Steam Machines and Steam Controllers shipping December 13th (US only)

In addition, a number of games that run natively on SteamOS are being added to each selected user’s library.
Wait, should I be reading that, games will work that aren't "native" SteamOS?

What if windows games run in an emulation mode, or VM? That'd be pretty sweet!

No, I think you're reading into it too much. It's just saying that those selected are going to get some free games to make sure you actually have something to play on SteamOS. Also, VM gaming fucking sucks. If you want to run Windows games, you'll need to install and dual-boot Windows or connect to a Windows computer on your network and stream (I think that's the way it works).

No I think they are just saying they are giving some free games to people who get a steambox..

I'm hoping a notification is sent out when the emails have all been sent out. I keep on refreshing my email every few minutes in the naive hope that I'm selected.

I wonder what specs the steam box will come with?

The 300 prototype units will ship with the following components:
GPU: some units with NVidia Titan, some GTX780, some GTX760, and some GTX660
CPU: some boxes with Intel i7-4770, some i5-4570, and some i3
RAM: 16GB DDR3-1600 (CPU), 3GB GDDR5 (GPU)
Storage: 1TB/8GB Hybrid SSHD
Power Supply: Internal 450w 80Plus Gold
Dimensions: approx. 12 x 12.4 x 2.9 in high

They're going to get some free Linux games, that's all. Like Metro: Last Light.

So, is there going to be an OT for the beta? I mean even if in the worst case scenario no Gaffer gets the hardware, SteamOS and streaming will be available for a wider range of people.

I think it would be good to have. We could collate the whole experience in one thread. Everyone can have a go with steam OS and the thread can list all the beta testers on GAF and then the external vids for the others that upload them. Although with the Steam Controller as well, it could be a bit of a cluster fuck

It just shows how much Valve really cares about the rest of the world.

I'm so glad you know their exact reasoning for not being able to get them to Europe. It's not like they themselves weren't disappointed that they couldn't get them there because it severely effects their overall data or anything.

Cut the shit dude. Stop taking this personally, it's a contest that none of us are going to win.

lol at the Steam group. People are mad as fuck.

I won't blame Valve for biting off more than it could chew with the amount of countries initially said to be eligible considering the Steam Machine is the company's first foray into hardware, but as I mentioned earlier this news is something that would have been obvious to Valve weeks if not months ago and so I don't think it's unreasonable to be peeved because you felt as though you were being strung along with a sense of false hope.

The OS will be available when the beta units ship, that is on the 13th. Not sure how final it's going to be though. Controller will launch next year together with the Steam Machines.

Sure, I also think they should have told us earlier. But 'boycotting', 'goverment spying' etc? lol

Nothing to do with internet, but local home connection.

Theres some details on the community page
http://steamcommunity.com/groups/homestream#announcements

Actually I have my suspicions that both will be available, with in-home streaming via your home's wireless connection being the lowest quality method, while miracast receivers could be used for a much more efficient, higher quality experience.

This is based on 3 different interviews and promotional videos from Intel where Gabe says they are a great target for steam / big picture along with iris pro intel chips

Valve definitely should have just said "USA only because freedom" right from the start judging by the people in this thread who don't understand things like customs restrictions, and safety certification for devices when most territories use different voltage standards. Sure they could ship you one, then when it blows up your house and sends out microwaves which start the zombie apocalypse it'll be your own damned fault.

I'm reading this thread when all of a sudden I get an email! I get excited and it turns out it wasn't for the beta. ;__;

There is still hope. Hope I tells ya!

Most power supplies are auto voltage switching or have a little switch on the back.

Do people get to keep these machines or do they have to return them?

from the agreement

3. If You are selected as a participant in the Beta Program, Valve will make the Beta Products available to You as part of the Beta Program. The Beta Products will remain the property of Valve, and We may require You to return the Beta Products to Us upon request at Our expense (for example, without limitation, if such return is required to comply with regulatory restrictions, or if we feel it would be useful for us to examine the Beta Products to confirm or reproduce defect or errors that You identify). For this reason, the Beta Products are not for resale.

I think what will make this announcement so painful is the fact that it's shipping this fucking week. If there were a large delay between announcement and shipping, it would help numb the inevitable pain of not winning.

I've lived in Australia, Europe and the US. I was just being silly about that bit. The point is, there are probably all manner of hoops they need to jump through in different territories to get permission to start sending these out, some related to safety and others to customs.

Yea, after they got my real name and address, suddenly EU is a no go.
Fuck Valve, will pirate all games from now on.

I just want to share how stupid I am.

I got an email from Steam, my heart skipped a beat. Opened it only to realize it was the receipt for the games I bought not two minutes ago.
