Stuck in the Past - a 33 RPM thread for vinyl listeners and collectors

mattiewheels

And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'
I've been considering this since I can never find clean copies of Tonight's the Night and On the Beach, but it's so expensive for just 4 albums.
When you add it up, he's always charged $40 MSRP for vinyl so its not unusual I guess, but yeah, I waited for the set to go under $100 like most people probably are doing, worth every penny that way.

Slowly starting my collection, but loving the journey. I don't really want to debate the quality of sound, but I just like the effort you need to put into it, I feel like I listen to it properly as opposed to flicking through spotify.

Awesome collection you got so far. Do you know how old the Dark Side of the Moon pressing is?

Not near it at the moment, but according to the sales listening it's a original 1973 French pressing? Not sure if there's a difference in the pressing, but it doesn't bother me as it's still in English.

People looking for metal records should make a trip to Portland. Music Millennium and Mississippi Records have some of the best stocked metal sections I've seen for non-specialist stores.

I'm randomly in Portland today and scored a good lot at 2nd Avenue Records. Loooots of metal on vinyl, loooots of fucking cool metal shirts. I've been to Music Millenium last year and picked up a few things, but didn't see much metal vinyl. Great store though.

Huh, I've never been to 2nd Ave. I'll have to check that out!

The other Portland (the one in Maine) is also really good for records. There are at least five different shops all within a mile of each other.

Here's what I picked up from 2nd Avenue Records in Portland:

Godflesh - Slavestate (first pressing)
War Master - Blood Dawn
Speedwolf - Ride With Death
Revenge - Attack.Blood.Revenge/Superion.Command.Destroy
Revenge - Victory.Intolerance.Mastery
Candlemass - Tales of Creation
Bathory - Hammerheart
Burzum - Hvis lyset tar oss
Y2Pxy3c.jpg

The Revenge gatefold is packaged really nice. Denim cover, gatefold, and booklet/artwork.

And of course with J. Read on the first page.

very nice haul all around. I would be astounded if I caught all of that at a brick and mortar. The Attack.Blood.Revenge comp was a nice surprise and long overdue. Crazy lo-fi Von cover. The new issues of Victory.Intolerance.Mastery might be the only Revenge I'm missing, but I do have two copies of the original Osmose LP lol.

I've been meaning to get started collecting Bathory and Burzum wax but I'm wary of the modern Black Mark releases and the only Burzum available is Back on Black, which by most accounts are hit and miss for both sound and presentation. Let me know how you like that particular HLTO release.

I have some of the black mark Bathory reissues (bathory/Under the sign of the black mark/blood fire death/twilight of the gods). All sound pretty good to me...digital but most likely high res masters. No original presses to compare to though unfortunately.

As for "back on black" I also avoid them due to some piss poor pressings I bought which had "gaps" between tracks where there is no gap in the original album (i.e continue flow from track to track). Apparently they have improved though?

Also sort of related but the "back TO black" label are supposedly pretty good re-releases. For a long time i thought they were the same thing as "back ON black" so had avoided them...

good to hear regarding the Bathory reissues. I've been holding out for finding the Under One Flag pressings but I may get some of the new Black Mark stuff if I can't find them for a good price. The main concern I have is with the self-titled. I've read the sound is drastically different between old and new.

for Back on Black stuff, I've had copies of De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas and Darkness Descends. The latter had a really blurry cover. Soundwise, pretty whatever. Can't remember too well since it's been a couple years since I had them. I really, really wanted to get their Judas Priest reissues but again I read the sound was not good. It's unfortunate that no one else seems to be interested in doing these albums. One label I definitely will recommend for reissues is High Roller Records in Germany. Everything they do is outstanding and they are pretty active.

I don't have a problem with the Black on Black release of Burzum - Hvis lyset tar oss. One thing I noticed right off the bat is that Varg's vocals are mixed more forward. Although I can only compare this to the 95 cd release since the originals are impossible to find.

I can listen to Det Som En Gang Var forever on repeat on any format or pressing though <3

First buys in a while. Saw the Tor Lundvall and knew I had to have it... and then what, I'm just supposed to stop flipping through the bins?!

Listening to this Michael William Gilbert right now and, man, is it good. 1980 release, has a real strong #ethnovibez thing going on even though it's just two or three white dudes playing. Synth, sax, percussion, and one track has a list of objects used that's about a mile long (including but not limited to: a gong, pot covers, a ratchet, a zither, temple blocks, sloshing water).

This is such a fun album.

I was pretty amused today when I opened my Jamie xx triple LP to discover it also came with... a CD, rather than a download code. Wonder why they opted for that route.

Brothers by Black Keys also came with a CD back in 2010. It's the only album I have that did that instead of a download code.

I'm porting my photo library over to an external drive/I'm too lazy to take pictures, but here's my first month's (well, three weeks) haul after a several-year hiatus:

• Malcolm McClaren - Madam Butterfly 12" single
• Bow Wow Wow - When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going
• Makthaversken - Witness 7"
• Vangelis - Blade Runner OST
• The Melvins - Live at Third Man Records
• Slowdive - Bue Day
• William Basinksi - Melancholia
• Arthur Russell - World of Echo
• Waxahatchee - Ivy Tripp
• Polaris - Music from the Adventures of Pete and Pete

Picked up Deafheaven's "Sunbather" today as well. Also grabbed the Danny Elfman/Batman/Mondo single, but mostly to flip (I'm broke, I never scalp, hush) to fund the Deafheaven purchase. Newbury Comics has 25% off all vinyl through the weekend, so I might pick up one more album, but I'm gonna need to take a couple-week break before I go broke!

Wait, wait, wait...what?! Whereabouts do you live? I'm in Lowell area, used to live right next to Littleton. Didn't think there'd actually be anything of worth in that little town (....), but looks like I might have to make the short drive down.

I already had a copy of Stardust that I picked up for $2 that was missing the cover. This one which is mint including the cover and not a reissue was $18. Don't mind overpaying for something i really want in that condition.

The funny thing is the people in the store had never heard it so I put it on the record player in the store while I carried on looking through the records. There was probably dancing involved

Does that version of Chime have the JZJ remixes and/or the 12 minute version of Deeper?

There's a extended mix of Chime (12 min and typed as Crime on the label) and Open Mind.

It's a US promo copy, catalogue ID 350-001 1

http://www.discogs.com/Orbital-Chime/release/1013154

Edit: yes ngower, Littleton MA has something in it worth visiting! I used to live in Westford and am now in New Hampshire. Vinyl Vault has been open for a year

Oh I'm aware of its existence, I just wouldn't have guessed it actually has anything of value. Are the prices decent? I usually go to RRRecords in Lowell or one of the Bull Moose/Newbury shops.

P.S. Nashua here. 6-0-3 represent.

Just outside Nashua but the wrong side of the Merrimack River. It's a pain to get anywhere from here.. I do like NH thou

I found the prices in Vinyl Vault comparable with discogs and eBay - that's probably how they set them. You are not going to find an insane bargain, but if they've got the record you must have, the price will be fair.

I assume you know of Mystery Train Records in Gloucester? Totally ace and across the street from a micro brewery so I can combine two of my favourite things.

Will check out RR records next time in Lowell. Bull moose used vinyl was awful when I last checked in Salem. They used to run a consignment system and they weren't responsible for the insanely high prices but the person who rent the shelf space from them did.

First I'm hearing of it. Conveniently, I'm working out in Salem, MA this summer so I'll have to make a trip out there after work one of these days. There's a shop in Salem, MA as well that has a solid reputation on the interwebz. I plan on hitting up the Northshore Mall's Newbury today to see if there's anything good while the sale's still going on. Nashua/Manchester don't have much usually and prices aren't all that great to begin with.

[EDIT] Bull Moose in Salem, NH does indeed have an awful used section, but they had some just-hard-enough-to-find gems (a few Arthur Russell records, Basinski, some of the world psych compilations). My only complaint about them is that they tend to cram as many records into their bins as possible, which results in some noticeable surface noise on their records. I've been to the Bull Moose in Portsmouth which has an enormous selection, hoping to hit them up now that I actually have a turntable again.

If you're in Lowell you might wanna scope out Vinyl Destination as well. It's right up the street from RRR in Mill No. 5, which has a bunch of neat little shops. There's nothing too crazy there, and prices aren't amazing, but there's still some neat finds. RRR is legit, though. Dude's absolutely crazy and his selection's nice. Prices are fantastic. I think he has weird hours though so it might be worth calling ahead.

Will get a photo tomorrow but

Sun Ra And His Intergalactic Myth Science Solar Arkestra* - Sleeping Beauty
John Coltrane - The Art Of John Coltrane / The Atlantic Years
Raime - Quarter Turns Over A Living Line
Prince - Sign "O" The Times
Prince - Lovesexy
Prince - Controversy
David Bowie - Tonight
David Bowie - Let's Dance
David Bowie- Hunky Dory
Chic - C'est Chic
Mutamassik - Symbols Follow
Fela* - The Best Off The Black President

Few dance bits but ill be damned if im digging out al the names for them tho

if there isn't a black version of a release I will take clear over any other color, easy.

at the moment I'm just managing my collection in my head lol. I haven't even started with my collection on Discogs yet. I don't believe I've made a double purchase for vinyl that wasn't intentional.
