Stuck in the Past - a 33 RPM thread for vinyl listeners and collectors

So A guy at my work told me that his father was friends with a Juke-box repairman back in the 60'2-70's. He said that the repairman gave his dad 2 boxes of old 45's from that time period. Elvis, Beetles... stuff like that. They have the paper sleeves but no actual album cover. Any idea if there will be something of value in those boxes? Anything to keep an eye out for even with the actual cover (just record and white paper sleeve... all in great shape as they have only been played in a jukebox.)

Most likely the records themselves aren't in very good shape: jukeboxes are brutal to the records. There might be records of note of course, or they might all be just dollar singles. Jukebox singles rarely have covers, just white sleeves or period appropriate record covers, so that's an non-issue.

Check everything from Discogs and see if there's anything worth anything (and then just enjoy the singles regardless :))

Lol so I tried buying Blackstar clear version with a gift card. I wasn't sure it would work, but the transaction went through. Got a confirmation and everything. Then like a week later I get an order cancellation. Being too lazy to register the card until it was too late, I find that the clear version is sold out and for sale for 400 bucks on discogs.

I done fucked up.

Yeah there is no chance of getting that version of Blackstar now. Everywhere I checked yesterday was sold out. Even Amazon are sold out of black vinyl copies.

I ordered some interconnects and a Cambridge Audio 551P phono pre-amp yesterday. Set up my Kallax unit from Ikea last week and got my records unwrapped and stored. Getting my turntable at the end of the month. Cant wait :)

Apparently there will be a repress of blackstar in feb.

They will also be releasing the five years box set into individual releases in February too. I'm hoping the prices of Bowies catalogue will drop again once some time has passed... It used to be really affordable, anyway. I may get ziggy as that usually is expensive.

yeah, ordered mine off amazon last fall, just got the updated shipping estimate last week or so...it's the picturedisc though, feel free to vomit here

If I'm going with the U-Turn Orbit as my first turntable is there any reason to pass on getting their integrated phono amp? Is there a better solution that's as price effective that a vinyl neophyte will hear the difference with? Also, the Ortofon or one of the Grados for the cartridge?

FYE in Salem NH is closing down, and 50% of all new vinyl.

Got this for $199

Playing Rubber Soul now, sounds amazing.

If your receiver has a phono preamp then you won't need one built into the turntable. If it doesn't, then you'll either need to get the built-in preamp, or you'll need to buy an external one.

I like my Ortofons but I don't really know anything about the specific cartridge they're offering. No experience with Grado carts, sorry.

So recently, I received Blackstar by David Bowie the limited edition version, and his 5 Years box set is on the way.

I am super frustrated because I cannot seem to balance my record player.

I ordered it on the Friday it was released through the website. It was a Barnes and Noble exclusive in the US. I ordered it before his death.

Nice. Thought it might be a pre-passing order. Do you know if it was it available in-store?

I think I might get that 5 Years box. I have everything on it already, but none of it on vinyl. How are the remasters?

I have no idea with Blackstar. I need to reconfigure my record player before listening to it.

As for 5 years, I just recieved it yesterday. It is a beautiful package, but I have not had a chance to listen to it yet. The same thing, I need to rebalance my record player before listening to it.

Any alternatives to the Kallax for storage/equiptment placement? I wouldn't mind something like the Kallax in a 1x2 (vertical) next to an A/V stand...I currently am confined to a bedroom and will be for some time (grad school) so I can't scrap the bed or desk, and will need to figure out somewhere to store my TV/gaming crap. Just trying to figure out something that's not gonna take up loads of space.

While you're look at IKEA, check out the Nornäs and Valje lines. They offer (I'm pretty sure...) the same size cubes as the Kallax line but you have some more options in configuration. There's a really nice Nornäs use that's 1 x 3 wide but it's a bit overpriced since it's marketed as a bench.

EDIT: Nevermind on Valje. Depth on those is just shy of 12".

Yeah I'm looking at the Nornas. I like that 1x3 unit, might be able to fit some AV equipment in the middle part. It is pricey, though. The sideboard unit is something like $70 cheaper and significantly wider.

Do we know of any concerns on weight with the Nornas? I'm considering putting my 50" TV on it until I can get a mounting situation sorted out.

Speaking of storage solutions, if there's one thing I like to do online
besides porn
, it's look at random record collections. I know there's been some posted here in the past, but the great things with record collections is they're always growing, so please share the current status of your collection!

I'll start things off, this is my wife and I's collection, from a few weeks ago. If you drag the picture into a new tab you should be able to at least read the spines of anything in a gatefold.

It's three Kallax 1x4, since the wall wasn't wide enough for a 4x4. AT LP-120 turntable connected to a set of Audioengine A5+ speakers, to avoid needing an amp, since the wife doesn't want too much audio equipment clutter. Only problem is, for me at 6'3" the turntable is at a good height, but my wife needs to drag a step stool over to place the needle.

How did you find The Shining carpet omg

My storage setup is two black plastic milk crates, I'm sure you can imagine. :(

The rug was from Mondo/Middle of Beyond last year when they came out with a bunch of The Shining stuff. It looks like they sold out of the small rug though at MOB.

I actually only bought storage from Ikea recently and went with the Kallax shelving unit. Like Chinner said it's cheap, looks good, and fits records great.

Both of my Ikea cube shelves warped very noticeably after less than a year of holding records, so it always seems odd that it's such a standard recommendation.. Unless mine are just from a bad run or something.

I have Kallax stuff around the house as well. Got two 2×2 units above my TV storing my blu-rays and games. A 2×4 unit for DVD's, books and the few records I have. And one 4×4 unit with a bunch of random stuff. Got Linnmon tabletops attached to it, serves as my dining table and storage. Needless to say I'm a student living in a small ass apartment :p

I have my speakers/amplifier/turntable set-up all figured out. Now I just have to save some more and wait for I'm allowed to order. I want Dali Opticon speakers but as employee I can't order them yet. Too little stock at the moment sadly. By that time I'll post with some pics.

I ditched the Expedits because I hated how deep they are and how crappy they are for 7"'s

Now everything is on Lundia shelving which is pretty much perfect (and customizable!)

Expedits are pretty neat for bulk storage still. Got one 5x5 sitting in the storage but no room for it.

I need to tidy up and need another Expedit

And here's the linear tracking TT (Technics SL-7) which I really really like, and the amps and other sources.

Was too busy listening in awe yesterday to actually take some pictures. I've had these speakers for years and the current amp set up for about a year but I've only ever used it with my pc or an mp3 player. The sound quality increase with a proper audiophile source is nuts. Not only that, the difference between some modern records and older records is pretty big too. My wife's 1978 pressing of War of the Worlds just about blew my mind.

A few more here.

B&W and Rotel... hell that's nice.

Friend of mine threw away a complete Rotel setup with dual monoblocks. real shame.

No pictures (yet) because I'm lazy/my room is a pho king mess right now, but I picked up the Nornas bench at Ikea (three cubes wide, one cube tall). Misjudged the height of my TV stand behind it, so for now no legs on the system.

I also realized JUST how many records I had to sell a few years back. I am about 1 and 1/10 cubes filled. :(

Today I went to pick up some records at my old stompin' grounds when I was in community college. Got the following:

Dave Brubeck - Time Out (reissue)
Connie Francis - Second Hand Love and Other Hits
Billie Holiday - The Billie Holiday Story
Nisi Period - Soon The Love Balloon Will Pop (owner gave it to me for free!)

Went to get some record sleeves but they were out so I walked out with some sale records elsewhere:

Halshug - Boldets Band
VA - The Rough Guide to Mali Music

All for about $50. Not the best deals in the world, but still pretty decent haul.

Really nice set-up you got there Atrophis. Pro-ject recordplayer?

Yeah, Pro-ject Debut Carbon Esprit SB. Looks like a few of us have got one judging the other pictures on this page correctly.

Yes, its a nice combination. Your friend is a crazy person!

Nice gear. I have that same series Rotel amp.

I was after the RC 1070 pre-amp to match the power amp but couldn't find any on ebay at the time. I needed something quick to test my power amp so just went with a temporary cheaper model. Not sure if i'll bother upgrading now because it sounds just fine as it is.

Just need a CD player and some headphones and I'm done spending money on hifi stuff for a good while.
Time to buy all the records instead
.

Rotel RB 1050 amp
Rotel RC 1070 pre-amp
Rotel RCD 1072 cd player
Cambridge Audio 640p Azure phono pre-amp
Pro-ject Xpression III turntable
Paradigm Studio 60s speakers

what's the media center that you have? I'm in the market for a media center that can hold my game consoles and vinyl equipment.

Holy shit, I just scored a near mint unplayed 1990 copy of Dead Can Dance - Aion for 50 bucks. Can't believe I finally tracked that damn album down - not hard to find in Europe, but it's an absolute pain finding Dead Can Dance stuff in the US.

I now have...

Spleen and Ideal
Within the Realm of a Dying Sun
Aion
Spiritchaser
Anastasis

...completing a complete discography is looking more plausible now, after lucking into Anastasis being on the top shelf when I walked into my local store last week. I still need...

Dead Can Dance (debut album, easiest to find due to low demand)
The Serpent's Egg
Into the Labyrinth (I know a shop that has this so fingers crossed it doesn't go before then)
Toward the Within (the better of the two live albums - this one will be pricey)
Dead Can Dance Live (not a top priority, but it would be awesome)

Awesome! I love their early gothier stuff. Spleen and Ideal is my go to. I should revisit the later stuff to see if it sticks this time.

Same here! I'd classify Spleen and Ideal all the way through Aion as totally perfect albums, I love the medieval European influence. Their later stuff that branched out into broader world influences only recently clicked with me, but I'm starting to appreciate them almost as much as the gothy albums.

And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'
This was a list of 25 favorite vinyls David Bowie wrote for Vanity Fair a couple years ago. It's such a great read, along with showing a lot of wit, he's made me search for many of these that I've never even heard of:

link plsssssssssssssssss?

Edit:

oh have to be a member.

damn it I might buy a membership

They have a smaller tier of membership called "The Crate" or something along those lines for $6/mo that gives access to their member store and a handful of other things. That being said, I highly recommend becoming a full member. I have been for about 6 months now and am thoroughly impressed with the quality of the records, the customer service, and so much more.

If you decide you want to sign up shoot me (or someone else you want to help out) a message because they have a great referral program that would get us both some goodies.
