video looks hawt.

Anyone else worried that they sell this as multiplayer combat? It's a MMORPG?

Might be a hint that there is more single player than some people are anticipating. I just hope it's not a clausterphobic level like Age of Conan.

Combat looked so-so. Looked like fairly average Auto-Attack. Not really what I would consider "Heroric combat". But it might be what will make it more of a success than some of the experimental real-time combat MMOs like Blade and Soul and Tera.

i think its because most of the videos released so far are either with solo players or at most two. This shows a party of four and how the different classes go about their roles (tanking, dps, healing, off-healing, etc).

Not worried, but I did get a bit confused. I thought this is about a pvp scenario or something. :lol

Hard to tell anything from a video like this. Looks as basic as an MMO can get, which is ok in my book. Question is how fun the combat in the end is and you kinda need to play it to make a judgement on that.

I think it's confusing they call a PvE encounter 'multiplayer' when most people equate that to PvP combat (not saying it isn't multiplayer, it is, but you know what I mean).

Anyways, wasn't too impressed with the demo, but there is no doubt now that TOR is going to be WoW in space with voiceovers.

Bjergsen is the greatest midlane in the world
Looks like yet another crappy MMO, only now with cutscenes that only one person in the group wants to watch.

I am now officially disappointed. It looks like the old tank and spank routine in that video. I was hoping they planned on circumventing that by just introducing huge waves of minions to kill.

At this point you either need to accept that this a slightly improved WoW clone with a Star Wars skin or get out. Thinking anything else will only let you down.

If you want an alternative, go play SWG. Personally, I'm excited.

And I feel like this looks way more controlled than the chaotic WoW dungeons. Each class seems to have a more unique purpose in combat than just having a tank, healer, and a couple of dps standing around. The Jedi had to go off and fight the Lieutenant. And the healer was helping out with crowd control.
