Stuck in the Past - a 33 RPM thread for vinyl listeners and collectors

urbanoutfitters.com has some crazy deals like the latest Deerhunter LP for 10 bucks and Donovan's Sunshine Superman on Sundazed Records for 5 bucks.

Do the brick and mortar stores have deals like this?

They have albums on clearance for $10 all the time. I've gotten Spoon's Transference, Hot Chip's One Life Stand, Yeasayer's Odd Blood, and Cymbals Eat Guitars' Why There Are Mountains.

A few weeks ago, they had No Age's new album for $10, right after I bought it for $20. That kind of sucked.

Went to a local record store and picked up the following:

Cat Power: Dark End of the Street
Basil Kirchin: Primitive London OST

I also picked up the vinyl re-issue of XTC's Skylarking, but the cover is NSFW, so you'll have to go see what it looks like yourself (hint: it's pube-tastic).

Uhhh, $30-50 is nothing for an OOP double vinyl.

I was surfing ebay the other day, all of the auctions for the OOP Classic Records Led Zeppelin reissues were starting north of $150 a piece. Physical Graffiti is probably worth $200+.

I've got period pressings of their whole discography. But on the audiophile heavy vinyl, I've only got Led Zeppelin, II, and IV. I paid $30 each retail.

I'd never sell them. But there is no way I'm dropping $150 each to finish the collection. I could kick myself now.

I know really rare stuff, like certain pre 1960 jazz records can go for thousands.

I have a Circa Survive OOP picture disc that can probably getch 100-150.

Any cart recommendations?

<$500. I'm using a clearaudio concept table with the stock arm.

my phono stage does MM/MC but i've only used MM carts, i hear that MC are only worth it at higher price levels, but i'm open to whatever.

How's your amplifier and speaker system? The amplifier affects the sound the most.

well my stylus is bent/broken, and it doesn't have a replaceable stylus and it was only a $200 cart so by the time it gets to germany or where ever to get it replaced so i might as well just buy a new one. so i need a cart regardless.

speakers are B&W 603 S3 through various amps. also a stax headphone setup.

This thread is wonderful :)

If my tax return isn't eaten up by necessary things, I'm going to splurge on some vinyl. Will post some images in a couple weeks if things pan out.

Dynavector 10X5 is a popular choice in that price range. It's a high output MC.

Denon DL-103 is another well reviewed, yet modestly priced MC. It's low output.

And Frank Van Alstine started selling his modified Grado prestige cartridges again. Supposed to be great bang for the buck, and they have a user replaceable stylus. http://www.avahifi.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=258&Itemid=247

Yes, a cheap MC is simply not worth the price.

My pick would be either the Ortofon 2M Black or Bronze. The Black may be a little over your budget but it's well worth it considering is shares the same diamond of the former Ortofon flagship Jubilee.

Do you have any thoughts on the AT 150MLX? I can get it for a song and my local guy recommend it to me when we were talking about the 2M Black.

I just discovered that Vivian Girls are playing a free show at my school in the podunks of western North Carolina. Words can't express how much of a raging erection I have right now. It spurned me to purchase I Can't Stay and My Love Will Follow Me 7"s and the Everything Goes Wrong LP. I had the album on CD, but couldn't resist anymore. I already have Wild Eyes 7" and Vivian Girls LP. The show is a week before their new album releases, but hopefully they'll have it on sale at the show. I'm so pumped.

AT are known for being on the bright side of neutral. So if his system is already trending that way, it's a consideration.

I imagine the dealer is offering a sweet deal because it's older stock. For some reason they have recently jacked the price up on that cartridge. It's nearly $500 at needle doctor and some other places, but I found a msg board post from a few years ago talking about them being available from J&R for $250 ! LP Gear still has some left in stock for $325.

Honestly AT would not be my first choice for an above entry level cartridge, that particular model is like the top of their range, they mostly crank out budget models. But it could be worthwhile if he's getting it cheap enough.

Synergy plays a big role in cartridge selection. He should ask a Clearaudio dealer what works well on that table. I'd think one of Clearaudio's own pieces might be a great fit.

I'm running an original Planar 3/elys with an old Creek OBH-8. I hope to upgrade my whole analog front end this year. One table I was looking at is the $1500 Marantz TT-1571 which is an upgraded Emotion. It seems like a crazy value since it comes with an $800 retail wood body Clearaudio MM cartridge. But lately I've been thinking that table might not be that large enough of a step up from where I am. I'd really like my next purchase to last a long time. The VPI Classic is getting rave reviews. Used they can be found for under $2000 on audiogon. I've read from several sources, it gives up very little to the megabuck decks. Have you auditioned one ? I like the simplicity of my Rega, but know I'm missing a lot. And I've read their high end tables like the P-7 and P-9 are simply outclassed in their price ranges. What table do you own ?

Should be getting my new NAD C356BEE today (selling the C326BEE when it gets back from repair if anyone's seriously interested), ordered an acrylic platter for my Debut III and the Pro-Ject Speed Box as well. Hellloooooo tax return!

Also got the album "Ice Cream Spiritual" by Ponytail today. I've had the digital version for a while, couldn't pass up at the price though. Hoping to head into town later and grab Mogwai's newest release, and any day now I should be getting the Vivian Girls records I posted about earlier, they were on backorder.

All in all, a good day for vinyl! :D

Can anyone find me a copy of Labi Siffre's "I Got The..." on vinyl? I'll take a 45, or a full length LP. I just want this song, and I'm willing to pay probably way too much for it...

I just ordered from Insound for the first time. The package was shipped out ten days ago and I still haven't received it. Shipping from New York to Salt Lake City shouldn't take this long. I'm starting to get a little worried about it. :[

Picked up:

Simon and Garfunkel - Wednesday Morning 3 A.M.
Mogwai - Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will
Richard Pryor - L.A. Jail

Kinda pricy for the three, but pretty good pickup. Simon and Garfunkel record was in terrible shape and overpriced. Probably won't go back to that store, but I like what I grabbed overall.

In sound screwed me over on the Memory Tapes LP. Never ordered from them again. :|

In other news, I finally bucked up and bought DFA1979s LP for 42.50.

How'd they screw you? I wish I'd asked about Insound before I ordered from them. All I've gotten has been negative feedback. :[

Preordered it way before it was due to ship, get a message about them not having enough copies a week after it was due to ship when I asked them about it. Luckily I got it through another store when it was repressed.

I'm very familiar with the Clearaudio Emotion and I can't say I'm a fan. I've never liked all-acrylic turntables as I find overt usage of the material deadens the sound leaving a very antiseptic, detached sound. The sound is very clean and detailed but lifeless.

I would try to get a Thorens TD-800. I have the TD-850 model and it's a world beater.

MOGGWWAIII!!! White Noise is still my favorite track of the year thus far.

I'm curious, is it you or Weggles (i think that's his name) that has the Debut III? I'm thinking about a preamp upgrade, was curious what's out there.

When would be a good time to sell my 1st print UK Beatles albums? I figure I should wait until they're 50 years old, it's only a few more years to go.

I've noticed that LPs are going down in price lately. Vinyl collectors seem to be fading fast.

I have a crap load of LPs from the 70s and 80s from Japan, but I don't have the damn "obi" on them so they aren't worth squat.

Awesome, another Mogwai fan! I think you'll appreciate what I got in the mail today...

I'm pretty sure it was Weggles that had the Debut III. I think I'm going to pick one up soon though.

1. TORO Y MOI OMGOMGOGMGOGMOMGOM!!!!

2. I just received something from Amazon this past Friday, it was in a decent sized box with bubble wrap, so I'm not sure they've entirely changed their shipping process.

Amazon is quickly becoming my favorite online retailer for vinyl. I like to purchase in store, but the stores around me aren't anything special.

I've been buying vinyl off of Amazon for 5 or 6 months now and haven't been disappointed yet. That said, I would like to find some other places to shop around and compare prices. Can you guys suggest some sites to peruse? thanks. :)
