Steam Summer Sale 2015 thread of refunding everything you buy (June 11-21)

Guys, there are a bunch of games I'm on the edge on but just can't seem to pull the trigger on, either the discount isn't steep enough/base price is too high/not sure I'd like it/not sure I'd even play it/I'd rather play it on a the PS4. Amongst these games, arr there any that you'd STRONGLY recommend?

The Talos Principle
This War of Mine
The Evil Within
Wolfenstein: The New Order
Ori and the Blind Forest
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter
Ryse: Son of Rome
The Stanley Parable

Ori and the Blind Forest - Just yes, excellent game.

Talos Principle - if you like puzzle games this is right around portal 2 in quality.

Wolftenstein: TNO - One of the best singleplayer shooters I've played in quite awhile, I personally found some of the gore and violence a little over the top but it's still very good.

The Stanely Parable - I would say that be prepared for more of a thought experiment than an actual game but if you're okay with that it's a wonderful experience.

Talos, War Of Mine, Wolfenstein and Ori are all awesome tier. Stanley and Ethan Carter are also very good.
If I had to choose just one game of these I would probably pick Talos Principle.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.

Endless Legend feels like the subversive 4X game. I think it is really cool and does lots of very unique things.

Age of Wonders is also great.

Flip a coin, you can't go wrong either way.

I haven't played Endless Legend, but AoW3 is fantastic. One of the best fantasy 4x ever.

I can't comment on AoW3, but I bought Endless Legend* during the sale. EL is a good game, but it lacks a campaign and the combat is forgettable. It's very charming though and I've played through several sessions already.

*The expansion seems to have gotten bad reviews, so to save some money I skipped it.

re: AoW3 vs EL

They're both great :D

Get AoW3 if you enjoy tactical combat, get EL if you enjoy strategic empire management.

AoW3 has an almost insane variety of classes, races, spells, units, equipment, abilities, terrain, etc. It makes for tons of engaging tactical combat, and the combat AI is actually very solid!

EL meanwhile has a wonderfully unique fantasy world, lots of mechanically distinct factions, and some pretty smart TBS design. Combat is just ok, some basic tactical stuff. It still has all the problems endemic to TBS design as well though - marginal strategic AI, snowballing victory, etc, but if you don't care about that, it's fine.

So if you're more of a Civ fan, EL, but if XCOM and the like get you excited, go for AoW3. AoW3 does have strategic level empire stuff, it's just less fleshed out than EL since the focus is on combat.

Thanks for the suggestions and comments about both. Definitely a fan of XCOM style games, so I decided to go for AoW3 for now and I'll get EL next sale.

I purchased the game on Dec. 24th of last year, well after having compiled and posted my 2014 GOTY list. Talos took me 40 hours to finish and afterwards I went back and edited it into the #2 spot for the year.

It's that good.

I ended up buying it. I've decided that I have no regrets.

I'm thinking about getting Half-Life 2 while it's still on sale. The thing is that I have already completed Half-Life 2, and episodes 1 & 2, a few years back on the 360. While I'm not that interested in replaying Half-Life 2 storyline again on the PC, I am interested in playing with Half-Life 2 mods. So what I would like to know is, would the base game be sufficient for mods, or do some mods require episodes 1 & 2 to be played?

I've only played Fallout 3 DLC. I liked Broken Steel and Mothership Zeta but thought The Pitt was a bit crap.

I spent a ridiculous amount of money this sale and the best value by far has been One Finger Death Punch. I can't stop playing this. It's what i imagine a stick figure action game would be like if it were made by platinum.

Talos Principle is Portal 2 quality, you say? I loved that game. Guess I'll pick it up. Will probably pick up Ori as well. I love the art, and it sounds like there's a good focus on exploration.

Still a bit undecided on Wolfenstein. I really like the theme and action of it, but it's been so long since I played a shooter. And I can probably pick it up for $20 on the PS4 down the line.

I'll probably pass on Stanley Parable.

This War of Mine is one of the biggest purchase regrets I've made on Steam. If there's any game on your list I can strongly recommend against, it's that one.

Really? Can you elaborate? This War of Mine was probably the #1 game I wanted from that list.

In a giving mood and bought an extra copy of KOF 2002UM. I am the only person in my immmediate group of people who game on PC so I'll gift it to a fellow gaffer. This will be my first time gifting so anyone here interested PM me!

Just gonna throw this out there as some life advice, like "look both ways before you cross the street" or "wash your hands after handling raw meat," but never buy just a base game. You'll pay more picking up DLC than you would just buying the complete/ultimate/GOTY edition (even if you already have the base game), and DLC rarely gets as good of a discount (if any discount at all).

So it looks like this and Tales of Maj'Eyal are gonna be my only Steam purchases this sale:

With card money, that puts my spending under $10, about 20% what I usually spend each sale. Kind of disappointed at the dailies and flash sales this go around.

So im getting ready to build a new pc in a few weeks, and so far ive got Skyrim, Fallout 3+NV, Witchers 1-2-3, and chivalry. Anything else might be worth it? i know Pillars seems to be pretty good as well

Really? Can you elaborate? This War of Mine was probably the #1 game I wanted from that list.

What's wrong with it? It's probably the only game I'm interested in playing.

My impressions: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=147942299. The TL;DR is, this game turns the horrors of war on civilians into a crafting, god game. You do not play as a survivor, so that emotional bond is never direct; you are a puppeteer in their hell.

If you really want to try it, by all means do so, since you can get refunds now. But you may not get the sense of what I'm talking about within two hours.

Okay okay. But... To GoTY or not to GoTY, that is the question. Is the DLC good? Is it worthy of those extra 5 dollarinos?

The DLC is very much worth the extra 5 bucks. Extends the length by quite a bitm, and fleshes out a really good side story.
Oh, and michael madsen is in it I believe.

Based on the examples you've listed (RPGs, games where you can melee, games where choices have consequences), Kingdoms of Amalur. It's not in the encore sale, so maybe just wishlist it for a -75% sale because you've already got hundreds of hours of games.

The Evil Within season pass, yay or nay? I loved the base game.
So which of these 2 I'm interested in would you strongly recommend. Ori and the Blind Forest or Dishonored GOTY?
Dishonored is an amazing stealth game while Ori seems to be an amazing Metroidvania. Pick whichever genre you enjoy most.

Ori. Don't hesitate.

DO IT

JUST DO IT

Based on it, i would recommend:
Wolfenstein: The Old Blood
The Evil Within
DARK SOULS™ II: Scholar of the First Sin (If you haven't played the base game, even better)

Wait what the Lara Croft games are freaking 66% off now?! WTF Steam they were 50% off when they were flash before. Wonder if I can get a refund for Guardian of Light, cause I put 2+ hours into it, but this is BS.

Dishonored is back in the Encore?! Oh my god. I haven't bought a single game in the sale so far. I don't know whether to grab this or not. It seems expensive

I've never been so indecisive about a sale purchase before.

CONVINCE ME GAF. It is in your hands.

Oh, I don't know, I suppose it comes down on whether or not you want to play ONE OF THE BEST GAMES OF LAST GENERATION ???

In all seriousness, I do consider it one of the best. Excellent level design, complete objectives in many ways you seem fit and thus having a great replay value. Atmosphere and soundtrack are great as well, really enhances the experience of the already great visual design of Dunwall, solid voice acting, and last but not least, the gameplay. Oh man, I could talk hours about the gameplay but it's just that good, you have to experience it for yourself. Whether you play it like a good Samaritan ghost, a homicidal maniac, or something in between, you can play however you like. Get the GOTY edition while you're at it, I highly recommend the the Daud expansions. Knife of Dunwall and Brigmore Witches are one of the, of not THE, best add-ons I have ever played in any game, period.

And... have I sold you a copy?
